i love David Lynch's #Dune movie, but there is a minor detail that really cracks me up.

when the guild navigator is leaving the initial visit with the emperor, their giant container thingie leaves a massive puddle of liquid waste behind it.

the other guild attendants give a completely half-hearted attempt at mopping up after the navigator.

not sure if Lynch intended it, but the disdain shown by the moppers totally captures the guild's attitude towards the entire galaxy.

Honest question for white people that don't consider themselves racist:

White nationalists have been vocal about their attacks on DEI. These are literally the same people that talk about Charlottesville, Jan 6th, and ethnic cleansing.

They've laid out exactly how they plan to destroy DEI.

  1. Make false claims that DEI is about giving unqualified Black people an unfair advantage

  2. Work with racist politicians to use this as a pretext to make all DEI programs illegal.

1/n

@mekkaokereke i've been fairly disgusted by the U.S. national media coverage of the Baltimore mayor after the Key bridge collapse. i can't see those attacks on DEI as anything other than racist dog whistles.

i like to think i'm lucky enough to work at an employer that stresses DEI in our business practices, but also through our community practices fostering open source software.

i haven't said those specific words about DEI to my peers, but i have voiced my disgust in a few venues.

    reading more about this wild xz hack, it sounds so complex given the number of system level dependencies that exist. kudos to the people who have found it and are working to protect the community.

    something that seems fascinating about this, although i'm not sure about the accuracy yet, is the paper trail of communications the maintainer has left. it seems like they have been communicating with all sorts of linux distro maintainers about inclusion of the new versions.

    i still believe in the open source way for building software, it is certainly "working as intended" in this instance, but the nature of human conflict just saddens me sometimes. c'est la vie

    elmiko,
    @elmiko@fosstodon.org avatar

    something else that occurs to me. these exploits that happen in foundational open source components provide an inflection point to review our processes.

    imo, this type of incident is a call for us to have more human involvement in our software development. in the role of reviewing what is released and also in the role of holding projects accountable to open governance and values.

    this may have been a special case of the maintainer merging their own code, but maybe the process could be better?

    @deshipu imo, there is a distinct lack of "FOSS 201" type content out there.

    as you mention, lots of how to get started, what i might call "FOSS 101", but not the followup parts.

    fwiw, i proposed a 201 style talk for devconf about how to make larger changes to projects. i think what you are proposing also sounds like good material to help folks.

    i absolutely love for whipping up quick automation. i'm doing some cleaning of movie files locally and in about 30 minutes i have an app that encodes my ffmpeg commands with nice cli flags and even doctests XD

    is there a shell that incorporates python as the shell language?

    @vwbusguy i do run silverblue on some laptops, but on my main desktop i don't like to use it because i've had issues doing the type of container development i like.

    i've gotten wrapped around the axle with nested toolboxes and getting kind to work properly there, it's just simpler for me to run fedora workstation.

    elmiko,
    @elmiko@fosstodon.org avatar

    @vwbusguy 💯

    one thing i really love about silverblue, and the like, is that once i get my /addition/ layer all smoothed out, it feels like rebasing my operating system when i upgrade, and i do kinda like that feel.

    does feel weird to think about squashing my rpm commits XD

    i'm guessing this will just getting better and better, and i'm here for it =)

    elmiko,
    @elmiko@fosstodon.org avatar

    @TheSteve0 @vwbusguy makes sense to me, i think where containers have really helped me the most is when i need to maintain several versions of a tool. then using the containers to isolate the various environments feels really good.

    but, when i am able to standardize on a toolchain, then the containers don't matter to me as much, except when it comes time to share my work.

    : isn't "opening " with the release of their PDS (Personal Data Server) [1]. They are pushing storage costs and traffic to users. That's all. You still need the proprietary, centralised relay to move content from/to users.

    do we know if the local store will be in some user-readable format?
