The Entertainment Software Association (the lobbying organization that represents video game publishers) doesn't just not care about video game preservation, but actively fights against efforts to preserve games, even games not owned by their member companies. They were at the US Library of Congress fighting a copyright exemption for out of print games to be made available by libraries.

Ugh. That's twice now that I've attempted to purchase a bunch of gift cards for prize winners from our holiday contests, and each time the company selling them has said they were "unable to authenticate and complete" the order. Given the hold on the funds from my card, the problem clearly isn't with my payment, so I've got no idea what's going on. Some sort of misplaced fraud protection flagging it solely because it's a large order of gift cards?

HeroOfDermwood,
@HeroOfDermwood@mastodon.social avatar

@liampomfret Very likely. Gift card scams are hot right now. Have been for a few years. You may just have to suffer through until you get them.

HeroOfDermwood,
@HeroOfDermwood@mastodon.social avatar

@liampomfret Glad they have identified the issue.

March is Women’s History Month.

A reminder that after no fault divorce was finally legalized in 1970, female suicide rates dropped 20%.🤯

The "strong 1950s family unit" GOP is nostalgic about ignores record high female suicide, suffocating domestic violence, & zero female financial autonomy.

Or maybe that’s the GOP’s goal.😐

Are there good alternatives to Patreon? What do people usually use for regular financial support of fans? Speaking more for my open source game development work. I mean, I don't have a problem just putting a price on things, but my goal is to share knowledge and letting people play the games without having to compile the games themselves is important to me. I just think that Patreon has too much baggage at this point to be useful.

My 8 year-old beat Symphony of the Night last night. He was having trouble with the Dracula fight and was talking about just not beating the game and instead exploring the castle. i told him that was fine. The game is cool and fun to explore. But last night he asked me if I could help him beat Dracula. So I sat down next to him. Gave him a couple of item and equipment tips. He beat him on his second try. He was so happy and excited to beat it.

Finished my new play through of Castlevania Symphony of the Night. I did an All Bosses, All Relics, Save Richter run. Did the whole thing in 2hours almost exactly (30 seconds over). Not bad at all. I did a luck mode run with a Death skip to keep all my starting gear. Got the Duplicator with the shop glitch. Got the shield rod for the Alucard Shield spell to kill all but 1 boss. Fun run.

Hey. Layoffs suck. There is no doubt about that. But there seemed to be a lack of vision at Discord. They seemed to have been in a "build as many new features as possible" mode for a while and too much staff could have been a part of that.

Hopefully the smaller staff will result in a more cohesive vision for what the service should be.

went caving with a bunch of night vision potions hoping to find a huge iron ore vein. did not find one, but did find a huge copper vein so i guess that'll be useful if i ever decide to use copper for anything :|

either way not a bad haul

@eniko Copper is an interesting addition to the game. I still don't know what to do with it.

Thought my PSP was busted. My battery swelled up recently and I have to get rid of that. Tried playing the PSP while it was plugged in to the charger, but it wouldn't turn on. So I thought that maybe the battery caused a capacitor or something to fry. Yesterday, I was thinking about it and I decided to try a different charger, just to double check. Got the one off my Move controller charger, and the PSP work! so glad the thing isn't busted.

HeroOfDermwood,
@HeroOfDermwood@mastodon.social avatar

No idea why the cheap USB charging cable I have doesn't work any more. It doesn't appear damaged, at least on the outside. Could be messed up on the inside though.

So, all I really need is a new battery and I will be good again. I use this PSP for most of my non PC gaming. So I have missed it.

Saw the news about Valve doing a DMCA on Team Fortress: Source 2.

I'll say the same thing I always say: stop putting thousands of hours into making things with someone else's IP. At some point they will nuke it, like Nintendo do all the time.

Be original, be creative.

HeroOfDermwood,
@HeroOfDermwood@mastodon.social avatar

@gamingonlinux Yeah. Same. I do wish more game companies were welcoming of fan works, but it is what it is.

Back to SOTN, my 8 year-old wanted to play it over christmas break. His siblings were playing games on the living room tv and I offered to let him play games on my bedroom tv. I asked him if he wanted to play a Vampire hunter game and he jumped at the chance. Since then he has loved it.

He has been coming to me almost daily to tell me about things he has found, bosses he fought, and all sorts of things.

Got the urge to replay Castlevania Symphony of the Night recently. Been watching speedruns and my 8 year-old wanted to play it. I decided to play it quick and do only what I needed to do to beat the game. Used some speedrun strats to bypass parts of the game and ended up beating the game in 1 hour 35 minutes recorded time. Probably spent another 30-45 minutes, maybe an hour, failing and having to reset from last saves. This is a personal best.

HeroOfDermwood,

@djlink One of many great Sci-fi shows cut short. Dark Matter was another that I wanted more of and it was killed on a massive cliff hanger.

@simon_brooke@mastodon.scot avatar

So, a question.

I'm giving NPCs a schedule of daily tasks, which go on their task queue. Generally, when a task is interrupted, for example when the player engages in conversation with the character, the task is resumed after the conversation. But that might push it past the start of the next scheduled task. I don't want a detritus of uncompleted tasks building up on the task queue.

>>>

HeroOfDermwood,
@HeroOfDermwood@mastodon.social avatar

@simon_brooke If you want to provide a list of tasks, you should have some buffer tasks in the mix that can be skipped to keep them on track for the key tasks. You should also avoid scheduling tasks at hard times closely together.

For example, if you have an NPC that has a doctor appointment in the morning, and goes to dinner with another NPC in the evening, the task in the middle should be something simple that is not time dependent, like, "Cleans their apartment".

HeroOfDermwood,
@HeroOfDermwood@mastodon.social avatar

@simon_brooke in this case, the "Cleans apartment' task can be started late, or cut short depending on if they got to their doctor appointment on time.

He first appeared as the final boss in Super Mario Land 2

He is also the main protagonist and antihero of the Wario Land and WarioWare Nintendo series. His name is a portmanteau of the name Mario and the Japanese word warui, meaning "bad"

Wario ❤️

    @ryanhoulihan Oh mygosh do I feel you on this. It is so exhausting talking to run of the mill partisans during election years. Any criticism, no matter how valid, of their candidate means you want the evil of the other party to win and destroy the world. Ugh. Give it a rest. Just nominate actual good candidates who will actually pass truly liberal policies.

    One of the rarer examples of great and thoughtful journalism from Kotaku. the video game industry is a willing part of the US' propaganda campaign against the Middle East. They are all too willing to depict the Middle East and all its people, cultures, and countries as evil terrorists with some good people sprinkled in there here and there.
