ScriptJoy,

@ColinTheMathmo Yes! I was determined not to use a hint. Alas...

On this day in 1916, the first family planning clinic in the USA opened. Sisters Margaret Sanger and Ethel Byrne, and artist Fania Mindell opened a clinic which supplied barrier contraceptives and provided information about how to prevent pregnancy.

Just nine days later, the clinic was raided by police and all three women were arrested.

ScriptJoy,

@vagina_museum This is the first of the thread I read, and genuinely thought this had just happened in the US.

Some astronomers claim to have found a spherical bubble of higher galaxy density that's 500 million light years across. They called it Ho’oleilana.

It's not extremely convincing by eye. Yes I see it when someone draws a circle over it, but I'm very good at seeing patterns that aren't really there.

What matters more is statistics: they claim that such a pattern has just a one in 3.5 million chance of showing up randomly.

And what also matters more is physics: we have good reasons to expect that the Universe is full of bubbles this big! For that, read Ethan Siegel:

https://bigthink.com/starts-with-a-bang/astronomers-bounce-in-universe/

Briefly, the idea is that in the very early Universe matter starts to lump up due to gravity, with small fluctuations in density amplifying as matter falls in... but then infalling matter bounces back due to its higher pressure. You see, this is back when the gas in the Universe was so dense that pressure waves - sound waves! - were possible.

When infalling matter bounces back and forms a "bubble", the bubble will later spread out and get big as the Universe expands. And we expect that these bubbles are about 500 million light years across now.

They're called "baryon acoustic oscillations". But this is the first time anyone may have actually seen one!

The paper is full of nice pictures:

• Brent Tully, Cullan Howlett, and Daniel Pomarède, Ho’oleilana: an individual baryon acoustic oscillation?, The Astrophysical Journal, 954:169 (2023 September 10). Available at https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/1538-4357/aceaf3/pdf

ScriptJoy,

@johncarlosbaez I actually like that the circle is very brief. It’s just noticeable to indicate the underlying structure and allows me to see the detail.

Why do I have the phrase "optimised everyday carry" in my head?
Where did I hear it?
What does it MEAN???

ScriptJoy,

@christianp I’ve come across it on YouTube with people, mostly men(?), showing what they carry in their pockets and bags everyday. So like a really nice wallet that has a credit card-sized piece of plastic that holds a mini screw driver.

ScriptJoy,

@christianp no, nor mine! 🤣 An example: https://youtu.be/Zjt8xJaKqYY?si=bLT_sgQfj5m_-eOt Do people really live like this?

I still think about the one time I saw Ursula LeGuin in person, at the San Francisco Public Library. An audience member enthusiastically told LeGuin that she was really into the idea of elder women's wisdom, and said LeGuin was "her crone." LeGuin frowned. "I don't like that," she replied. "I'm not your crone. I'm not anybody's crone."

ScriptJoy,

@annaleen My immediate thought, “Imagine telling Atwood that!”

Currently watching the Time Team where geophys get REALLY excited about finding a lost Roman villa...

...until Mick points what they've found is a football pitch.

ScriptJoy,

@garius God I miss this programme. I always just wanted to stand around with them jingling the change in my pocket.

On the ferry to the Netherlands 🇳🇱!

ScriptJoy,

@christianp apart from having chocolate for breakfast, it’s the texture of those multiple little crunches that do it for me.

“Absolutely,” Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene replied. “President Trump should be expunged.”

According to the Collins Dictionary, “If you expunge something, you get rid of it completely, because it causes problems or bad feelings.”

@Free_Press And the woman doesn’t like being called dumb.

It still blows my mind that the last “Bovril Boats” didn’t stop operating in the Thames until 1998. 1998 ! Their job was to take Lordon’s sewage down the Thames from Beckton and to dump it into the North Sea (but oh, on the ebb tide, so that was ok). Dumping anything in the ocean is an admission that our systems on land have failed, but in this case it was failure by design. We cannot continue to treat the ocean like this.

ScriptJoy,

@helenczerski Bovril Boats. 🤮
