Small structured experiments designed the right way force organizations to do something very radical: pre-commit to the evidence that we agree would force a change.

@faassen @grimalkina Isn't one of the "tenets" of OKRs that you purposefully overshoot what you think you can accomplish? They don't seem very amenable to starting small.

was stoked to get a hard copy of the 2023 DORA report at devopsdays seattle and to discover that "Documentation is Foundational" has a whole section ❤️

often I have been the sole documentarian on a team, and while I know in my bones the value of good docs...its even better to complement it with scientific backing

"When people are treated unfairly, for example, when they are not allowed to have input into decisions that will affect them, or when they are not given good explanations of why certain decisions were made, the symbolic message may be that the organization does not think highly enough of them (to provide input or to be given good explanations)."

@grimalkina Extremely relevant, thank you!

A concerned manager pointed me to a potential unilateral decision on incident management software about to happen and I am trying to strategize how to intervene on behalf of <<< waves to team not being included on this decision >>>

Open to suggestions. I am still in a quandary.

    Feeling nostalgic for some reason.

    George Harrison is my favorite Beetle, hands down. Ringo Starr comes next. The other two can fight over 3rd.

    Anyway, there's a lot I love about this. I didn't end up a huge Prince fan (there's a story there, because I was, but then it got learnt outta me, boy), but I have never seen him shred like this.

    And it's not virtuosic guitar playing either. It's just fucking great music. And he literally drops the mic and walks off the stage at the end.

    This morning I did the farmers market and put on Laurie Anderson's Home of the Brave, which is inspiring me to do a vocal project.

    Gravity's Rainbow is a song that I never understood but it drove me to read the book. In which overwhelmingly sharp coincidences occur. I won't spoil it, but that's the important point to remember.

    I actually listened to the song on the way to and back. It features Peter Gabriel and is one of my favorites on the album. The other duet they do also appears on one if his albums.

    Once I am home, I unload and walk to an estate sale that is closeby. NASA collectibles drew my interest.

    And then I found this.

    I enjoy seeing the Slack workaround of people changing their handle to indicate when they are OOO. Even though Slack has first-class support for indicating status, people still find the handle rename a useful way to transmit this info.

    dtauvdiodr,
    @dtauvdiodr@c.im avatar

    @norootcause @grimalkina I started to give Slack the benefit of the doubt here but the more I think about it the more it just seems silly. IRC handles FTW.

    I personally pay close attention to away status and status icons in Slack. And I make sure to let others know that I do, as well as let them know how I respond to Slack messages.

    I think a problem here is in the way people communicate in an ambiguous situation. Slack could do a lot better with helping people share their working expectations like I do. I have been in too many different companies over the past six years and "how we use chat" is NEVER an onboarding item.

    NEVER.

    I used to slam the button game. I had a huge olive military jacket/shirt - IYKYK - plastered in buttons. I was that one weirdo in high school with the military button jacket.

    A close friend from then, who I still talk to now (she's a writer in LA), wrote a character into one of her high school detective novels that wore the same olive green jacket.

    I asked her about that, if that was my jacket. She said she was inspired by all kinds of things we experienced in HS, wink wink. 😎

    Jillian Cade, by Jen Klein, if you're curious. It is good YA stuff! I loved it, and not just because of the appearance of my jacket.

    @Di4na Kill It With Fire is so good. I'm not even through the first chapter.

    I was thinking this. 15 years ago as we were pushing things into fat clients to keep our servers happy and we began putting stuff into clouds with increasingly thinner clients... I remember thinking, wtf this is cycling back to when I used VAX for my first email at Virginia Tech in 1990. All these CLI tools that nobody gave a shit about back when I was learning BSD and Solaris are now all the rage cornerstones of modern container computing.

    Thanks for the rec. Love it.

    @norootcause I love re-reading this because it reminds me how brittle communication is.

    But even moreso, it reminds me that my intellectual mind is nerd language. So often (several times per day!) I need to be disengaged from the logistical details, so I can appreciate the uniqueness of a hotdog.

    dtauvdiodr,

    @jepyang it... gets... so... much... BETTER. you don't think it can possibly get better AND THEN IT DOES.

    These books sold me on Hugh Howey. My OCD gets mainlined with good authors and he's no exception, I've read nearly everything he's written. And keep finding more and I know I have to catch up now, too.

    These books aren't known to me as Silo, I think of them as Wool, Wool II (Shift), and Wool III (Dust). :) So when I see I have to translate that to

    Immediately after I finished this trilogy I devoured the Sand series, plus fanfic. Then I chomped through all his space stuff, which is some of his BEST stuff. Not Wool-level mindblowing (imho), but still ... his universe building is like watercolor paints. Half Way Home is spectacular.

    And guess what? There's another show. Beacon 23, that's the same author. I don't know if it's as good, but I wanna see it. The books are also fantastic.

    I asked a coworker for a meet and greet meeting, which was going great until I said thanks for your time today loved our chat... "oh one other thing"

    At which point I learn that the reason I've been feeling cold responses and that I can't seem to mesh with the team, is because I'm not liked.

    It's related to me speaking up about broken things. And I acknowledge that I have a problem with speaking my mind directly. But apparently my facial expressions are not liked. I am being seen as someone who waltzed in and wants to make a bunch of changes.

    But ... I haven't been. So I also learn the impression is due to some existing extreme internal unrest which I am probably aggravating when I ask direct questions and make radical suggestions.

    In no place have I come in and said CHANGE THIS. I have been making observations, but my questioning and facial expressions are being taken as condescending. The person I talked with couldn't express what he wanted to say because it was going to be too harsh. So he said, just be cool.

    Just be cool. I don't know about what. So I think I am going to stop trying to give any input. I might turn off my camera for meetings for a while.

    @poiseunderchaos @AskPippa I have been working overtime to position things passively like this and make sure I frame things as opinions that only I have so it's OK, I think different, came from a different way of doing this, etc. But there is some wording or language and facial expressions (!!!) that are being misinterpreted.

    And yes, by and large, I am having awesome progress meeting with other people. And it's a naturally confusing place, as are a lot of software shops.

    There's an internal tension here... it is complicated, involves History, and I may never fully understand it. But there's visible fallout. Deeper and older wounds. My sparse opinions are a pittance.

    dtauvdiodr,
    @dtauvdiodr@c.im avatar

    @poiseunderchaos @AskPippa This is where I sit a lot of the time, in a place where I am making myself vulnerable, being as humble as possible but attempting to lead with curiosity.
