@ai6yr Don't know off-hand. Did a quick search without luck. It's part of the San Juan's of the Rocky Mountains (which doesn't narrow it down much.) There was gold mining along the base. Don't know if "Silver" is due to mining or its color. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

@ai6yr
"From a distance the massive conglomerate of the Telluride formation is light reddish gray or gray. In detail the color is influenced mainly by the color of the constituent boulders. These consist of a great mixture of relatively resistant rock types red and gray sandstone, gray limestone, bluish-gray or gray quartzite, gray granite, gneiss, and dark-gray schist; the sandy matrix is stained somewhat reddish by iron oxide."

Sunrise East of Mather Point

As I post this the sun is just about to peek over the mountain east of Albuquerque. I felt like I needed to commemorate this morning, for some reason.

Here's a 1970s edition of DUNE. Ever wonder what short story writer, memoirist, novelist, and teacher Tobias Wolff thought about the novel back then?

Well, now you can find out in a Q&A I did with Mark Stevens for my latest novel GEISHA CONFIDENTIAL.

We talk about the origin of my main character August Riordan and creative writing classes I took early in my career with Wolff and Ron Hansen.

@coggins Wow, that cover sure looked familiar. Thought there was a small chance I could put my hands on my old copy... amazingly, I found it easily, but it's the 1965 Ace edition with cover by John Schoenherr. 544 pages.

@ianRobinson @coggins It's in pretty good shape. Back cover has quotes from Arthur C. Clarke, Robert A. Heinlein, and P. Schuyler Miller, Analog.

I was going to make a spice-beer quip, but I restrained myself.

Also, food arrived.

@ianRobinson Yummy! Wish I could get that anywhere near here.

Feel free to give Dune 2 a rating even if you will withhold your comments for a while.

@ianRobinson yeah, that’s the trouble with sequels.

Long House
Bandelier National Monument, NM
[very tall photo]

A Bandelier photo from a different location than yesterday's. This view shows the Long House ruins at the foot of rhyolite tuff cliffs. Look carefully and you may see horizontal rows of holes carved in the cliff to support roof beams. See the link for more info:

@ai6yr You started a thread on bike helmets back in the mists of time. One respondent mentioned Bell and Gyro will send free replacement pads. I looked inside my helmet to see model/size and discovered the mfg date of 2011. <hand hitting forehead emoji> I've ordered a new helmet.

Cañon de Frijoles
Bandelier National Monument, NM

A view of the village of Tyuonyi and cliff dwellings (left).

"Bandelier National Monument protects over 33,000 acres of ruggedly beautiful canyon and mesa country. Petroglyphs, dwellings carved into the soft rock cliffs, and standing masonry walls pay tribute to the early days of a culture that still survives in the surrounding communities.... The Ancestral Pueblo people lived here from approximately 1150 CE to 1550 CE. They built homes carved from the volcanic tuff and planted crops in mesa top fields." from: https://www.nps.gov/band/index.htm

Looking across this broad canyon in southern #Utah always brings me peace and tranquility, so seemed an appropriate scene for #SilentSunday

Those cubical white, sandstone boulders in the foreground are the size small houses and are part of the mossback formation.

Creamsicle Sunset
El Segundo, CA

While poking around in my photos from a Spring trip to L.A., I found this unprocessed file. I loved how the sun was two-toned against the gradient of the sky and silhouette of beach and lifeguard tower.

I only added a slight amount of contrast to the RAW file, everything else is as natural as possible.

A Creamsicle is an American vanilla ice cream/orange sherbet confection that has been around since at least my childhood.

Planning some sewing projects to replace disposable plastic bags for these final uses:

  • electronics
  • med/hygiene
  • portioned calories
  • sets of portioned calories
  • cold soak bag
  • pack liner

I already have systems of bags I reuse so sizes are easy to spec. I’ll mostly use Dyneema remnants. It’s air/water tight(ish) and see thru. I’ll seam seal and add zippers to some and roll tops to others.
