Resident PHP & Jacascript iconoclast. I still think PSR is the worst, even now that I'm on Mastodon. You might remember me from Dallas PHP and Lone Star PHP.

    @pollita @scottkeckwarren i put a machine that sucks too much for modern games but still has good nvidia hardware encoding support to use to eat an hdmi stream via a usb dongle that was 30$. obs/streamlabs/wtfe then eats that and deals with the streaming from that other cpu and gpu and nic instead.

    my audio path is insane though and i don't even remember what half these cables were for.

    Have you seen those steel wire egg slicer gadgets before? Perhaps scoffed at such a silly single-use product?

    Did you know ... they can also cut mushrooms? Slice a mushroom in half, toss it on there, press down, and now you've got nice even mushroom slices.

    Just be a bit gentle with it; I recently broke mine after a few years of use - one of the wires snapped.

    @bobmagicii@phpc.social avatar

    @kboyd yeah actually if not caring to treat it like a baby so your grandchildren can pass it down to their grandchildren, those wire slicer jobbers can actually do a lot of neat things.

    last thing used mine for was to turn a bush of cilantro into flakes.

    @scottkeckwarren my first paid job was to fix an outsourced mess like this where they had 5,000 daily users willing to and waiting 49sec per page load.

    meanwhile if my weather widget takes more than 2sec to load i'm like "guess i'll never know whats happening outside" 🤣

    I've been told that if I can convince enough people about language definitions, that makes them true. Therefore:

    1. The expanded form of "enum", when referring to a single "enum", shall be "enumerator".

    2. The top part of a fraction shall be known as a "nominator", to better fit with "denominator" on the bottom.

    Thank you for attending my TED toot.

    @kboyd now paralyzed by the real possible chance there are people around me who have never heard the full word said before. kind of like how we had an entire generation of perl devs that didn't actually know any perl, just the shortcuts. 🤣

    I've been programming in PHP for 18 years and I've been developing a major developer tool for PHP for the last 7 years. And still from time to time I stumble upon a language feature I've never seen before.

    Why does this work without "return" in front of the "declare" keyword!?

    bobmagicii,
    @bobmagicii@phpc.social avatar

    @OndrejMirtes yeah... declare is weird in that if you are using it you're probably being goofy anyway. so why not go full weird mode.

    TIL: A deliberately cheesy piece of "elevator music" I wrote a decade ago was used in a game called "Five Nights at Freddy's: Special Delivery", released on iOS and Android in 2019. Recently it was used again in a Little Caesar's ad for Pretzel Crust pizza, and there are hundreds of commenters on YouTube who recognise it from the game.

    I almost never got to see how any of the music I wrote from that time got used so for me this is wild.

    spent way too much time chasing down a problem where a value was being returned null. to the point i got mad enough to dump raw sql out to study. tl;dr version:

    SELECT * FROM Users Main

    "hmmm"

    SELECT Main.* FROM Users Main

    strangely this code was working fine on the other server. i'll have to find the lulz in mariadb versions later this weekend.

    how good are the odds do you think, if i take the platters out of one hdd and transplant them into a twin where the controller board aint fkn up, that i can get a few minutes of read to nab data?

    bobmagicii, (edited )
    @bobmagicii@phpc.social avatar

    @derickr im not worried about dust contamination only need a few minutes. the magneticness doesnt just vanish tho.

    [edit] main breaking point in my research seems to be regarding calibration data to deal with imperfections in the platters.

    some suggest trying to swap the controller itself which for some reason i didn't actually consider.

    bobmagicii, (edited )
    @bobmagicii@phpc.social avatar

    @derickr not sure. lot of people [albiet, on reddit] claiming its on the platters themselves.

    it would make sense to me for the controller to have it, unless its like some sort of magical line it learns to trace.

    seagates for example apparently have "alignment rings" as well as weighted screws.

    none of the data is really important so im not against screwing around to find out.
