there’s a big need for something stronger than , but more flexible and cheaper than a giant all-knowing .

A great part about RAG is that it’s just a database. You just issue INSERT/UPDATE and yeah, that’s how you maintain knowledge. No million dollar training process

chromosundrift,
@chromosundrift@mastodon.social avatar

@kellogh how did you get to the conclusion that AGI is circumscribed by symbolic reasoning? I guess I don't have a satisfying definition of AGI. I expect AGI will be assessed by moving goalposts to a feature set likely to depend on RAG in practice.

One thing I've realized is that when I'm working on an animated generative work, I have a tendency to sit at my desk and watch it for long stretches of time. Makes it a little challenging to get things done. 😅

It's also a PITA to try to export video on a regular basis, so I end up just posting screenshots from several minutes into the animation, which feels a little underwhelming. "It's cool! Trust me." 😝

@jeffpalmer yeah I regularly dream of the ideal video export workflow while watching. Couldn't I just throw a bunch of configured sketches into a batch-processor that conveniently preps piles of baked videos I can selectively one-click publish?

chromosundrift,
@chromosundrift@mastodon.social avatar

@jeffpalmer ooh that's neat. Reminds me how Ableton Push 3 lets you capture your most recent n bars of synth noodling as if you had previously hit record knowing genius was about to flow.

I'm thinking of writing a very small Rust bitmap-font renderer for my Pocket RISC-V project, but I'm stuck on the problem of what would be a cool demo for it, because of course if I did it I'd want a cool demo. I have this markov chain text generator so I could just do that, but then I got stuck on what to build the model from. Stuck on Lucky's speech from Waiting for Godot and risking the wrath of the Beckett estate, or the collected works of Marx & Goldman and calling it a manifesto generator.

chromosundrift,
@chromosundrift@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc the wrath of the Beckett estate would make the demo cooler!

Finally there are some civil servants who send letters to the Dutch government with the request to protect civilians in Gaza and not to look away from war crimes, on both sides

I totally agree that Hamas should be removed but not in a way where it takes down most of the civilian population otherwise it'll make you just as worse

When anger leads, the outcome will only be much worse in the end I think

chromosundrift,
@chromosundrift@mastodon.social avatar

@stux Hamas should be removed? If this means that Hamas leaders should be killed, at least it should be acknowledged that this will not have lasting benefit. This practical omission is what makes me think real solutions are not considered and the primary purpose of this reaction is political messaging. Who thinks this a viable milestone on the path to peace and harmony in the Middle East?

A friend of mine who also has EDS built themselves an awesome DIY monitor arm that allows them to play games on their switch or steam deck while lying down, and I'm thinking of building something similar for myself so I can work on my projects after work again.

I'd need to work out a somewhat sturdier design than theirs, but I'm less concerned about that so much as finding a good keyboard and trackball so I don't injure my hands and wrists.

chromosundrift,
@chromosundrift@mastodon.social avatar

@aeva I looked into virtual keyboards for quadriplegic people using a mouth joystick. I don’t have easy access to my notes right now but I remember discovering there were some decent open source virtual keyboard projects on GitHub which seemed modular and quality enough to use. I think I was focused on Linux but worth checking because there is hidden work there. Also you mention ergodox - my moonlander has vesa mounts. Good luck.

@aeva @bonkydog wow that sucks. Have you looked into speech to code systems?

#Russia - state of terror

A country with so many resources, people could have a wonderful life but instead there's this small dictator called Putler who wants aboslute power so the people end up with nothing or war

Why would anyone believe or even die for such a terrible demon..

Please Russians, stand up against the terror and overthrow the regime! Fight for a better future for yourself! It has to come from within

'People' like Putler should not have a place on this planet :blobfoxsignno:

@stux how did it get this way? How can gradual change be actioned?

chromosundrift,
@chromosundrift@mastodon.social avatar

@stux I notice that totalitarian regimes hate internet access and such. This is a signal.

chromosundrift,

I've been told people on this website enjoy me trying to think through computer problems out loud while in incredible pain, so good news: I'm taking my new Thinkpad T14 (https://mastodon.social/@mcc/111218408629532857) out of the box and I'm going to install Linux on it first thing. So expect a LOT of complaining.

chromosundrift,
@chromosundrift@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc @mikebabcock not using git to access git repositories? Does this imply you bang raw protocol bits with your bare fists or exclusively use higher-level applications and repo services?

chromosundrift,
@chromosundrift@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc well I’m with you there. Thanks for your contributions. FWIW I heard Linus expected front ends to be ubiquitous and essential for most people. Half the time I use a nice IDE front end, half the time I wear the hair shirt of git cli.
