Natalie Elphicke has reportedly apologised for maligning the victims of sexual assault at the hands of her ex-husband.

I say reportedly, as this has only come 4 years after Charlie Elphicke's conviction, and after Labour MPs expressed concern about her being welcomed as a defector from the Conservatives.

Amongst those who had issues with Elphicke's defection, was Jess Philips, the former Shadow Minister for Domestic Violence and Safeguarding.

ShredderLivesOn,
@ShredderLivesOn@mastodon.scot avatar

In an interview with Sky News, Philips described Elphicke being admitted to Labour as having felt like "a bit like being punched in the gut", and stated that she was not happy when she learned of the defection due to Elphicke's history of victim blaming.

Philips also said she felt that the Labour leadership should have handled that issue with a lot more sensitivity before making the news of any defection public. As it angered a large number on the Labour benches.

@ShredderLivesOn@mastodon.scot avatar

Of Elphicke's apparent apology, she described it as "an absolute start, but is also a bare minimum".

Going further, Philips said;
"I'm going to give her a chance to talk to me personally. There is a part of that statement about abuse and harm that he caused to her as well.

ShredderLivesOn,
@ShredderLivesOn@mastodon.scot avatar

"I'm not saying that to excuse her. I am saying that because I think that she provides us with a lesson of how we could actually prevent this going forward and have some sort of cultural shift. So I don't excuse her and I will give her, like I would with any woman, I will give her a fair chance."

I could go on again about the long list of groups that Natalie Elphicke would owe apologies to, if she was to be accepted into a traditional Labour Party.

Natalie Elphicke is still at the end of the day a right-wing Tory, and a BoJo the Clown supporter.
That was obvious when she in her statement defecting, described Rishi Sunak as being involved a coup against the former Crime Minister.

Again I would also remind people that Natalie Elphicke was more far-right and extreme than Suella Braverman.

ShredderLivesOn,
@ShredderLivesOn@mastodon.scot avatar

Suella Braverman said it was her dream to see people being put on planes and deported to Rwanda.
Natalie Elphicke has been on panel debate shows, where she has panned Braverman for not going far enough.

It might actually be a good thing that she's stepping down at the election, as I can't imagine Keir Starmer trying to reach minority voters with someone that deranged on the topics of immigration and asylum on his team.

ShredderLivesOn,
@ShredderLivesOn@mastodon.scot avatar

Mish Rahman who is on Labour's NEC has called for the whip to be suspended from Elphicke over her past comments on sexual assault, and condemned the defence of her by Anneliese Dodds the Shadow Women's and Equalities Minister.

Dodds has also defended Elphicke when asked why someone who venerated BoJo the Clown, and denigrated the campaigning of Marcus Rashford was accepted to Labour, while Jamie Driscoll the former Mayor of North of Tyne was forced out for sharing a stage with Ken Loach.

ShredderLivesOn,
@ShredderLivesOn@mastodon.scot avatar

Rahman meanwhile wrote the following to Twitter regarding the defection of Elphicke.

"Anti migrant, anti Labour, Tory MP delivers Tory leaflets on Tuesday
crosses the floor and becomes a Labour MP on Wednesday under Keir Starmer.
Fast track to being a Labour MP via the far right fringe of the Conservative Party
Elphicke and Starmer have zero integrity"

ShredderLivesOn,
@ShredderLivesOn@mastodon.scot avatar

Peter Mandelson meanwhile who has apparently returned to work with the Labour Party, recently described the Greens as "a dustbin for Labour members who are unhappy with the direction of the Labour Party".

Funnily enough, I think that I would much prefer to support that dustbin that holds traditional Labour Party values, than what has become a political skip fire that welcomes far-right Tory MPs.

The latest defection from the Tories to Labour might be as close as we'll get to a real life version of Alan B'Stard's defection to New Labour.

Natalie Elphicke, the MP for Dover, crossed the floor yesterday to join Labour.
Although she will not re-contest her constituency at the General Election, it does go back to the point I raised when Christian Wakeford defected in 2022. Which is how far to the right does someone have to be before Keir Starmer will actually say "no"?

ShredderLivesOn,
@ShredderLivesOn@mastodon.scot avatar

Natalie Elphicke became a Tory MP in 2019, when she replaced her husband Charlie Elphicke when he stood down at the snap general election.
Although Natalie claimed that she was selected "unanimously", she was in fact the only candidate put forward.

Charlie Elphicke is a name some of you may be familiar with. He stood down due to the fact he was charged with sexual assault allegations against a member of his Parliamentary staff in 2016, and against a woman in his London home in 2007.

I wasn't surprised that George Galloway made his comments about not viewing gay relationships as normal.

What is surprising is the fact Aaron Bastani, who calls himself a journalist, actually was. And that until he heard these remarks, he would have voted for Galloway.

Anyone who has paid any attention to Galloway at all in even just the last five years would know how much of a poisonous lurch to the right he's taken.

https://novaramedia.com/2024/05/01/i-would-have-voted-for-george-galloway-but-then-he-said-gay-people-arent-normal/

ShredderLivesOn,
@ShredderLivesOn@mastodon.scot avatar

In 2021 Galloway came out as a supporter of the dawn raids that were being conducted by the Home Office as part of the "hostile environment".

When the people of Glasgow mobbed around these vans to prevent the raids, Galloway took to Twitter to blame the SNP, and insist that the raids should continue.

So much for his position of not attacking or othering human beings, that Bastani brings up from Galloway's book 20 years ago.

ShredderLivesOn,
@ShredderLivesOn@mastodon.scot avatar

Galloway has also not only endorsed, but stood with politicians on the far-right.

He previously endorsed Nigel Farage and the Brexit Party at elections.
He shared a platform with UKIP founder Alan Sked. The same Alan Sked who was praised by Enoch Powell.

And in elections in Scotland, Galloway's deputy in Alliance for Unity was a man named Jamie Blackett. A land-owning, fox hunting, Old Etonian who owns an estate on the Solway Firth.
Galloway represents the "Workers Party"...

ShredderLivesOn,
@ShredderLivesOn@mastodon.scot avatar

Galloway and Blackett meanwhile had promised to prop up the Tories in the Scottish Parliament, just to keep the SNP out.

The "Workers Party" may not have promised a deal with the Tories. But they share some ideology.
In the Rochdale by-election he ran on a resolutely anti-green ticket. The "Workers Party" say that they're against "apocalyptic green hysteria that floods our media", that they would "keep an open mind on climate change", but "would not be rushed into a green economy."

ShredderLivesOn,
@ShredderLivesOn@mastodon.scot avatar

Just a reminder. Novara Media regularly reports on the climate crisis, but according to Bastani this anti-green rhetoric was unknown to him. When the Rochdale by-election was less than three months before he conducted his interview with Galloway.

ShredderLivesOn,
@ShredderLivesOn@mastodon.scot avatar

While Galloway may share a position that the Palestinians deserve to live free from tyranny, I would question if Aaron Bastani and Novara Media have bought into some of his wilder conspiracy theories, and support for international despots like Bassar Al Assad in Syria.

Galloway claimed that the sarin gas attacks in Syria were not by Assad's regime. But in fact had been carried out by Al Qaeda. And that the gas had been supplied to them by Israel.
He also claims Israel funds and supports ISIS.

ShredderLivesOn,
@ShredderLivesOn@mastodon.scot avatar

Sorry about the short pause between posts. I had to set up the shop for work.

As for Galloway's thoughts on homosexuals, he made that clear during Pride Month of 2021 when he took issue with a gay couple being in the radio drama The Archers.

ShredderLivesOn,
@ShredderLivesOn@mastodon.scot avatar

Galloway posted to Twitter, "When did The Archers go "woke"? I listened this morning hoping for some agricultural tips only to find the storylines a festival of wokery. Gay couples, a bi-sexual not in need of their counsel, an anti-plastics campaign topped up with a bout of alcoholism. Is nothing sacred?"

ShredderLivesOn,
@ShredderLivesOn@mastodon.scot avatar

Now I'm not even a fan of The Archers, but I know that the gay couple in question have been characters in it since at least 2003. Namely because their existence has pissed off gammon like him, and made national headlines.

These included the first gay kiss on UK radio in 2003, and the first gay couple to get married in a soap opera with a civil partnership first in 2006, and then a full wedding once equal marriage was passed in England and Wales in 2015.

ShredderLivesOn,
@ShredderLivesOn@mastodon.scot avatar

If Galloway, who admittedly does own a small plot of agricultural land was seriously looking for "agricultural tips", when was the last time he actually tuned in to the show? 1985?

But if I was aware of this attitude of his to gay representation in the media, then how was a journalist like Aaron Bastani taken by surprise that he would say that he doesn't think gay relationships are normal?

No doubt the writs from Galloway to media outlets reporting his homophobia will be arriving soon.

ShredderLivesOn,
@ShredderLivesOn@mastodon.scot avatar

@simon_brooke I've referred to many MPs by their last name. And yes, I would do so if their name was the same as a region or town.

Although admittedly if there were a Tory, Reform, or UKIP candidate named Kent, I might deliberately post with a typo.

Some news I missed from the London Mayoral election.

Count Binface yelled "Down with fascism, up with Ceefax!" when he found out that he had beaten Nick Scanlon of Britain First.
GIVE THAT MAN A JOB, SADIQ!

Susan Hall stood behind Sadiq Khan during his speech glaring at him like that meme of The Undertaker and AJ Styles.
Given she loves Enoch Powell, one can only imagine what she was thinking about doing.

ShredderLivesOn, to random
@ShredderLivesOn@mastodon.scot avatar

I'm half-expecting Susan Hall to go full mask-off racist now that she's lost the London Mayoral election.

As a candidate she liked posts praising Enoch Powell and Stephen Yaxley-Lennon.
She supported Donald Trump and was a believer in 'the big lie' about the 2020 election.
She supported 30p Lee Anderson when he made the statements about Sadiq Khan handing control of London to "his Islamist mates".
She said Jews should be afraid of Sadiq Khan.

Congratulations to Count Binface, who beat both Nick Scanlon of Britain First, and lunatic grifter Brian Rose in the London Mayoral ballot.

Perhaps Sadiq Khan can find a position for him in his administration?
