The Python 3 version of ypkg, the current build tool in Solus, has landed in Unstable for wider testing!

While it may not mean much for the average user, this is a significant milestone for the team, bringing us one big step close to ditching Python 2 for good. This is our first tool to be used in production using Python 3.

Heya folks! This week, @kde 6 comes to the Solus stable repository, available for everyone to use! To help ensure that the updates go as smooth as possible, Plasma users should ensure that their system does not go to sleep while updates are being applied. The system should also be rebooted after applying these updates.

For those who may be curious, our version of xz has been downgraded to a non-vulnerable version today to address CVE-2024-3094, which went out with today's sync.

Over the past few days, great progress has been made in porting our package tooling from Python 2 to Python 3! Every little bit brings us closer to not having any reliance on Python 2, and puts us in a better place for the eventual transition to .

Here are the highlights:

  • Fixed a huge lzma compression speed regression
  • Ported back to iksemel from lxml due to performance regressions
  • Fixed dependency graph resolution regressions

Massive work done by Reilly on upgrading our @kde to 5.27.4. It just landed in the unstable repo! Joey is working to bring you KDE Gears 23.04, with both arriving to a system near you during our next sync.🥳 - Josh

Heya folks, due to an update issue that was not caught before sync that can result in a broken package manager, we're temporarily blocking updates from being downloaded from the Stable repository. While this issue is being addressed, updates will not be able to be downloaded, nor will new packages be able to be installed if you are using the Stable repository.

We apologize for the inconvenience, and will update you as soon as we have more information.

We are currently testing a solution to reverting the /bin and /sbin merge. Initial results are promising, but additional testing is needed, and the situation will be re-evaluated tomorrow morning.

If you are on the Unstable repository, please head on over to our Packaging Matrix channel if you would like to help test: https://matrix.to/#/#solus-packaging:matrix.org

Thanks!

Breaking news! Access to the stable repository has been restored! Steps have been taken to ensure that upgrading is once again safe.

If you updated previously, and now your system is broken, you will have to follow the steps in the Boot Rescue article in the Help Center to chroot into your system to fix it. Please see this post on the forum for more information: https://discuss.getsol.us/d/10599-temporary-blocking-of-updates/13

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this event.

Heya folks, the stable repository is once again unblocked; we believe we now have a path forward.

If you still experience issues while updating, such as if an earlier update broke your system, please see this post: https://discuss.getsol.us/d/10599-temporary-blocking-of-updates/36

Note: As a result of the fixes, eopkg check will fail on a bunch of packages. This is because of the symbolic links for /bin, /sbin, and /lib, and does not actually indicate a problem. This will be addressed at a later time.

I got tickled by @Solus a few days ago when i stumbled across their prompt postings on resolving issues with the latest update so i now have it running on two devices so i can try it out and see how i like it.

Seems hibernation does not work on the laptop even though i chose to enable swap with hibernation at install but thats about it so far.

Besides that first impressions are positive, they seem to have a great community filled with friendly and helpful users, and even some devs seem to be active on their forums. Also their help docs seem good. One thing i really appreciated was how easy it was to find all the packages and other resources since everything is on github. They also seem to have done a lot of restructuring since the kerfuffle.

Solus,
@Solus@fosstodon.org avatar

@pjol We're glad to hear that you're having a pretty good experience so far! Our community is full of wonderful people, and we are very grateful for them.

It may be worth creating a discussion on our forum about the hibernation, though getting hibernation working is pretty hit-or-miss.

There has been a lot of restructuring, indeed! We hope you decide to stick around! 😀

Note for packagers:

The xml files used to handle package (un)deprecations have been moved (finally!) from solus-sc to the packages monorepo.

When creating a package (un)deprecation request a PR only has to be created in the monorepo now. Otherwise, the process is the same.

Updated documentation at: https://help.getsol.us/docs/packaging/procedures/release-processes#package-deprecation
