I wrote the first linux hwmon driver for a composite USB HID device. I tried to justify why it had to not return errors on the other HID interfaces (because they would then not probe the generic HID driver). The hwmon subsystem maintainer only had a misinformed, dismissive rant as a reply. I am not contributing to this subsystem!

@soller I've been working in IT for over 30 years, I would say a few things, please keep in mind that IT people are not the best at communicating in the best of cases, add the fact that English is not their mother-tongue plus a sprinkle of cultural differences, and you can get easy upsets. I'm the manager of international team and I see it all the time. Please give people a chance before jumping to conclusions πŸ™

Last Wednesday evening @nova had a climbing accident and died.

All of us that loved her are heart broken and stunned. She was an amazing person that lived out loud and built connection and community wherever she went. She will be horribly missed.

@PINE64 As much as I'd like to see it, sound quality is more important to me than the smarts. Maybe I'm just not the right audiences

This week on @linuxmatters we discuss how we backup our systems. @wimpy @marxjohnson and myself talk about rsnapshot, borg backup and rclone. I changed how I do backups immediately after we recorded the show! :D

@wimpy @linuxmatters @popey @marxjohnson too bad, I'm looking at the subject right now and would have loved another perspective

Can anyone recommend a Windows app that can track per-application network usage over time? Trying to figure out what's uploading multiple GB per day without my knowledge.

Microsoft Power Automate was uploading about ~1GB a day (not even logged in), but there's 2GB more unaccounted for.

@WizardCM I heard of Safing Portmaster in a YouTube video, looked exactly like what you need but I haven't tried it yet myself

MIT research study shows ChatGPT helped good writers get done 40% faster and weaker writers to produce high quality output.

That ChatGPT is a productivity booster is indisputable. The question is whether it leads to fewer jobs as companies need fewer people or whether it leads to more opportunities in those fields?

Will ChatGPT do for writing what Excel did for accountants (good) or what Google Translate did to translators (bad)?

https://www.technologyreview.com/2023/07/13/1076199/chatgpt-can-turn-bad-writers-into-better-ones/

fmo,
@fmo@hachyderm.io avatar

@carnage4life I just wish it didn't invent stuff so confidently... I used it recently and it actually invented places that didn't exist! Also, not sure about the comparison to Google translate, I stopped using it because the translations are so bad. Maybe chatGPT is good for English based content but it drops very quickly in other less represented languages.

Today I discovered https://lemmy.world/.
I'm guessing it's like a Fediverse Reddit.

Is it good? Do you use it?

fmo,

@lcfd it's a good start, I'm definitely not using Reddit anymore

fmo,
@fmo@hachyderm.io avatar

@lcfd I wasn't a huge user to start with, but it can only gain more content with more contributing users. I'm not going to lie, it can be rough at times but I'm certainly not going to contribute to toxic companies that have no respect for their users.

Is there an OSS microblogging service I can host? It’s either that or Tumblr, which honestly I should just use that. But, relying on a service to do the right thing isn’t going to happen. At the moment I’m trying to maintain 8 social media accounts with all the Twitter alts. One place for everything to be found.

Sometimes an artist creates a work of art so compelling that we give them infinite shots on goal to come up with something even half as good.

This is the only explanation for Kevin Smith’s career post-Clerks.

@carnage4life certainly lots of duds but I think Dogma is a masterpiece and better than Clerks, I guess tastes vary ;)

fmo,
@fmo@hachyderm.io avatar

@SwiftOnSecurity have you tried to get the artwork from museums online? They provide high quality images you can download then you just have yo get print outs.
The Met museum has some for example.

Got a temporary work laptop a few months ago and immediately put #nixos on it. Forgiveness instead of permission and all that. Well now they sent me a full time replacement with explicit instructions to keep windows on it and I'm in hell.

#wsl ?

fmo,
@fmo@hachyderm.io avatar

@grandfunk if you're running Win10 Pro, just use the built-in HyperV to run a VM and don't use the Windows side at all. My company is going to do the same for me and that's exactly what I'm planning to do, I have no patience to run Windows...
