I've come to the conclusion that steam forums are incredibly toxic and decided i will never go there to ask for help

Varyag,

@lea the only thing the Steam forums have been consistent at, is finding the absolute stupidest opinions and takes, for years. I swear they're worse than Youtube comments used to be, or those weird comment boxes at the end of political news articles, right before those got taken over by chatbots.

Oh yeah, I sent the faulty PSU that was crashing my PC (I am 100% certain that was the cause, as since replacing it I haven't had a single crash or hardware issue while nothing else on my system changed, and it has been several months now) back to the store I bought it from. They assure me that there is nothing wrong with it, and want me to either recommend some other tests, or to send it back.

I'm a bit peeved. Tempted to get my 100USD paper weight back and tell them they've lost a customer, but on the other hand I should probably not go around burning bridges.

Varyag,

@ChiralTheAlien yeah I've had a PSU fail like that. Working normally until something requires more power draw and then BAM shutdown. Sometimes just opening the browser made it go poof. No idea how they test for that but that's absolutely a hardware problem.

Well there it goes, I found another tiny Doom channel on YT, and that linked me to a thing they were working on, which is the Doom Master WADazine, a free Doom themed online publication. So, here's a link to it:

While trying to decide on what wads to play next on Doom, I set up DoomRunner on my Linux laptop, then made a Plutonia preset there (with the lovely community MIDI pack) and then on the main PC decided to try out Freedoom. Although after playing the first two stages on 4 different sourceports for testing, I kinda tired myself out of them? :neofox_laugh_nervous: I'll give it a break and come back later. Some of the textures used also kinda tired my eyes, so instead of continuing on, I'll go play some chill RTS now.

Actually, I might use the Linux PC as excuse to do Freedoom there too, and when I'm on this one I'll play some other wad. I do have a massive list of them to go through, from community classics to some other random ones I found.

Varyag,

Okay, I have decided. Plutonia and Freedoom on the Linux laptop on breaks from work, and Memento Mori and Hellbound on the main PC in the evenings. Should make for a good mix.

Finished playing through UAC Ultra. Good shit. Got pretty intense on combat near the end, had some cool boss fights in stage 9 but stage 10 brought the hammer down, with a long combat sequence in open hellscape with constant environmental damage and slowly ambushing you with giant hordes of monsters, while drip feeding ammo and hazmat suits, culminating in finding the BFG and letting it rip into a crowd of Hell Nobles. The triple Archvile ambush after that was barely a scare as I still had plasma cells.
Overall great experience and I might replay it with mods in the future. I think that's what I'm going to do from now on, play wads first on vanilla settings, then come back with cool mods on mapsets I already know. Beats the problem of trying to tie different gameplay altering mods to mapsets I don't know the vibes of. Worst thing would be ending up with a survival horror modset to a slaughterwad!

Oh wow randomly found a really good article on Doom source ports, explaining what they are, citing examples, and how to use them. The only thing missing, is my favorite sourceport and launcher: Woof! and Doom Explorer. So, in the spirit of helping any one wanting to get into Doom, I'm pinning this on my profile.

Second link is the github page for Woof as my personal recommendation, but you could also use DSDA-Doom.
And third link is the download page for Doom Explorer, with the caveat that it currently does not have a Linux build and for that I use ZDL instead.

Finally getting to play what was actually the FIRST custom wad that I ever downloaded for Doom: UAC Ultra. I had never actually played more than 2 maps of this, and I felt like I should finally correct that. Made it to map 4 already and oh boy I do like this wad now. It's dark, moody visual aesthetics (created with the help of Quake textures) contrasts a tight and somewhat challenging combat gameplay in hallways with clever traps, and fantastic pumping music.

What the hell this is so cool! Basically a Dark Souls 4 bringing a whole new game and mechanics from Elden Ring into the DS3 engine, made entirely by fans. Absolutely impressive.

Woke up today from tossing around in bed with two things stuck in my head: the damn Cerveza Cristal meme song, and the idea to make a Doom mod in MBF21 standard to convert the weapon sets from the Final Doomer+ mod for GZDoom. Now, I know I won't be able to convert all the special weapons and effects from that engine with these limitations, but a few of them should be easy, right? Would be a cool project to learn Doom modding.

By failing to compile DSDA-Doom on my Linux machine today, I may have found my new favorite Doom sourceport:
Woof! is another sourceport that implements MBF21, based on the lineage of Boom (but apparently forked off before it became PrBoom+ and later DSDA)

and it just plays so good
It might have just been how I keep DSDA to the original framerate of 35fps (because if I let it go any higher I get extreme screen warp when I turn, to the point where I start getting nauseous) but with this one I can put the framerate at wherever the fuck I want, and it runs and looks fine; I left it at 70 to be more smooth and not break the animations of the mod I was using, because yes, this is also perfectly compatible with MBF21 wads and mods!

Brutal Doom has an update in testing phase!
I thought the dev was done, but he decided to do a big optimization update because this mod is extremely laggy in maps with a lot of enemies (and on phones, where a surprising amount of people main Doom)

I'm playing it now and it feels really good, also feels nostalgic to me, given how much I played BD before, even if I notice some small differences like some weapon sprites or sounds. Overall I guess it's time to do another playthrough with the mod I once almost considered my vanilla Doom state.

Also, I just finished the wonderful RYLAYEH.wad on modded Doom 2 with GD_Echidna and that was a really really fun ride. Very interesting and complex map design, tons of enemies to mow down with my overpowered weapons and a cool final stage that brought me back to the start of the first stage!
I'll just uh, refrain from listening to Metallica again for a few weeks. I think I listened to The Call of Ktulu on loop at least 50 times already. I still love the song but uhhh... yeah.

Mega Man

The Super Fighting Robot

Two scientists just working together. One goes crazy because he's envious of the other and he reprograms them under his control.

Luckily Rockman is a robot that exists. And he can copy powers from the robot masters. All with their weaknesses Rock(man), paper, scissors style.

The first game is arguably the toughest but if you pull through it is quite the series.

Varyag,

@GamingWolf I don't think I ever liked Megaman, except I tried playing the Megaman X games several times, but never finished one.
Instead I used to love the Zero series on the GBA lol. Sometimes I don't understand myself. I wanna try going through Rockman and Bass on the SNES at some point.

Rathalos down! Next up, Diabolos!

Varyag,

@ChiralTheAlien that's just how the Raths go. Poison-Fire-Stun combo is almost the signature Rath status effect, usually leading to cart. Takes a bit to get used to it, especially if you're playing World with all it's newly made monsters with flashy movesets, and then come the old school wyverns with their simpler, clunky movesets. You'll get the hang of it, eventually.

Varyag,

@ChiralTheAlien the Ancient Forest is a terrible map, terrible to navigate and even worse to fight on. Very pretty and makes a big impression, but terrible in actual gameplay.
Positioning is the most important skill to master in MH, the Greatsword is entirely dependent on it, and all other weapons too, to a lesser extent. With enough experience you'll know things like where to stand so the next attack doesn't hit you. Because there truly are some attacks that you cannot dodge if you're under them (like literally everything the Yian Garuga does)

I was looking for #pixelartist to help with this project I'm working on... I posted here and on the bird site... but I had to delete my post there in about 10 minutes because I was getting so much spam from anime avatars who ALL refused to show their work and kept asking me to dm them. Anybody know what that's all about? Felt like a scam of some kind, but I'm not sure what.

Varyag,

@ward most likely, considering the current state of Xitter...

Have I posted about this Doom mod before? I don't care, I'll post it anyway: GENOCIDE DEVICE ECHIDNA is a fucking cool mod. Hyperviolent 80's anime style, demon-slaying badass cyborg lady with completely overpowered weapons. Throw at your hardest maps and monster packs. Enjoy!

@revengeday It's actually already happening. LLMs are getting poisoned by consuming an onslaught of machine-created garbage text as their training data.
