Tell me a good book you’ve read this year that you’d recommend.

I’ll start: Crow Mary by Kathleen Grissom

Short Stories.

Love ‘em, hate ‘em, somewhere in the middle?

Years ago one of my dear friends (who is a huge bookworm) and I were talking. She told me she hated short stories. I can’t remember why or if she even told me a reason. This conversation has stuck with me, because I struggle with them- why? I have no idea. I have tried different tactics to overcome this. I am s l o w l y reading one now, but I don’t gravitate toward it (not the one pictured, but it’s one I really want to read if I can ever get there).

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

In case anyone is wondering if there is any engagement on here— this is the list of every book recommended after I asked if you’d share one book you enjoyed this year. You can scroll underneath the post to see these, but I think seeing them all together shows the true awesomeness of the people on here.

Thanks for being pretty darn great ❤️

As a reader, do you prefer when people give you random books as gifts, or do you prefer getting a gift card to a bookstore (so you can pick the book)? Just curious.

Unless I’m asked about a specific book, I prefer the bookstore card 📚

Cozy mysteries?

I’ve read & enjoyed Still Life by Louise Penny, does that count? I recently found this book, The Thursday Murder Club & it was called a ‘cozy mystery.’ Do you all have any recommendations, do you like this genre or am I’m just 100 years old?

I do not like audio books.
My focus leaves & before long, I realize I have no idea what’s going on. Also, I don’t find listening to a book near as enjoyable as reading it, something gets lost in the process.

All that to say, I’ve been listening to this one. Granted, it’s taken me 2 times of checking it out at the library. These are all true stories that cover many subjects & the endings all make you think, which I love. I highly recommend.

Even if you hate audio books 😉

Any good reads this weekend?

I’m still plugging along with David Copperfield( I haven’t made a lot of progress this week, but am sticking with it) & also reading Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann, this was on my summer list, but I didn’t get to it then. @bookstodon

What’s a book you’d like to read next year, either a newly published book in 2024 or a book that you didn’t get to this year?

I’ll start:

The Year of the Locust by Terry Hayes (2024 pub. date) & A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens (not new 😉).

2/1
#writerscoffeeclub Tell us about yourself, your published work, your WIP, or anything you think we should know about.

My current WIP is a nonfiction account of the year my dad, who had Alzheimer’s, lived with us. I started it several years ago during a brief time when I wasn’t working and made a fair amount of progress, but set aside when I began working full time. I began writing again at the beginning of this year. I’m close to finishing the first draft. I’d like to try and get it published, that being said, I have never published anything, so I’ve been researching and looking for places that accept submissions. There’s a pinned post on my homepage that tells more about me, so I won’t bore you with it here. 🙂

3 people in my bookclub really enjoy reading erotica. To each their own, it’s simply not my thing. My question, & I don’t want to come across as condescending, are there any books of this genre that are well-written? I get there will be a lot of gratuitous stuff, but is that all there is to these books? Years ago, another bookclub I was in read the 1st book in the Sleeping Beauty series by Anne Rice (she wrote these under a different name) & I couldn’t finish it, I thought it was ridiculous.

Any insight?

Dear Bookworms,

What’s the first book you’ve finished in 2024?

This is mine: Looking Glass Sound by Catriona Ward

From time to time I will read a series, but when I do, it’s not back to back. The Lonesome Dove quartet is one such series. I’ve decided to read them in chronological order, rather than the order they were written. I’ve read Dead Man’s Walk & Comanche Moon. Up next: Lonesome Dove. I’m not sure when I will start, sometime this year I think, especially since I received this beautiful edition (that I have been eyeing for sometime).

Do you read book series, if so, what’s a favorite? #books #photography #read @bookstodon

Bad book covers do such a disservice. For a pastime that exists mainly in the mind, an off-putting cover has the power to push away even the most literary of lovers. As much as I love books, when I want to buy a book, if the cover is terrible, I won’t. Books are works of art-starting with cover & ending with the story, & I want the whole, beautiful picture. 📚

Not that childhood fears are funny,
but looking back on them, well...

My big 3:
• being kidnapped (has merit, this world is nuts)
• alligators
• quicksand

I had a dog-eared book called, “Don’t Talk to Strangers” that I carried and read often, most certain I was gaining valuable insight. I have never been kidnapped, so obviously it worked. Reading to the rescue 😉

Alligators. At a young age I came across a very large lizard in my backyard, which I knew was actually a baby alligator and was going grow up and kill me. It did not .

Quicksand. I have never encountered any, ever. The idea still unnerves me a little, but I’m certain I could escape if I came upon some. I think.

Life is full of truly scary shi*t. So it’s good to know the difference of what is & what isn’t
(ie. quicksand). Do you have any that make you chuckle a bit?

The most precious book I own is not my bible, but my dad’s bible. It was his guide for living, his notebook, occasionally an address & phone book, his prayer requests, & more. The spine cracked long ago, the binding is coming apart, & pages are loose all over the place. What I’m trying to say is that it’s the most beautiful book I own & I hope my bible one day resembles his.

As we all know, used books are the best books.

What books cause a reaction in you? These are 2 that always come to mind when I think of this question.

Still Alice brought actual tears as I read the last few pages. My dad, who had Alzheimer’s, was living with us & I was really frustrated. I read this book at the perfect time, because it brought my perspective back to where it needed to be.

Hannibal made me afraid. I read this in college & I put it on the floor every night after reading, because I didn’t want it next to me while I slept. I love that!

When words on a page can produce real feelings, that is damn good writing.

My Kindle has an unmentionable amount of books, library & otherwise. Don’t judge, or do, I don’t care.

That being said, I’m getting ready to be out of town for a week. What’s the acceptable amount of physical books to bring (to have on hand in the disastrous event that my Kindle doesn’t work or is lost) ?

I’m thinking 2-3? I need choices.

Social Media Differences.

FB: I’m wishing my husband a Happy Anniversary, he’s the greatest, most…blah blah blah (Y’all live in the house, I’m pretty sure he knows).

Instagram: We are in matching outfits celebrating our 10th anniversary, which is written on a chalkboard.

Fediverse: This is my cat, his name is Steven. #fediverse

Guess what makes a good book?

Good writing & a story you’re interested in. A novel idea, I know, but in this day & age we are all but told who & what we should be reading. Don’t listen, read what & who you enjoy.

Below are a stack of books by Richard Russo, who I think is an incredible writer. You may totally disagree & that’s 100% alright with me.

We’ve talked about not finishing books, which I have no problem doing. There are some books, that I know I will give another shot at some point. This is one such book. I’m thinking I stopped b/c something else grabbed my attention or was more pressing (ie. library book, etc-which is actually a poor excuse b/c I always have library books in).

  1. Has anyone read this?
  2. Do you have a book you DNF, but came back to later on?
