I know Microsoft is a controversial company from Start Menu ads to Balmerโ€™s dancing ability. But! I have been following the AI topic pretty religiously and they have known that this would be the case for quite a while. In fact part of OpenAIโ€™s growth struggling and subsequent partnership with Microsoft involved power generation.

Microsoft has been investing in electric power including using small module nuclear reactors. Sam Altman has been putting a lot of effort into power as well, acknowledging long ago that electricity generation is critical for AI. Heโ€™s been pushing into green energy also. Exowatt, Helion, etc.

So yes, the carbon footprint is going up now because they โ€˜hadโ€™ to unleash this genie from the bottle first or someone else would have. At least they know that the need for stable electric power and green power or renewable and efficient power is necessary and have been pursuing these solutions actively.

It should be so that they really change things so that power grids are more stable and renewable energy is better utilized. So to me, there is hope they are doing the right thing and putting effort where it matters.

Iโ€™m more effing disappointed and concerned about @$$h0les like Ron Desantis doing things like this:

Climate change will be a lesser priority in Florida and largely disappear from state statutes under legislation signed Wednesday by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis that also bans power-generating wind turbines offshore or near the stateโ€™s lengthy coastline.

Critics said the measure made law by the former Republican presidential hopeful ignores the reality of climate change threats in Florida, including projections of rising seas, extreme heat and flooding and increasingly severe storms.

It takes effect July 1 and would also boost expansion of natural gas, reduce regulation on gas pipelines in the state and increase protections against bans on gas appliances such as stoves, according to a news release from the governorโ€™s office.

The moment I read โ€˜Floridaโ€™ I went ah, of course.

It absolutely should be repealed. Though lately my sense of justice is skewed.

He is truly a wonderful and selfless person. I can think of way worse people much easier than I can think of truly great people. Heโ€™s up there with Fred Rogers in my book. Jimmy, thank you for you service, bless you and your family. I hope there is no pain. ๐Ÿซ‚๐Ÿ’

Iโ€™m not a California resident but once on a visit I ate at a place. Paid the bill. No tip. Left. The shopkeeper chased me on the street to catch up and ask why I didnโ€™t tip, and wasnโ€™t the food good, etc. Embarrassed, I was with a friend who is a residentโ€ฆ I told her yes it was fine. โ€œThen why no tip?!โ€ Internally: Because itโ€™s a tip? I didnt get some kind of exceptional service there. If anything they left us alone really. So what was I tipping for exactly? why not just charge a different price, etc. Externally: โ€œOh Iโ€™m sorry. I didnโ€™t knowโ€

Okโ€ฆ Thanks for your input I guess, but as a European, the practice of tipping isnโ€™t ingrained in my culture as it may be in yours. Frankly, I find it bizarre and from the outside I also see many in your own culture find it bizarre also. If not downright predatory of businesses on customers.

If I go to McDonaldโ€™s and they serve me food. I donโ€™t tip them. the same thing happened at that smaller restaurant. If all they did is walk the food to my table and thatโ€™s it, then why am I tipping some percent extra for them to walk the plates 3 meters (~15 feet)?

You were right though. And itโ€™s only because we were all so furious about what they were doing and raised such a fuss about it that they decided to renege on that.

OK, but whatโ€™s the cut off? What if we say itโ€™s 70. But someone would turn 70 on the last year that they are president. And letโ€™s say itโ€™s the second term for example. So then what? theyโ€™re completely not allowed to run Because the last month that they are 69 years old, they would turn 70 and his term would be slightly longer than that. Or the reverse, someone is running at 34 but would turn 35 Just prior to becoming president, assuming he would win. Also, some people at age 70 are doing fantastic, and some have a lot of health problems. Some with those health problems are still mentally sharp, and some without health problems can be mental declined due to say dementia. So I think that is a little more complicated than just setting arbitrary limits. Last comment, our life spans are getting longer and longerโ€ฆ So then what? If it eventually needs to be extended, that also would become a huge debate.

Still verify when you can. AI will get better at spitting out graphics like this.

Yes at least they bring them back down. Most companies just said fuck it, letโ€™s keep the price jacked! Greedy Capitalism at its second worst. First worst is how they destroy the environment.

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek surprised by how much laying off 1,500 employees negatively affected the streaming giantโ€™s operations (fortune.com)

When Spotify announced its largest-ever round of layoffs in December, CEO Daniel Ek hailed a new age of efficiency at the streaming giant. But four months on, it seems he and his executives werenโ€™t prepared for how tough filling in for 1,500 axed workers would be....
