How to quickly check if your system may be affected by the recent XZ utils supply chain backdoor. Open your terminal, enter:

xz --version

bad: versions 5.6.0 or 5.6.1
ok: 5.4.6.

The malicious code could affect sshd authentification (CVE-2024-3094). Updates and downgrades for SuSE, Fedora, Kali and other distros are available.

Pop!_OS or Debian stable versions are not affected but it never hurts to double-check.

@jake4480 I was lucky enough to see them live several times mid 90's (Kapital and N.A.T.O. tour). The live shows were bombastic, weird and avantgardistic. They've always sparked quite a controversy with their totalitarian references and over the top absurd Nazi and Socialism aesthetics and iconography.

First impressions of #Synduality Echoes of Ada, closed beta: this is going to be a very niche game. It's a PvEvP Extraction Shooter with a strong focus on PvP. The gameplay loop is simple: get out, gather crystals while other non-union players and some monsters attack you. And you are on a timer. And there is acid rain. If you succeed, you can upgrade your base, weapons and mech. Rinse & repeat.

It's supposed to be thrilling but for me it's rather frustrating, just let me bring back my loot 🙈

Forecast for monday night: Solar eruptions are sending a stream of particles towards Earth, creating spectacular auroras in both hemispheres.

The aurora borealis will be potentially visible on Monday night in the US as far south as the midwest. The northern lights could also be visible in northern Britain. In the southern hemisphere, the aurora australis could be visible in southern Australia, from Victoria to Western Australia.

Found my iAudio M3 Digital Audio Player from 2004. 20 years old and still working, now look at these features:

  • slimmer than the OG iPod, slightly bigger than a credit card
  • excellent sound
  • 20GB Toshiba 1,8" replaceable harddrive
  • format-agnostic, direct encoding
  • supports lossless FLAC! (see display screenshot) and a ton of formats
  • USB 2.0
  • Line-in INPUT
  • Mic, audio recording
  • Rockbox support

Such a cool device, love the minimalistic design. Next project: replacing the battery.

A silver, metallic device, about the size of a deck of playing cards or slightly bigger than a credit card with 3 round buttons for play, forward, previous - very minimalistic, no display. On the right side: a volume dial, a lock button and a recording button.

Got a killer #MusicWomenWednesday for this week. When I was a kid in the 90s, I had this awesome Wax Trax video compilation (on VHS!) from 1994, it had KMFDM, Coil and Laibach on it (and a ton of other great bands) including BRAINDEAD SOUNDMACHINE.

This was the first way I ever heard this great Patsy Cline song, this unforgettable 'metaldisco' (as they liked their genre to be called) cover. It's totally wild and probably underappreciated.

@jake4480 Very cool, thanks for sharing. These pre-computer era music videos were something else. Reminds me of my industrial years 😂 I was lucky enough to see many of Wax Trax' bands live in the 90s: KMFDM, Laibach, Frontline Assembly, Ministry, Front 242, Skinny Puppy, Clock DVA, VNV Nation, KLF... Wax Trax was the US label for many artists in the European electro/industrial scene (Play It Again Sam) and living in Berlin at that time I've got to see quite a few of them.

Good news: Just got this e-mail from Tidal. HiRes FLAC audio quality will be available for every subscriber starting April 10. They are finally getting rid of the former "Hifi Plus" plan which costs almost twice as much as the regular sub.

This is great news for music lovers and brings the Tidal plans more on par with Qobuz HiRes. I've just been testing both streaming services and both are great Spotify alternatives but with slightly different pros and cons.

@jake4480 Great post! And good advice really, it may seem obvious to have some sort of spreadsheet but it isn't - I used to keep my favorite digital albums and tracks sorted into playlists in various apps like itunes, Foobar or Mediamonkey or later in Spotify. Except that this no longer worked when I changed platforms and some bands are no longer available for streaming or when I couldn't remember a name. Drove me crazy. I'm back to simple lists in Joplin, a FOSS cross-platform note taking app.

When I’m done with Hogwarts I think I should play Kingdom Come Deliverance. 🤔 I tend to give extra points to a video game with European story setting, and some points on top of that if it’s Slavic in origin. Negative points for American and Japanese setting. Those are way over-represented.

Thoughts on KCD choice?

An armored figure on horseback overseeing villagers working by a river in a medieval setting.

chris,
@chris@mstdn.games avatar

@darth It's very good and worth playing. Made by a Czech studio, set in Bohemia and visually still very impressive. It's very hard though, because it tries to be as realistic and historically accurate as possible, meaning you need to eat and sleep, bad food will make you sick and an arrow or a hit with a sword can kill you. It's not a power fantasy like The Witcher, you'll need to train your actual (controller) skills and it takes time to learn how to fight with a sword.
