Made a quick export of a very awesome and big map with multiple towns, a big castle and a hidden magic tree!

There's not much gameplay yet but soon..

Despite how hard nosed I can come off sometimes I really do try to learn and get better.

One of the things I'd like to know, or learn, is how to communicate in a constructive and effective way to designers, developers, and engineers, who have constructed a story in their head based on data, logs, and studies when that story falls afoul of reality.

Data is great and there's a lot of insight to be had there for sure. But reality also often flies in the face of data. Anyone know how to do that?

Tekchip,
@Tekchip@mastodon.social avatar

I'm open to small snippets of suggestions, direct coaching, or training if anyone has them. I seem to have a hard time conveying, or convincing, those sorts of folks that what they're trying to do might look good on paper but is actually not a great idea.

y'all. everyone has known the lock icon has been problematic since forever but no one has had the guts to kill it. until now!!!!!!! that's right baybeee!!!! we're gonna do it!!!!!
https://blog.chromium.org/2023/05/an-update-on-lock-icon.html

Tekchip,
@Tekchip@mastodon.social avatar

@sereeena Is this not a fundamental miss understanding, by whomever is making this decision, of the problem?

11% of users know what that lock means. The rest miss understand it.

Solution! Now 100% of users can't tell the https state, at a glance, and that 89% still have no idea whats going on!

Enjoy your extra clicks knowledgable assholes who might care to know their security state at a glance. /S 🥺

Tekchip,
@Tekchip@mastodon.social avatar

@ligniform @sereeena I too had a tough time parsing that icon.

I had a pretty solid modern art moment where I'm tilting my head sideways trying to figure out what that's supposed to be. I think the problem is the length of the lines. On Firefox it's elongated and comes off as a top-down view of switches which isn't what I got when looking at this. More like dots and dashes.

Maybe the scale is the problem, not proportion? It's pretty big on the page there.

Tekchip,
@Tekchip@mastodon.social avatar

@sereeena and the solution for mixed or embedded states? Still going to be ambiguous as it is now? Running a quick check on my machine both Chromium and Chrome show a solid single color lock regardless of a full SSL secured connection or a mixed one. Try it here https://www.mixedcontentexamples.com/Test/NonSecureImage Not good.

Firefox on the other hand shows will show a lock for secure and a lock with an ! for mixed and then of course proper warnings for not. There aren't just two security states.

Tekchip,
@Tekchip@mastodon.social avatar

@sereeena throwing an idea out there. Color coding? Keep the settings icon but idk use the couple million colors most of us get to use as an indicator of state? Or is that going to fly in the face of someone's tastes?

Tekchip,
@Tekchip@mastodon.social avatar

@sereeena @ligniform some of us are probably going to need it that big eventually. :KEKW: #OldPeopleThings

Tekchip,
@Tekchip@mastodon.social avatar

@sereeena so you're saying we should all run black and white displays all day? That's a pretty nonsense argument. As long as the colors convey any amount of contrast 99.9% of people will be able to derive use of it.

Tekchip,
@Tekchip@mastodon.social avatar

@sereeena Making things in color doesn't exclude color blind folks from using it. Every monitor displays color and darn near every video game comes with a color blind mode (which is more about contrast than color). Color blind mode doesn't prevent a person who isn't colorblind from using the software. Video game designers didn't decide some people are color blind so we're going to make games in black and white. I hope you can see the logical fallacy there right?

Tekchip,
@Tekchip@mastodon.social avatar

@notyetsecure @sereeena So the solution is rather than communicate to the user what's going on your browser will make a unilateral decision. "...for the latest information about when mixed images will be auto-upgraded and blocked..." Once again, poor choice-making spites the users who know what they're doing while not actually fixing the core problem of user education or in a way that informs less sophisticated users. Glad I don't have to use Chrome very often. Unfortunately, I do sometimes.

I don't think I want to do IT anymore. Not as a job at least.

The problem is I don't have a degree and I've only ever trained and been educated in IT. I've dipped my toes in real estate and it's interesting but I'm not sure if it's "new career" interesting.

The catch here is I make mid to upper 5 figures and need to maintain that level of income.

What else could I do with my life/career? To stay within IT I'd have to go into management and I'm not sure that's for me.

It's such a shame 3D Dot Game Heroes never made it off PS3 to anything else.

That seems like it would be a game perfect for Steam Deck (or any other mobile gaming TBH). Zelda-likes always feel like a good fit for that.

Apparently it doesn't emulate well at all either. https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/v3bk0z/3d_dot_game_heroes_plays_great_on_the_steam_deck/

ConsoleWitch, to random

Real question... Why haven't we needed to move to 128bit processors?

Tekchip,
@Tekchip@mastodon.social avatar

@ConsoleWitch I could totally be wrong. I'm not a processor designer. But here's how I understand it. Widening the register's biggest effect is being able to address more ram. 64bits let us address so much ram we're not even approaching how much we can physically fit in a system.

Other parts of our systems have actually moved to 128bit as needed already.

It's the internet, so if I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me.

Tekchip,
@Tekchip@mastodon.social avatar

@ConsoleWitch Per PC Mag 64bits can address 18 quntillion bytes of ram. https://www.pcmag.com/encyclopedia/term/128-bit-computing

Per Bing GPT math that's 16.384 exabytes of ram.

Perhaps someone else would find this useful.

Setting up Nextcloud on Proxmox via the OVA image. https://download.nextcloud.com/aio-vm/

Used the instructions here https://www.itsfullofstars.de/2019/07/import-ova-as-proxmox-vm/ which work great until...

Everything went smoothly until booting and getting stuck on "Booting from hard disk".

The solution was adding an UEFI disk and setting bios to UEFI.

Hopefully that helps someone else.

    About time for a fresh OS install, and I'm trying to decide what Linux distro to use. I want it to be as reliable and easy as possible, because I'm a lazy lightweight nerd. :) I've been on Debian Mint for a while, and might go back to an Ubuntu base, because I've had some trouble with software compatibility on Debian.

    @cameron I've had good luck with Pop_OS.
