The "tragedy of the commons" is complex as it's a real thing inside capitalism, and we do all live inside capitalism, so it's a real thing. For it not to be a real thing, you will need to change the human world to live in a different economic system to capitalism - this is a challenge.

So functionally, it is a real thing that we encounter in most alternatives. Best to keep this in mind when building alternatives

etc :)

dragonfly,

@Hamishcampbell hey there again!
i'm still working on rebooting the Portuguese indymedia. can we get in touch?
i'd like to understand where the project is at the moment!

because of an open letter signed by 50 imprisioned women that was sent to us today by a family member for sharing...

i want to reflect further on how hard is to get messages trough

they wrote it by hand, then sent it to a contact i assume by letter, the i got an instagram message and got the pdf after and transcribed it. the news will be out soon, but i want to reflect on something else related to this

bc i want people to post their own content online in a way, i think people should be able to tell stories how they want to

i was thinking on what the best app may be overall and...

is really ok for posting content
but it doesnt allow for uploads :(((( at least, on mobile... but it has rss! and broader size limits than any fediverse instances i know about...

my thing is, why is it so hard to publish multimedia content online?

i know servers cost a lot, and thats why mastodon is so restricted with this.

but why cant we just post any kind of content? like sound, text, pdf archives, video, links and fotos is the basic. most social media allowo only one at a time. its so fristrating. especially trying to do grassroots journalism with activists. its impossible to get them to publish content in any way thats , has an rss feed and is readable by other . meaning, everyone is on facebook getting 1 like each. i cant sleep.

like this may seem non poetical but really, we dont solve the technical side then we are stuck forever in empty echo chambers

we need astral rss and federation to be able to even start to compete with major media. its on us to federate everything, no matter the cost. we need to reach people somehow, enter through their phones and get these messages through, and make them forget the tv.

i really like
https://vozesdedentro.noblogs.org

thei're a support group for people who have been jailed and help them get their letters through.

i've syndicated their blog to our own news portal, and its now being re-re-shared on anrachist federation which to me is already a really good situation. an example of how i think rss is really cool

Eviction of STOP in Porto, the largest DIY Studio in Europe.

7000+ people marched today in defense of culture as STOP in Porto, the largest DIY Studio space in Europe, where 500 artists work daily, was forcibly evicted by police on the 18th of July.

Official news media (and police) reported 1.5 thousand people, but the organization believes we were somewhere between 5 to 7 thousand people on the street.

The chaos erupted earlier this week, when a police opperation reminiscent of the ones for the “war on drugs”, a much larger and deadly matter, with 200+ “opperations” in the last months, with heavily armed gendarme, represses the neighbouhoods of the city.

At 22:30, the police wanted to re-open the street. Clearly, people were in the street, so the police sent 8 motorcicles and then a city “trash cleaner” truck came. The people were calm, but said clearly that in a way, they didnt like it. Reminiscent of struggles of the city, were people chanted “O Porto é nosso” , “A cidade é nossa” The city is ours, and will be until we die.

This forced eviction “despejo”, of Centro Comercial Stop, has sent shockwaves across the region. due to media coverage, the city hall is backing up, while experimenting new forms of social control.

Meanwhile, the city is in a war like state.

.
About a few papers on fire at the police headquarters:

(this part is more emotional than trustable, but it was fun!)

As to anything that may be reported as fire, there was no fire, the firefighters went to an air-conditioner and applied a red can of firestopper for 7 seconds, clearly having fun, while onlookers cheered. then the hole commitive left. the police seemed “not aware” of the situation at all.

Very important to note that no apparent motive has been given as to why any of these public “agencies” have behaved like this…

The firefighters were put by polititians on high alert, on a meeting that happened precisely during the protest, because of STOP’s “fire risk”. but in the end, they went at midnight in a huge and first reponse operation, to the police station instead…

The police station ( which had a small fire going in their balcony, a couple papers were apparently thrown) but the motive for such a large intervention is that the city hall, in trying to deviate our capacity to see that they are in fact, doing these actions, like selling the whole neighbourhood, in a “contest” of “ideas” and accepting a poor idea, out of only three(!)?(!) put the firefighters on extremely high alert, on that same day. Because for years they say that STOP is prone to fire, and they want to “avoid a catastrophe”.

So it was really fun when three huge fire trucks and several ambulances were coming to raid the police station!

As to why it is happening, it’s being called speculation, traffic in nfluence, and lots of money. artists are the tip of the iceberg, in what may well become a huge scandall in the city.

The plans are public, they want to sell the neighbourhood for €45M+, an architecture project has been approved. Now they axpected the artists to just accept being kicked out, but the fight has just started.

Already a series of scandals has been erupting, with the president of one of the artists association being called out for selling the artists to power. Its all part of a larger scheme to make the huge multimillion euro project happen, and kick out the punks…

Florida meteorologist Jeff Berardelli is quickly earning a reputation as an excellent communicator about science and our increasingly dangerous climate crisis.

Here are a few excerpts from his most recent article...

Last week, Earth broke a record for its hottest day in 120,000 years.

This summer will continue to set new all-time record hot global days. And along with that, many other records will be shattered as well.

But no matter how hot it gets as the steady drum beat of human-caused climate heating beats on, the summer of 2023 will be considered a “cool” summer in a couple of decades.

The rate of warming today is unprecedented in the past 20,000 years. In fact, coming out of the last ice age, it took 10,000 years for the Earth’s average temperature to warm 3 degrees C.

Astonishingly, humans — due to the burning of fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions — will likely cause the same amount of warming in 200 years. That means our current warming rate is 50 times that of the natural warming rate that followed the most recent ice age.

Take a look at the visual below. The message is quite simple and stark. On the scale of thousands of years, this visual illustrates that Earth’s temperature is now shooting straight up.

@dragonfly is a non-owned "brand" so it ticks that box and works for outreach.

We need to reboot the "process" so indymedia can start to work agen, to do this we need fresh codebases, outreach and training.

dragonfly,

@witchescauldron outreach yes and training yes, but who is still active? Indymedia Argentina, Greece and so many more

and are they part of this process?

dragonfly,

@strypey in Portugal we still mantain an online Radio, and our hope is to recover the indymedia concept and start a new website (down since 2018)
these questions are still important, i think, and indymedia in a way is still a good concept
indymedia.pt

dragonfly,

@strypey thanks for engaging in this discussion
yeah, it is a very good concept, especially the idea of doing journalism in a very different way than before

Barroso is a region in northern Portugal, classified as world heritage for agriculture by the FAO - United Nations, one of the few left in Europe where sustainable farming practices are still the rule.

A canadian/british mining company called Savannah now wants to destroy it.

The opening the largest open air lithium mine in Europe, is already planned, and if we do nothing, about to start in 2024.

This will feed German and French electric car production, with a so called value chain crossing all Europe, up to the swedish regions where another war is ongoing, against ore mining and car battery factories.

They have been called lithium wars, and resistance is heating up.

We currently are waiting for the 31 of May, when the Environmental Agency from the government will make a final decision on the Mine, and unfortunately, a YES-GO is expected. There will be resistance!

There is this awesome doc by my friend, done after the Zapatistas were in Barroso: (ENG SUBS)

I've covered it for the BBC Radio 4's The Scramble for Rare Earths “The Hidden Paradox” (ENGLISH)

(altough the BBC is not exactly on our side)

We also spoke with two activists from Sweden, about our common struggles (ENGLISH)

Although we know that historically Europe has been guilty in the exploitation of the worlds resources, it now is turning inside, selling it's own peasants and native peoples to the trans-nacional businesses. This in no way can be confused with historical reparations, as we do not wish to impose the brunt of the so-called green transition on any people's or ecosystems. The only option is De-growth and the end of consumerism and extractivism, not Green Capitalism and electric cars.

This just helps the fossil and gas economies to thrive, by on the one hand, not offering a real solution, and on the other, trying to create a mentality which says that opposition to green capitalism is reactionary.

Und auch deshalb ist die Digitalisierung, die früher oder später unweigerlich auf eine Post-Privacy-Gesellschaft herausläuft, in erster Linie eine Dystopie:

"As abortion bans across the nation are implemented and enforced, law enforcement is turning to social media platforms to build cases to prosecute women seeking abortions or abortion-inducing medication – and online platforms like Google and Facebook are helping. "
