At my latest competition I booked a 29.5s time for solving a Rubik's Cube. The judge at my station said "Wow", not because it was an amazing time, but because they never expected a random old dude to score it. Defying expectations, FTW. https://www.worldcubeassociation.org/persons/2023JALK02

@gruber If you haven’t seen this, yet, you might be interested in Summoning Salt’s “The History of Tetris World Records” (all of Salt’s videos are great, BTW):

@ddribin@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber Yeah, Salt’s videos seem to have gotten almost exponentially longer, over time. ;-) I never found it boring or slow moving though. There’s just a surprising amount of content!

Tangentially related, this “Running with Speed” documentary is narrated by Summoning Salt, and there’s a lot of classic game goodness: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-1jiOTjgRo

When did "IT"/"sysadmin" become "DevOps"? I must have missed the memo on that one...

@schwa Do you use VS Code with “just” ? if so, which extension do you use? Both listed in the “just” README are not actively developed.

    @schwa They're going to have to pry printf from my cold, dead hands. It's amazing that it scales down to embedded devices (using a UART) and up to debugging race conditions in multithreaded code.

    PSA: Always read the release notes.

    I upgrade Borg backup on some servers to v1.2 a while back and missed this key info:

    > Separate "borg compact" needs to be used to free repository space. Borg < 1.2 always compacted at the end of repo-writing commands …

    I didn’t notice this and wondered why my repo kept growing larger and larger. Ran “borg compact” and freed up 14G, out of 39G, on my (Linode) backup volume.

    https://www.borgbackup.org/releases/borg-1.2.html

    ddribin,
    @ddribin@mastodon.social avatar

    @marczak I don’t run a Borg server, per se, but I attach a volume to my Linux servers. So to Borg, it’s just a local drive, which is used for backup. My servers are on Linode, and the block storage volume needed for Borg is pretty cheap.

    I like that it’s fast and local, if I need to restore something. I currently backup to one of my Macs at home, for an “offsite” backup” (also using Borg), but BorgBase would be a nice alternative to that. But backing up to home is “free”.

    Another new blog post!

    "Overall Progress with rsync”
    https://www.dribin.org/dave/blog/archives/2024/01/21/rsync-overall-progress/

    TLDR, use: “rsync --info=progress2 --human-readable --no-inc-recursive”

    ddribin,
    @ddribin@mastodon.social avatar

    @schwa Yeah, I used to use "-P" which was an alias for "--partial --progress", but it sucked when there were lots of small-ish files.

    @schwa Were they the same model/speed? I've been using 5400 RPM WD Red Plus, but been very reluctant to upgrading to 7200 RPM Red Pro, because of possible extra noise.

    ddribin,
    @ddribin@mastodon.social avatar

    @schwa Ah, that's a shame as Red Plus caps out at 14TB. Thanks for confirming for me... 🤦‍♂️

    @gruber I love the classic “Fuck Everything, We’re Doing Five Blades”Onion article, but the best thing is that it is now real:

    TIL there was a 6800 [sic!] CPU. Which was the 8-bit predecessor to the 68000 the first Mac used.

    ddribin,
    @ddribin@mastodon.social avatar

    @uliwitness Fun fact: The ubiquitous MOS 6502 was originally designed to be a cheaper version of the 6800. And MOS was founded by a bunch of folks who used to work on the 6800.

    "The design team had formerly worked at Motorola on the Motorola 6800 project; the 6502 is essentially a simplified, less expensive and faster version of that design."

    The US national 3x3 speed cubing final is streaming now if interested! https://cubingusa.org/nationals/2023

    @danielpunkass That was very impressive. He's so good. Didn't see what happened in the 3rd round, where he got 5th. Glad he got that out of his system before the final round. ;-)

    ddribin,
    @ddribin@mastodon.social avatar

    @danielpunkass Yeah, 3x3 world records are exceedingly rare, these days. He did get a 5x5 WR, I think? Did you happen to see that? Hope you had a good time. Looks like your son did really well! Congrats!

    Managed to pull off a new speedcube personal best (PB) of 17.060s.

    Got a full last layer skip, so it's mostly luck. The chances of a last layer skip is allegedly 1 in ~15,000.

    And I had another last layer skip earlier today (and got 22s). I've used up all my luck for the next year and a half, or so!

    ddribin,
    @ddribin@mastodon.social avatar

    @danielpunkass Thats great! You've brought it down a lot, already!

    @danielpunkass @incanus One of my future side projects is to reverse engineer the Speed Stacks protocol and make an HDMI output using this cheap FPGA board.
