@GameFromScratch You might know enough to clear it up. But do the ones with the Unity/UE logos mean they're only redeemed at their respective asset stores? I interpret it that way.

I got sprite sheets working today. When I was testing it I realized that drawing a sprite completely overwrites whatever's behind it, so I need to fix transparency tomorrow.

Unrelated, but something I realized today was that an upside of working on a 2d game rather than 3d is no quaternions 😁

@ghosttie If I had more time, I would like to do a 2D game with spritesheets rendered from 3D, like older games. I love the style, especially since you can do some crazy shaders with Blender and still have some fun toon styles if that is what you're working with.

This is very cool. I'm looking forward to see how it grows

Are you an #IndieDev planning to launch a game on #Steam this year that will support #Linux?

Be sure I'm following you! Hi! And leave a link to your game, duh :)

@LouisIngenthron did you go from C# to C#?

really wish cmake wasn't the most common project build generator for c++

JustinRyanH,
@JustinRyanH@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink, I've had to build some static libraries for some non-C projects lately, and I've thought about this. I don't have an alternative, though. Because I've run into projects where people do their own customer builder, and I find them a lot more troublesome.

Hot take. I wished academia had picked up Ruby as their language instead of python.

JustinRyanH,
@JustinRyanH@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@aeva The first obvious answer is personal bias because I enjoy programming in ruby more than python.

However, maybe more nuanced take is ruby plays better with the OOP patterns Academia likes to push on their students. Ruby's bundler was one of the first decent dependency systems that cargo and others iterated and improved on. I still feel python hasn't gotten a good story on that today.

That said the macro system would have likely been abused from academia like it is abused elsewhere.

Spun up a new SVN server. Git/LFS just doesn't cut it with large art files multiple devs can be working on. SVN has so much historical cruft.

@grumpygamer I do trunk base development anyways. You using a free service?

Grabbed an old game I made over 10y ago, and made it run in QoD engine, so it now works on Steam Deck, it’s kind fun (although I’m bias). It was an arena based bullet hell with all hand drawn + scanned assets. Was for iOS but 32-bit/SDKs Apple thingy killed it. Kinda makes me want to add more content and re-release it.

@djlink that's so fun. Did you home roll physics replace it with a library?

Erosion’s working again! Scale’s a bit off because there are steep drainage basins everywhere, but it’s once again good enough.

#gamedev #webgl

Grumpy-looking player avatar scurries through a stylized game world. There’s a bunch of desert, which transitions to a forested area further away. Several drainage basins.

JustinRyanH,
@JustinRyanH@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@jonikorpi Is the little squiggles on the landmass part the texture or is generated live in a shader?

JustinRyanH,
@JustinRyanH@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@jonikorpi That's crazy because there isn't jitter or anything. Very well done.
