Apparently I just love old technology. I replaced my five year old broken Kobo Clara, with a 13 year old 3rd generation Kindle Keyboard. I'm no fan of Amazon, but I just download and transfer library books via USB, and use Calibre as needed to convert epubs. So I think it's fine.

Now I just need to find a sweet case for it.

Fountain pen update:
I got three Jinhao 82s, and I really like them. They feel nice, look cute and write smoothly. Pretty solid for a super cheap pen.

Giles thinks we need more options for independent online publishing than
WordPress, and they should be extremely simple to use.

cameron,

@kev
I totally agree! I have tried a ton of the static site generators and had trouble with dependencies (though I know many people have no trouble) for all of them except Zola, which is what I use now. I wish I could find a self hosted equivalent of blot.im, because the simplicity of that system is lovely. Publii may be the best easy to use static site builder I know of that I'd consider newbie-friendly.

I don't have a birdsite account, but I used to just pop in and check the latest tweets from a couple of accounts. Looks like those days are over. Hooray for blogs and RSS!

Informal poll:
How did you find out about Penfount? (Or, what social media were you using for fountain pen content before you found Penfount?)

For other (e.g. Instagram, Facebook, web search), reply below.

cameron,

@penfount
I've been on Mastodon for a few years, but only recently discovered there was a fountain pen community here. Yay!

of the day:
What attracted you to fountain pens, and why or how have they kept your interest?

cameron,

@penfount
They are so aesthetic and satisfying to use, and they let me hold less tension in my hand as I write. I find journaling and planning on paper very grounding and centering. I tried a fountain pen as an impulse several years ago, and now can't imagine ever not using them.

Microsoft wants to stream your OS to you. Ignoring the whole "Microsoft" angle on this, I personally hate this idea. I miss the days when a computer was a standalone device that COULD connect to the Internet, but didn't have to. These days, so many things DEPEND on having that connection, and just flat out won't work without it. Maybe I'm a stodgy old guy, but can't we go back? I want my computer to with exactly the same online or offline.

cameron,

That's insane. Things like this just make my happier every day I switched to Linux years ago and I'm thrilled to stay with Linux indefinitely.

I'm deep in the pondering and research stage about which paper planner to get for next year. Probably going to go with the Common Planner. Must be friendly, of course. It's a very serious decision. 😆

Instagram blocked the hashtag not long ago, and Twitter too.

Don't forget that 😉

cameron,

Actually I just was able to see #joinpixelfed on Instagram. I added it to a picture of my dog. We'll see what happens.

Offpunk is pretty great! It's for reading and downloading Gemini capsules offline I'm figuring out how it works, and am quite happy.

Solarized light is my most available go to, but really like muted colors, tans, olive, that sort of thing. High contrast hurts my eyes.

cameron,

@RL_Dane
I'm 42. I just have always had eyes that are sensitive to bright colors and bright lights.

About time for a fresh OS install, and I'm trying to decide what Linux distro to use. I want it to be as reliable and easy as possible, because I'm a lazy lightweight nerd. :) I've been on Debian Mint for a while, and might go back to an Ubuntu base, because I've had some trouble with software compatibility on Debian.

cameron,

@Tekchip
Same here! That's kind of my default these days if I don't have a better idea I want to try.

Florida is getting real scary real fast. They will now allow death penalty sentences with an 8-4 jury vote instead of unanimous, they’ve passed a bill to make sex crimes against children punishable by death, and they’re working to make being trans near children a sex crime. For all the “it could never happen here” folks, we’re inching closer to state sanctioned mass murder all the time.
