Y'know how there's a pattern of behavior where someone says something is bad about the tech industry or community or OSS software or something, and then every single nerd within a 50 square mile radius says WELL ACKTUALLY??

I just realized that if, like, even 10% of them just... Sat down and spent some energy fixing the problem instead of insulting someone for experiencing it, we would've solved all those issues by now

@hazelweakly The only thing I disagree with in the whole thread is PHP, but that’s because I have scars 😁

After thinking more about AI making programming obsolete.

@matthewskelton @carnage4life It’s (more or less) the same logical flaw that’s repeated at least once a decade, by people who’ve never read No Silver Bullet. The hard part of coding is not typing. But I still think that a future generation of LLMs might be useful assistants.

(The current generation are dreadful and an environmental horrorshow to boot)

Is it just me or "do humans have free will" one of those completely pointless, abstract, hypothetical discussions that simply doesn't matter one god damn bit?

@codinghorror As others have said, the first problem is defining what you mean by free will.

But if we’re answering the question “given my biology, life experiences and the current situation, is my next action predetermined or is it unpredictable?”, then yes, I’d say it’s worth asking. Because if the answer is “predetermined” then that has huge implications for morality, law, equality and how we measure and reward achievement.

If we believed we don’t have free will, maybe we’d be kinder.

Github, NPM, VS Code. It kind of sneaks up on you when you finally realize it.

@ramsey @carnage4life What do you use instead?

How do you hire someone who has to be the oil in the gears of Development, who has to persuade the whole organisation into working in the smoothest way possible, without actually having any authority?

A good place to start would be this post by @hazelweakly, "So So You Want to Hire for Developer Tooling".
