Doing my tax return today. I left as late as possible because I’m an ultra hard big man. Deal with it HMRC.

I liked that moss is starting to colonise this old brick wall on a brownfield site, there is a mini forest planted on the site now.

I don’t understand and will never understand the apathy about our climate catastrophe.

Today I saw some blackbirds when walking the dog. It occurred to me they were the first I’d seen for a while. I love seeing blackbirds.

I wonder what species going extinct will I miss the most? It’s always dogs. Today the answer was dogs.

and blackbirds. #ClimateDiary

@BroadforkForVictory
I’m convinced that more people are concerned about climate than most think (surveys show this) but we are very stuck about what can be done, plus worn down just paying bills. As someone said to me yesterday- being green is expensive.
Until people either have their needs met or green options are the easy ones, it can be very hard to make the choices they want to.
I talk about climate to people all the time & most people are concerned but feel helpless. 1/2

That’s why people around them making positive choices is so important, like your community composting and no dig plot.
It lets people imagine a different future.
I fear we are going to lose a lot of wildlife between avian flu and climate change.
But we still have time to make it less bad.
(Understand if that is not the way you are currently feeling - I’m in fight for the future mode just now after a particularly low point at the end of the year)

I think you may be right, and I wish it wasn’t so.
One thing that was shown at the start of COVID was that if people understand and are supported massive change can happen quickly.
No one needs to be perfect either, there will always be something more that any person could do, but if everyone does something that makes a big effect & becomes normal and therefore easier for everyone to do the next thing.

To me, the darker underside colour of this lichen makes it look like it’s been outlined in black pen. The subtle colour variation looks like watercolour pigment seeping out across the lichen lines. Spotted yesterday in Fife.

If I did take an extra long route home and got distracted taking photos of moss and lichen, I still think it was a good use of my time.

Garden is starting to look like spring. The first snowdrop and crocus, and there are more slightly battered primroses around.
Rhubarb leaf buds just visible, and wild garlic greens poking out of the ground (a few mm). First batch of sweet peas have started to germinate too.

Wondering about recording all the food we eat that we have grown, foraged or harvested ourselves.
I did it a couple of years ago and found it was good to see how much we did provide for ourselves & was sometimes a reminder to check the freezer.
If you’re not interested -Feel free to mute #GrownForagedHarvested as I’ll try and remember to add it each time.

Todays homegrown produce was all from our garden and all frozen last summer, except for the Shiso (perilla) leaves used for tea, dried in the autumn.

Raspberries on breakfast.

Courgettes, tomatillos, green beans & roasted tomatoes into a sauce with other shop veg.

food for today was still mostly out the freezer, but with herbs and celery leaves I remembered to pick before it got dark.

Frozen Raspberries, red and black currants in breakfast
Elderberry juice diluted for a drink with local honey (not home produced)
Redcurrant vinegar (I harvested them, friend made them into vinegar)
Added to tonight’s soup: pumpkin, tomatillos, cutting celery leaves, sage, parsley & thyme.

Here’s a video of some of the sights, penguins and her response to being at the end of the world.

Happy to have spotted the pink lichen blobs growing on the other lichen. So much going on at a small level. I think the pink lichen is stealing nutrients from the other lichen.
I really need a book that can explain lichen going ons and help with ID. And that I can refer back to.

I find it odd that people I don’t know try and call me on my mobile phone.
As if I might pick up?!?
If you are not in my contacts I’m going to assume you’re trying to sell me something or are running a scam.
Does anyone answer an unknown number on a personal mobile anymore?
Time to reinstate letters of introduction if you are trying to reach me.

A wind thrown stick which is home to a number of types of lichen.
Amazing shapes and forms, endlessly fascinating.
I imagine that as we move towards cleaner air, the lichens that have been held back by pollution will grow in more places. Gloriously bushy lichen will take hold on every stick and bush.

We went out for a walk just before the sun set this afternoon.
A bright patch of moss on a wall was lit up in the last of the sunshine. Lichens share the space but in much more muted colours.

I am following it now (again?)
