xunit, to random

We just shipped new prerelease versions of the core framework, the Visual Studio adapter, and analyzers.

Most notable: This removes support for UWP from xunit.runner.visualstudio as that has been deprecated by Microsoft (and us now, too). Minimum framework for xunit.runner.visualstudio is now net462+ and net6.0+.

This is getting close to final for 2.5.0 so please test!

Release notes:

@xunit I said it last time, I'll say it again in case you missed it. 😁 Now is the time to get features/bugs fixed (for all of the core framework, analyzers, and Visual Studio adapter). It's not clear if/when there will be another 2.x code base release.

Got the new code signing up and running for @xunit (got one project done, just need to finish the rest today). That means I will probably push out another 2.5.0 prerelease build this weekend (and this will include both the core framework and xunit.runner.visualstudio).

@piki @martinwoodward Yeah, a decent amount of this was showing people relatively new features that GitHub shipped after dog-fooding it first. 😃

Today I learned that the internet slang "simp" probably comes from the word "simper"

I was watching The Spanish Princess and Henry VIII says, "If we centralized the military, my father wouldn't have to beg and simper to you all like a serving maid."

@LilahTovMoon @scottgal Most of the usage I've seen isn't necessarily meant to be demeaning, but there definitely feels like there's a bit of pity in it.

If you're coming to Microsoft Build in Seattle this week, I'll be there. I can be bribed primarily with brown liquor, but good food is a close second. You know, if there's some key feature you want in @xunit or whatever. 😉

Oh, and I'll have stickers with me.

Been running through the backlog of issues on https://github.com/xunit/visualstudio.xunit/issues. Apologies to those who have opened issues and never gotten answers; it appears to have a few years of stuff hanging around. A LOT are being marked as "please provide a repro project", which I'm sure is not an exciting response to an issue that a year or three old, but I'm at least trying to peek at everything and see what might still be valid.

Anybody else noticing that wslServer keeps running in the background even long after you've shut down VS Code? This feels recent-ish to me, though I don't use WSL nearly as much as I used to.

These processes being active is stopping the WSL distro from shutting down. I have to re-open a shell to it, kill the wslServer process, and then WSL will properly shut down. #wsl #wsl2 #vscode #linux

bradwilson,

@alexleduc No, in this case just running kill 17101 (the process ID of the root process) is enough to make the whole tree of "stuck" things go away.

I don't have a one liner that always works. I just have to run ps aux, find the PID, then run the kill.

Reported the issue. If you are experiencing this, please add your +1 to it: https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/issues/183086

Actively pushing against others to adopt your protocol is how you ensure that your protocol won't "win." I'm a firm believer that a decentralized protocol will be the future of social networks/feeds as we know them. I don't know if it is going to be or or something else. But I believe a decentralized protocol will be the future. But the winner will be the one that centralized-acting services adopt. That's a good thing for everyone. It means users have data portability. 🧵

@chucker @Pwnallthethings @Migueldeicaza @larryosterman @film_girl Not just for the Mac. Project K (which eventually became .NET Core) started with bits from Silverlight on Windows. In fact the netcore TFM meant "Silverlight" (specifically for Win8/WP8), which is why .NET Core ended up using netcoreapp.

I really think it was a stroke of genius for Windows to support Android apps natively.

I do think they haven’t done enough to advance that ecosystem though.

Got to follow through folks!

bradwilson,
@bradwilson@mastodon.social avatar

@Migueldeicaza @anizocani The problems feel more political than technical. The app store story is a big problem, which if fixed could drive more usability, which would then allow them to focus more on core performance. WSL 2 shows us that it can be done, but they need the political will (and a better app store) to make it happen. I just don't see Google wanting to play ball, though.
