This morning I'm investigating the Emacs Writing Studio series (https://lucidmanager.org/tags/emacs/), which is a wonderful introduction to #emacs. Especially as it relates to writing, which is probably about 80% of what I think I would use emacs for. Happy for other suggestions, thanks!

Falling further down the #emacs RH adventures.... just discovered #orgmode and that might be the clincher for me. My writing is very much outline-driven, and I've always wanted an outliner with movable sections (had something in the early PC days that did that). When you combine all of the other functionality, #emacs gets more and more attractive. Key binding memorization is overwhelming but just saw some good advice: use M-x and functions at first. So we continue.

@cdenesha I was using Obsidian and haven't left it. Yet. But that could change. Or maybe I use both for a while.

@withoutclass Can you set Git org files to private? Have not used Git much

birv2,
@birv2@pkm.social avatar

@mykhaylo @cdenesha I'll check that out. I'm not advanced enough yet to start adding packages!

Okay #emacs people. Could I import my Obsidian markdown notes over into emacs, and then use Github for Access from Every Device? I like Obsidian's notes living on my main computer, but I also sync so I can get to them from iPad, Win11 laptop, iPhone, etc.

Okay people. Total n00b here and looking to get a nice interface. Got a dark mode going, but looking for a nice font style ala @distrotube and SystemCrafter on YT. What should I choose? Looks aren't everything, but they're a lot when you write a lot.

God help me, I'm falling down the #emacs rabbit hole.

Best #thinkpad for #coding? Looking for something cheap that I can throw #linux on.... But it's got to run everything else -- web-based mail, calendaring, etc/

#roguelike I always sleep listening to podcasts or YT videos. Last night (in my sleep), I enjoyed a 4 hour livestream of #nethack from Larry Fluckiger and woke up when he made it to the bottom level. Somehow deeply relaxing and exciting all at once. #sleepstudy

@birv2@pkm.social avatar

I'm (pretty much) enjoying my trip through the Python roguelike tutorial I'm doing. I taught beginning #python in grades 8 and 9, but we never did classes. So my head is hurting trying to keep track of all the classes spread out over 8 files, then trying to nail down how the classes are being instantiated. Glad I studied OOP (Java) at school, but a long time ago.....

Working my way through a #roguelike tutorial in #Python
and loving it! It helps that I know some Python, though I've never used classes with it before. I do have some understanding of OOP but it never came up in teaching 8th and 9th graders. So just merrily banging away with that little ASCII @ dude.

Just switched my browser to #firefox from Chrome. Mainly because of their privacy policies and lack of data mining. However, I use Google Meet, which just doesn't run as well on non-Chrome browsers. Any advice?

I just posted on X:

My days on this platform are numbered. Kind of sad because I've made a lot of friends over the last 13 years I've been here. But Musk's attack on the ADL is a bridge too far. See ya over on Mastodon! My deets are in my profile. #buhbye #seeyouonthedon

@ellane@pkm.social avatar

@dhrystone Help me out here. Trying to not need #Obsidian Sync, but I can’t find a #Markdown editor that can do ALL of the following:

  1. Read subfolders
  2. Display the complete names of files in the Library (file name on as many lines as it takes to display the name in its entirety)
  3. Allows the playing of transcluded audio files within documents
  4. iOS
  5. App takes less than 1 minute to start up (1/2) 🧵

@mlevison @ellane @EpiphanicSynchronicity @dhrystone This has been my experience as well. Depends on your level of techspertise, but I'm happy to pay for something that just works and doesn't require any thinking, set up, or heavy lifting.

Some thinking and learning in public on how to teach computer science in a progressive educational environment. Would love to hear from anyone about this!

Although I prefer journaling by hand, I have to admit that digital journaling is far more practical, safer and more secure, and I've been journaling so much more.

@liztai Great post, and I replied on your site. Sorry that I did it twice, as I had some login issues and didn't realize the first one took. I always enjoy reading your stuff!

Asking for a DM new to #5e #dnd. Running the Essentials Kit and a player wants to be a dragonborn or hexblood. These aren't in the classes available. My worry is that they both seem super overpowered for a first level character. Am I wrong?

birv2, to Minecraft
@birv2@pkm.social avatar

I'm always astounded by what #minecraft can accomplish in a classroom. Today I had a restless, not-listening, off-task group of 5th graders, and ran them through code.org's Hero's Journey. Same pedagogical goal (learn to code steps). Transition and transformation. Like I had a magic wand. They were doing virtual robotics before this, which I actually really like! Another lesson learned.

Now, how to make #PBL for CS with minecraft for this group? Gonna do it.

"When an app is cloud-based, its performance is limited by the speed of its connection to the central server and how quickly that server can reply. With a local-first app, the user’s device runs all the code. The better your laptop or smartphone gets, the more the app can do."

I now prefer to have local-first software, mostly because I want freedom from unexpected changes & more control over my data.

I have to confess that although I have taught game creation for years, I'm not much of a gamer. Don't know if it's slow twitch reflexes or boredom or what. But I've got a Steam gift card and am looking at Baldur's Gate 3. Should I pull the trigger?

@mforester That could happen! It's pretty "engaging" (read "addictive").
