In The Art of the Bird, devout birder and ornithologist Roger J. Lederer celebrates the heyday of avian illustration in the last four hundred years in forty artists’ profiles, beginning with the work of Flemish painter Frans Snyders in the early 1600s and continuing through to contemporary artists like Elizabeth Butterworth, famed for her portraits of macaws.

“I saw the dead body of a father who was basically holding his child perhaps around three years of age. They were burned and charred. We couldn’t separate them. So we had to put both of them together in a body bag.”

The Kuwaiti Hospital in Rafah in southern Gaza has shut down after two of its medical staff were killed in an Israeli attack just outside its front doors.

The facility is Rafah’s main hospital and was where most of the victims of an Israeli attack on a tent camp for displaced people in Rafah were seeking treatment.

Out of Gaza’s 36 , only 16 are functional, but only in a limited manner. All medical facilities lack critical supplies, staff and medicine.

More than 20,000 people who are either wounded or suffer from chronic or terminal illnesses like cancer, diabetes and cardiac problems need to be evacuated from Gaza.

But since the Israeli occupation of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, no sick or wounded Palestinian has been able to leave Gaza, something that could mean death for many.

Instead, for those murdered in Rafah, their last moments on this earth were filled with unimaginable fear as bombs rained down on their tents.

What a monstrous failure of humanity."
