Just bailed from Twitter as I don’t understand what’s happening there. This feels like starting at a new school and I hope I can make friends and that there aren’t big kids intending to flush my head down the toilet 😬

You shouldn't regularly be getting ink on your fingers. Is it happening when you write or when you are filling the pen?

Steveg58,
@Steveg58@aus.social avatar

@DrMutley @wpgne
Okay, dip pens are a different thing. 😆
Possibly you might be touching inky parts of the ink bottle with parts of the pen you will later handle. It happens even when filling fountain pens. 😎
I have a few pens that get ink on my fingers and it is usually associated with leakage and slip-on caps. I mostly don't use those pens.
Do you know how to subscribe to hashtags yet?
Also it is considered polite to camel case multi word hashtags: FountainPens. This lets people who depend on screen readers hear both words correctly rather than however the mashup sounds.
Enjoy.

@DrMutley @wpgne
Camel case is an ex programming term used when you stick words together but each new word has its initial letter capitalised: https://www.wordnik.com/words/camel%20case
The capital letter signals to the screen reader to start a new word rather than trying to pronounce everything together.

    Depressing to discover that under the latest MacOS, even after forcing the re-indexing of the contents of my entire hard drive, I can find dozens of examples of plain text files containing particular words that don’t show up in Spotlight searches for files containing those words.

    grep is your friend!

    @gregeganSF
    Yes, it is just that I have never found an built in indexer that is a fast and as thorough as grep. Indexers seem to be for people who don't have grep and don't understand how they should work and I don't understand how they can be written so badly. :(

    The problem is people won't quit twitter (a lot of my friends are still on there with weak excuses why) and reddit users will come back because most people generally won't do short term pain for longterm gain. It's just not how humans are wired and it's painful to watch. I hope I'm proved wrong.

    Instant Brands, owner of the Instant Pot, has filed for bankruptcy. The Takeout has a theory about why the set-it-and-forget-it kitchen gadget got into financial hot water. Are you an Instant Pot fan or do you think it was just a flash in the pan?

    I have a couple of decades of using stove top and another brand electric pressure cooker. I moved to Instant Pot only a couple of months ago. The definitely have some design flaws compared to other brands and the control interface seems overcomplicated. But the stainless steel inner pot is a definite plus and they do work well. Also picked up a 3 litre cooker because that is just right for 2 people.

    The yoghurt setting is really useful if you are doing that. I have used it on my old electric PC. But pre-programmed meals? What, WHY??

    Be careful driving over spinifex in off-road vehicles.

    At least 2 WA police vehicles burnt while I was contracting to WA police back in the early 2000s from drivers stopping vehicles on top of spinifex clumps going of to chase someone. Strong warnings were issued!

    @rivetgeek
    Playbooks are absolutely classes. They are the game designer dictating what characters can be used with the game.

    Steveg58,
    @Steveg58@aus.social avatar

    @rivetgeek
    Eh? Play books ARE the game mechanics and restrict the players options far more than most modern class systems do. Sure if you want to phrase it as "interfaces with the fiction" that is valid but it is such a restricted and simplified interface. Any of GURPS, early version Champions or Runequest provide a much richer interfaces with far more player control. You can play GURPS in exactly PbtA style and players have a mini-game of building their own playbooks.

    Steveg58,
    @Steveg58@aus.social avatar

    @rivetgeek
    Yeah, one of each playbook was always weird but I understand it origins and in small games it sometimes makes sense.
    I have BitD and I have tried to see if it could be modified to be more general purpose and I am here to tell you that from my point of view they are classes as each playbook enforces a particular style and point of view.

    TIL: lace cards

    It’s a computer punch card with every possible spot punched out, so what remains is a flimsy filamentous net of paper that instantly tears and jams up the card reader.

    Old-school denial of service attack.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lace_card

    Steveg58,
    @Steveg58@aus.social avatar

    @debcha
    Not much of a DoS. Card decks often jammed and re-creating a mangled card took way longer than spotting and chucking a lace card would take. The worst cards were supply system cards that were not just standard letters and numbers. Blocks of punch positions had special meanings so you couldn't correct a garbled duplication by simple inspection.
