You can sniff at block-based programming if you like, but I do find that students who used such languages in middle school have an easier time adapting to object oriented and nonlinear programming later — the downside is that nonlinearity is nearly always an illusion in computer science. And under those floating islands of functions and classes there is an absolute order —

I’ll work with some middle school students next year and so I’m learning about all this scratch nonsense.

@futurebird Did you mean "block based programming"?

Your typo genuinely made me think you were talking about programming teaching methods aimed at black kids.

Hey, if you like chiptunes but especially chips and tunes, my good friend Langel Bookbinder is selling a chip that plays tunes!

He calls it "a superbly portable handheld chiptune fidget synthesizer that anyone can easily operate and enjoy!"

I kind of hope this type of game becomes a "genre"!

@grimmy It's here! I love the postage stamp and your own personalised sticker. A+++ would bum 3d printed parts off you again.

Thank you so much for shipping me those parts! They work perfectly! Now I can figure out what's wrong with the connexion here and see if I can fix it. (re: https://mathstodon.xyz/@JordiGH/112367404899460879 )

This is the first time I work for a company that I actively want to personally advertise for, but I really like what #Grist does. It's like a #spreadsheet that's really a #database and lets you use #Python as a computational language. And it's all open source!

Have some links!

And have some marketing materials!

The drafts were really good too:

Hm, most of the local 3d printing shops make it a big deal to print out this single tiny clip.

They either want me to wait a whole week to get it, or they want me to pay a minimum of about 80 dollars for a single clip, or they want me to make a bulk order.

I've never 3d printed. Is it really that big of a deal to print a tiny clip that we require this much time, money, and ceremony?

https://doc.rust-lang.org/stable/book/ch10-03-lifetime-syntax.html#lifetime-annotations-in-struct-definitions

So yesterday I was asking in #rust (IRC channel, not a hashtag) and they were all acting like this is the most obvious thing ever. To me, it's not obvious why this example needs a lifetime annotation. Of course a reference in a struct should never point to nothing.

Why does the compiler need a lifetime annotation to make this explicit? Why can't this lifetime annotation be elided? I'd be curious to hear another explanation.

I guess my biggest confusion is that if the Rust language has been slowly eliding some lifetime annotations, why has it kept this one?

JordiGH,
@JordiGH@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@kornel What's rare and niche? Lifetime annotations or structs holding references?

You know that trope where...

There is some character who is presented with a challenge, a difficult situation, and someone or something tells this character, you will fail/die/get trapped/go insane/suffer a horrible fate...

"... like all the others"

?

I swear this trope is common in fiction. I can think of it in Coraline (the kids with the Other Mother), Lizard (the other lizards who came before you), the unfortunate souls Ursula has in The Little Mermaid...

I just can't find it in TVT.

Waiting for delivery on:

It's so much fun to have to wait several months for a physical #NES game to be delivered to me. I get excited thinking about what the manual will look like, what will the box art be like, if the cartridge itself will have any bells and whistles, and how will it play once I stick it into my NES.
