Here's a demo of LineageOS 20 - Android 13 running on Hisense A9, using the latest Eink Center app which can now be updated without reflashing the system image!

@denzilferreira @linmob I'll test it when I get a chance, thank you :)

Also as a small update: I've discovered that the headphone jack doesn't work, nor did an external USB-C DAC when I tried it.

@denzilferreira recently released LineageOS for the Hisense A9, an eink smartphone! This could be the coolest DeGoogled Android device out there now. Let's hope that the work put into this device can also be applied to other eink Android devices.

@denzilferreira Hi, thanks for the replay and great work ^ ^

There are two things I'd like to report though: the first is that the eink center doesn't seem to go past the welcome screen even though I've enabled it in accessibility settings. The other thing is that the device keeps complaining that it's not Google Play certified, to be honest I'd rather have a build with no GApps at all if that's something you're planning on

LinuxLounge,
@LinuxLounge@fosstodon.org avatar

@denzilferreira Also for some odd reason location doesn't work with or without gapps. I'm not sure what would be causing that

LinuxLounge,
@LinuxLounge@fosstodon.org avatar

@denzilferreira Hi, I did try that treble setting and it didn't seem to work, however I have the gaps uninstalled now (I think?) so I can't really test. As for location, I think it's probably just a bit more finicky than on stock because it seems to work now more or less :)

The Anki flatpak for aarch64 doesn't work, Fedora doesn't package Anki and I can't get it to compile for aarch64, aaaaaaaaaaaa

I saw a UK news outlet claim that the Steam Deck OLED is a "kick in the teeth" to those who bought the OG, it's really not. The OG Steam Deck still works fine and isn't that much worse than the OLED.

Why are Windows users so stupid, why do I get people in my comments telling me how great Windows 7 still is in 2023. There is literally no rational argument to be running Windows 7, feel free to make one, but hot take, I will never encourage people to run an EOL operating system

LinuxLounge,
@LinuxLounge@fosstodon.org avatar

@BrodieOnLinux I can totally understand why people do it, Windows 7 is far less bloated than everything that came after it, and people hate change. But it's also a terrible security risk to run an EOL operating system. Just use Linux with XFCE or something.

LinuxLounge,
@LinuxLounge@fosstodon.org avatar

@BrodieOnLinux honestly I get the feeling that the kinds of people who do this already know why it's a bad idea and don't care

I really want to try Localsend but as far as I can tell there’s no way to run it on an ARM Linux device, that’s such a bummer

    The fact that the advertising industry has conducted studies into how to reach people who actively resist advertising should be seen as what it is: a violation of consent

    Trying to get Display Link working with @AsahiLinux is proving to be something of a nightmare. I couldn't get the drivers to install at all on Debian, I suspect some issue with the kernel. I could get them to install and work on Ubuntu but it made my main monitor lag like crazy. I suppose there will be some merit to trying Fedora and Arch too, so I'll try that soon.

    > Messenger is a popular service so there’s presumably a not-insignificant amount of people that used the SMS/MMS integration to just have one messaging app. However, it’s likely not a core aim for the company anymore, especially with WhatsApp being the other big service it maintains. The deprecation is ultimately a win for Google and its continued RCS efforts.

    Tobias Bernard just announced a massive addition to GNOME at GUADEC, native tiling. KDE does it, COSMIC will have it, everyone is finally accepting this is the correct way to use a computer
