You can create threads on Mastodon using the traditional method:

  1. Post first part of thread
  2. Reply to first part with second part
  3. Reply to second part with third etc

Some third-party apps and services also have thread creation tools.

It's a good idea to number threads so that people who notice one part will explore the rest.

Also, set first post to "public" visibility but replies to "unlisted", to avoid filling public timelines.

Lots more info on threads at https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-post-a-thread-on-mastodon/

I reply to each post - i.e. post 3 is a reply to post 2 - and in the Mastodon web interface clicking on the first post opens up the whole thread.

Ok, I get that they're angry, but it's definitely NOT the case that no-one of the MAUI team cares. MS has left them under-staffed (cos that's the big corp's thing these days - lay off as many as you can), but there are def people in the team who care very much about trying to do their best. Let's not demonise them - the issue is with MS, not the MAUI team.

@bitbonk
re: previous post. I had a Mastodon post of that linked comment via the programming.dev bot, that I wanted to boost to dotnet(MAUI) people here, but the dotnet bot wouldn't let me due to being a boost in itself. I know it's a bit of an edge case, but maybe we can fine-tune the bot rules a bit?

SmartmanApps,
@SmartmanApps@dotnet.social avatar

@bitbonk
Well, that's the thing - that IS the link. It was boosted by @ community_request@ programming.dev (remove spaces to see it) and if you go to that bot you can see the plain text Mastodon post I got in my feed (seen here in screenshot), and yet when I copy the link to that post, it actually takes you straight to my comment at programming.dev! I don't know then how to get a link or to boost the Mastodon post of it rather than the Lemmy comment. The Fediverse huh? 😕

SmartmanApps,
@SmartmanApps@dotnet.social avatar

@bitbonk
I'm guessing what I need to do is just screenshot it and post that

SmartmanApps,
@SmartmanApps@dotnet.social avatar

@bitbonk
So the dotnet bot knows that my post I wanted to boost is a Lemmy reply to a Lemmy reply? Is that what you're saying? Oh! Well, those posts would appear here as well wouldn't they, having been also boosted by the programming.dev bot. Yeah, that makes it tricky to boost my own Lemmy reply to my Mastodon followers then doesn't it.

SmartmanApps,
@SmartmanApps@dotnet.social avatar

@bitbonk
So yeah, that means I can't boost anything that has been boosted here by the programming.dev bot, even original Lemmy posts, so back to square 1 - are we able to fine tune that a bit? I can see where you're coming from about preventing spamming, but this is clearly not spamming. 🙂

SmartmanApps,
@SmartmanApps@dotnet.social avatar

@bitbonk
Ok, but I wanted to boost the reply too (which was a reply of mine to someone else's reply to my original post). I remember now I didn't try to boost the original post because I didn't think to follow that bot until after I'd already made the original post, so even though I couldn't see the boosted post the bot would've already done so (and again, when I click on "see original" it takes me to the Lemmy post, not the Mastodon post of the Lemmy post). I guess it's screenshots...

So, I remember a while ago seeing a list of services that support signing in with your #Mastodon account such as #pixelfed but having trouble finding that again (I'm sure there was more than just pixelfed) - anyone know where such a list is? @feditips ?
https://pixelfed.blog/p/2023/feature/introducing-sign-in-with-mastodon-streamlining-sign-up-and-login-on-pixelfed

SmartmanApps,
@SmartmanApps@dotnet.social avatar

@feditips
Right, but who else supports that? I'm sure I saw a list of other services that did the same thing.

SmartmanApps,
@SmartmanApps@dotnet.social avatar

@william_1844 @feditips
Yeah, so the reason I ask is because I saw a thing even longer ago (I think from Feditips?) about how you can get for example #Lemmy posts in your Mastodon account, but if you go to Lemmy itself then you have a more appropriate front-end, where in this case you would have a better threading experience, etc., so I was wondering which of them also support this pixelfed feature.

SmartmanApps,
@SmartmanApps@dotnet.social avatar

@feditips @william_1844
Yeah, that was from this end, but then the article says that if you go to the other end you have the more appropiate UI for interacting with the content (in the case of Lemmy it's threading, in the case of peertube it'd be the various play controls, etc.), but also, I think(?) you can receive your Mastodon content there, in your feed there.

SmartmanApps,
@SmartmanApps@dotnet.social avatar

@feditips @william_1844
So for example, first screenshot is what I see boosted to my Mastodon feed from following a Kbin magazine, and in the post if I click on the link it takes me to the original post (but separate login needed, but pixelfed supports using your Mastodon account, once you have gone through the set-up for that).

@feditips @william_1844
P.S. I also get all the text in my Maston feed, but clicking on that gives me the link to click on for the original content.

SmartmanApps,
@SmartmanApps@dotnet.social avatar

@feditips @william_1844
Hey @phocks I think you're on pixelfed too? Have you tried this thing with using your Mastodon account to sign-in to pixelfed?

Before I say what it is, I am NOT posting this as clickbait (which is how it's often used)! 😂 I'm posting this as a Maths teacher who knows this topic inside-out and wants to help people to understand it better. There are MANY mistakes that people make and get the wrong answer, and I'm going to cover them in bite-size chunks each week for a few weeks

So 8÷2(1+3)=? What is the answer (bonus: and WHY is it the answer)?

"You are saying that in the first case the 2 "binds to" the bracketed term"

No, I'm saying that the 2 is PART OF the bracketed term - a term that includes brackets. Terms are separated by operators, and there is no operator separating them
2*(1+2)=2*3 (2 terms multiplied)
2(1+2)=6 (1 term, no multiplication)
See https://dotnet.social/@SmartmanApps/110846452267056791

"division and multiplication must be evaluated left to right"
No. See https://dotnet.social/@SmartmanApps/110965810374299599

"disagrees with you" - textbooks. You mean disagrees with textbooks.

"I know you have your approach, and your conventions" - I have textbooks, with rules.

"Do you mean 1/(ab) or (1/a)b ?" - did you say "1 divided by ab" or "1 divided by a multiplied by b"?

"It's ambiguous" - read my thread and you'll find #MathsIsNeverAmbiguous In particular read the part about Lennes - he was saying the same thing as you in 1917, but Cajori was quite specific about it in 1928.

https://www.mathematics-monster.com/lessons/how_to_divide_terms_in_algebra.html talking about dividing 4a²÷2a (out of view of the screenshot it then explains that the answer is 2a, which is clearly not 4a³).

SmartmanApps,
@SmartmanApps@dotnet.social avatar

@ColinTheMathmo @ingwar
"You have your dated textbooks" - current textbooks actually.

"universities, teaching incoming students", but NOT teaching order of operations. That is taught in High School. I actually teach this topic.

"frustrated by what you're saying" - textbooks are saying (and have been for at least 100 years).

SmartmanApps,
@SmartmanApps@dotnet.social avatar

@ColinTheMathmo @ingwar
"students get it wrong", "students are so confused" - the teachers mark the students, and they (high school students) get it right - it's adults who get it wrong. My thread is for adults.

" I think there is nothing further to be gained from this exchange" - not while you keep pretending it's just me and not all textbooks. If you wanted a scholarly discussion on the topic then why all the ad hominems and appeals to authority?

SmartmanApps,
@SmartmanApps@dotnet.social avatar

@ColinTheMathmo @ingwar
"I'm not an expert" - correct. High School Maths textbooks and teachers are. This is what we all teach - it's in the syllabus.

"invite them to interact with you directly should they choose" - well tell them to read my thread first and tell me where they think it's wrong, and provide textbooks that support their assertion that it's wrong. That's how debate works.
