We heard all the rumors about a wild flamingo spotted on Cape Cod for the first time ever.. well we saw one in , too!! It was wiggly, waggy, and squealed when we offered it cheese! Nature is beautiful

We named this flamingo Cherry Bomb and you can adopt her from the Northeast Animal Shelter! Her fee is waived through Sunday, June 9!

NEW: Nearly 40 pups from #Texas are recovering from their long journey to #Massachusetts as we get set for our next fee-waived adoptathon! The dogs arrived in #Bedford last weekend and were immediately brought to the Northeast Animal Shelter to serve out their quarantine and get checked out 1/

This is our first transport with Operation Kindness, a shelter in Carrolton, Texas that takes in and rehomes #pets surrendered by their owners while also acting as a so-called way-station for more than 100 partners in #Texas, #Oklahoma, and #Louisiana 2/

The Operation Kindness dogs range in age from two-months to three-years-old. They are a variety of breeds and sizes, including , mixes, Hound mixes, and mixes. They’re also the inspiration behind our next fee-waived adoptathon for –called Texas Home ‘Em! 3/

Beginning Monday in and Tuesday in our , , and shelters, adoption fees will be waived for all dogs aged 1 and up that weigh at least 40 pounds, because everything is bigger in Texas! The event runs through June 9th.

It’s the first of three special summer adoption events we’re holding in the coming months. Head to http://www.mspca.org/dogs for more info!

Last weekend was #NationalAnimalDisasterPreparednessDay–an important reminder to have a plan in place for #pets in case of emergencies. Be familiar with the kinds of disasters that may impact your area and talk to your vet about disaster planning. We can help! NEW: More than two dozen are now resting and recuperating at all four of our shelters following their emergency flight from Texas to yesterday afternoon. The pups had been living at a small rescue organization whose owner no longer was able to care for them 1/

MSPCAAngell,
@MSPCAAngell@mastodon.boston avatar

As a result, the dogs were suffering and it was clear they needed to be moved off the property, but finding transport partners for large #dogs is especially challenging amid the dog population crisis. Luckily, thanks to the success of our last adoption event, we had space 2/ #dogsofmastodon #rescuedogs

135 dogs were adopted during our Ready, Set, #Dog! adoptathon last week (a big thank you to everyone who adopted and shared the news)! VP Mike Keiley says holding those special adoption events has allowed us to remain in a position to help with emergencies like this.

“Unfortunately, it seems like these situations are only increasing while there are fewer organizations in a position to help, so it’s more important now than ever that we’re able to step up,” says Keiley 3/ #dogsofmastodon

MSPCAAngell,
@MSPCAAngell@mastodon.boston avatar

The dogs range in age from 12-weeks to 10-years-old and are mostly mixes of large breeds, including Pit Bulls, Labrador Retrievers, Hounds, and Catahoulas. They’ll be available for adoption following their state-mandated quarantine and after getting any medical care they need.

Stay tuned to our socials for updates on their status! Keiley estimates caring for the new arrivals will cost roughly $5,000. Those who would like to donate to help offset that cost may do so at http://www.mspca.org/donate.

MSPCAAngell, to Cats
@MSPCAAngell@mastodon.boston avatar

It’s spring and with #Easter approaching, many people are considering picking up some Easter lilies, which are lovely but pose serious health risks to #pets, especially #cats! If your kitty eats any part of a True Lily–a class that includes Tiger, Easter, Stargazer and other varieties–it could be fatal, even just the water in the vase! 1/

MSPCAAngell,
@MSPCAAngell@mastodon.boston avatar

#Dogs who eat the plants may have some gastrointestinal issues, but #cats are the only species for which these plants are fatal. The effects of lily toxicity are rapid. Within a few hours, cats will be nauseous, causing decreased appetite, drooling and vomiting 2/

#petsafety

MSPCAAngell,
@MSPCAAngell@mastodon.boston avatar

Affected #cats will eventually develop excessive thirst and urination, which often leads to dehydration. If you think your #cat has eaten a poison lily, clean their face with warm water to try to remove as much pollen as possible and get them to a veterinarian 3/

#petsafety

MSPCAAngell,

The best way to prevent lily poisoning is to keep the flowers out of your home, but we often don’t realize that a bouquet given as a gift may also have the poisonous flowers. Check out our website for more advice: https://www.mspca.org/angell_services/lily-toxicity-the-potentially-fatal-danger-to-cats/

Big news in animal welfare! The #Massachusetts State Senate today passed a measure that would ban the inhumane practice of #cat declawing–something that usually involves removing the claws and the first bone of the toes of a cat’s front feet and sometimes also the hind feet. It’s a painful process that often results in complications and behavioral issues 1/

Said Vice President of Animal Protection, Mike Keiley, "You have situations where every shelter is full with dogs and every animal control facility is stuck with dogs, as well, and they can't get them into places where they can get adopted, and that only serves to harm the dogs that are there"

UPDATE: We and our partner shelters are extending our fee-waived #GuineaPig adoptathon for an entire week, now through January 14! The decision follows the discovery of 17 little guinea pigs in a box outside our #CapeCod Adoption Center over the weekend 1/

#rescuepets

MSPCAAngell,
@MSPCAAngell@mastodon.boston avatar

We don’t know their story, but it’s clear that the family who left the guinea pigs got in over their heads and wanted to ensure they ended up somewhere safe. Given the population increase and the impact yesterday’s snow had on some shelters’ hours, we decided to extend the fee-waived adoption event 2/

NEW: We’re partnering with several animal welfare orgs to host a fee-waived adoptathon for guinea pigs this weekend–January 5 through 7! The event follows a recent surrender of 55 guinea pigs from a single home to the Animal Rescue League of Boston. We took in 20 of the pets, whose owners purchased guinea pigs from pet stores where they were incorrectly sexed, resulting in many litters 1/

NEW: Avatar may look like he recently joined on the cover of Time magazine, but this purebred ragdoll came to us last week as a stray with a broken hip. We tracked down his owners thanks to a microchip, but they were unfortunately not able to reclaim him due to their own challenging life circumstances 1/

MSPCAAngell,
@MSPCAAngell@mastodon.boston avatar

Avatar’s surgery and related care are expected to cost $5,000. Says Director Mike Keiley, “Like most welfare organizations, it’s been a long year for us. We’ve helped thousands of animals in need, which is really wonderful, but it puts a strain on our resources.” 3/
