Talking about strategy, and the use of #Snikket as a flagship for #XMPP, and end-up that it's not a good idea for a bunch of reasons.

@Goffi@mastodon.social avatar

At the #XMPP summit right now. We are talking about a possible XMPP 2.0.

Goffi,
@Goffi@mastodon.social avatar

@mazhe Yes basivally that. There would be updated RFC with XEP that are now part of any modern implementation.

We've been talking about retro-compatibility, and even if there were 2 schools for that, the consensus was to keep it as much as possible, as it's an important feature for some people.

@andyy no recording, but you can join live, check the wiki: https://wiki.xmpp.org/web/Conferences/Summit_26

@andyy from there, check "remote participation", on the XMPP room you'll find the stream link.

On my way to for the summit, then .

Ping me here or on xmpp:libervia@chat.jabberfr.org?join if you want to meet.

I'll have 2 talks this week-end:

🗓️ Sat, 11:50, devroom (H.1302): Bridging Open Protocols: and Gateway via https://fosdem.org/2024/schedule/event/fosdem-2024-2857-bridging-open-protocols-xmpp-and-activitypub-gateway-via-libervia/

🗓️ Sun, 16:30, devroom (UD2.218A): How I've Built a Web Frontend for a Federated Communication Tool with https://fosdem.org/2024/schedule/event

See you there!

Goffi,
@Goffi@mastodon.social avatar

@thecoffemaker would be great. In some cases I think XSF can help, just explain your case next time. Meanwhile, you can follow the summit online: https://wiki.xmpp.org/web/Conferences/Summit_26#Remote_Participation

Polychrome, to random

#XMPP needs a client that looks and feels like MSN Messenger.

Goffi,
@Goffi@mastodon.social avatar

@Polychrome @debacle FYI, was built from the ground up with multiple frontends in mind. If you want to create your own interface, you can do so in any language/framework you like, focus on the UI/UX and let the backend handle and many other things.

I'm stabilizing the front-end API for this release to encourage third-party front-ends.

felwert, to ubuntu

Trying to set up on to help my father with a computer issue. A few years back, an account in the instant messenger client was enough, because it used a quite clever mechanism to set up a connection. What’s the best way today? GNOME now supports RDP natively, but by default it seems to only support link local connections, not over internet? Do I really need TeamViewer for this?

Goffi,
@Goffi@mastodon.social avatar

@felwert I've tried RustDesk recently, and it works quite well: https://rustdesk.com/

Once installation is done, and you have registered the machine ID, you just have to ask to click on the icon and to dictate the password.

Oh, and for the record, I'm about to implement remote desktop with as part of my current grant (https://nlnet.nl/project/Libervia-AV/).

Goffi,
@Goffi@mastodon.social avatar

@felwert there are public servers by default. You can pay or install your own if performance is not good, but it works out of the box without it.

Self hosting is IMHO for professional or very massive use cases. It should not be a concern in your use case.

With the small tries I did (for casual help as you), it's working really fine out of the box.

@Goffi@mastodon.social avatar

Hi, I haven't followed the progress for a while, which OSes are currently usable on (basic call/SMS, terminal, GPS, not crashing too much)? Is usable (in particular for )? Thanks!

Goffi,
@Goffi@mastodon.social avatar

Thanks for the answers. I've actually used mostly Manjaro with Plasma Mobile (as a long term user), but despite an appealing environment, there were some bugs, and it was not yet so usable. Unfortunately, last time I've checked, it was not looking super active on .

My main concern is to have something usable as emergency phone.

mima, to Matrix

I think at this point it's worth thinking about why we need text chats and voice/video calls integrated with each other like what (try to), , and do

Why not just go back to or something like for text, and something like for calls like the old days :sagume_think:

Goffi,
@Goffi@mastodon.social avatar

@Monal @debacle and Libervia (Web, desktop and CLI, with desktop sharing support, admittedly on dev version, soon to be released).

Goffi,
@Goffi@mastodon.social avatar

@debacle @lispi314 @mima @untsuki actually A/V calls in XMPP are not "always" e2ee as the DTLS-SRTP fingerprint is not encrypted with legacy OMEMO. It is with OMEMO:2 and Stanza Content Encryption support, or for client implementing the non-standard "hack" at https://gist.github.com/iNPUTmice/aa4fc0aeea6ce5fb0e0fe04baca842cd .

Goffi,
@Goffi@mastodon.social avatar

@debacle @lispi314 @mima @untsuki to be more clear, it is indeed "always encrypted", but with the fingerprint in clear and forgeable, MITM attack is doable relatively easily. if OMEMO:2 with SCE or Daniel's hack is used, it should be fine, but not all clients are implementing them.

Is there any XMPP<->Telephony Network transport other than JMP/Soprani.ca that allows me to make calls with Conversations (or any other modern Jingle #XMPP client)

Soprani.ca seems like a pretty convoluted stack to set up if one wanted to self host.

TBH I don’t even know enough about the problem space to formulate what I’m looking for.
I think I already have a SIP account (comes with my internet at home / but never used it) so I guess I’m just looking for a 'modern Jingle'<->SIP gateway?

Goffi,
@Goffi@mastodon.social avatar

@daniel isn't https://github.com/jitsi/jigasi what you are looking for? Never used it, but I think that it does some kind of SIP/XMPP gateway.

There is a major outage on my server, https://libervia.org, my blog at https://goffi.org , and associated services won't be accessible probably for a few days. My email service is also down, so if you need to contact me, please use XMPP at goffi@jabber.fr for now, thanks!

Server is back, still a few things missing, but the most important is there (notably code repos).

@smallcircles unrelated, it's a hardware failure.

copiepublique, to random French

Bonjour masto 👋

Rejoins l'alliance !

https://copiepublique.fr

#introduction #introductionfr #présentation #CopiePublique #RedevanceCopiePublique

Goffi,
@Goffi@mastodon.social avatar
