@baruch@batkaren Fun fact: T-Mobile (Deutsche Telekom) and DHL (Deutsche Post) were originally the German Federal Postal Service. It's crazy how huge these companies have become, since they were split and privatised.
The Framework Laptop 16 will have in-house support and installation guides for Fedora! With its AMD CPU and GPU you will be teed up for success on Linux.
It already had search (with some rough edges), but people are already making their own to fill specific needs ... chiefly it seems to replace the Google site: reddit.com search facility.
@DamienMarieAtHope I always found that theory to be overly simplistic. The athletic abilities of men and women can be seen as two bell curves that have a relatively large intersection in the middle. It’s only when you go to the edges of each respective curve, where you’ll find noticeable differences. Why would hunter gatherer societies intentionally hamstring themselves by having rigid gender norms?
@christianselig “Agressive cost cutting” like laying off 75% of your workforce and not paying your bills. I never knew that acting as if your company is insolvent was a sound business strategy. We all have our role models, I guess.
"...new services always experience 'scalloped' growth. That’s where an outside event — a positive narrative about the new service, or a catastrophe affecting the old one — drives a surge of new users.
Some...try the new service, decide it’s not worth it, and leave — but not all of them. Each event triggers a high tide of new signups, but the low tide that follows is still higher than the old ...Surge after surge, the number of users steadily builds."
@tchambers@pluralistic I’ve been on Mastodon since 2018, and there have been many waves before the most recent Twitter-tsunami. Each wave is larger than the one before and more people decide to stay. Other services also have an impact. The fact that journalists are already familiar with Mastodon and the Fediverse certainly helped when reporting on Reddit, Lemmy and kbin. Now, it’s the whole Fediverse, not just Mastodon, that has reached the limelight.
@djlink Do you think Nintendo will use those fancy new foldable screens in their next console? Then, you could even have content that spans across the whole screen, like maps, and not just on one or the other.
@mwichary It’s interesting that they still decided to create an elevated train, even though they already had one to clear. The street is wide enough to accommodate the train on ground level. In my city, Stuttgart, they would have done just that.
@mwichary PS: The new Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof (central station for high speed rail) has a similar problem, just underground. It needs to go over and under two U-Bahn (light rail) and S-Bahn (heavy rail) tunnels. It’s, therefore, built at a relatively high angle. However, if you’re actually standing there, it’s not really noticeable.
@TopKnot@AnarchoNinaWrites ChatGPT and similar "AI" are just "stochastic parrots". It is very good in simulating natural language, as it knows what words should follow other words in a specific context. However, it has no concept of meaning or correctness. The generated "facts" are statistically likely, but not necessarily true. Therefore, it shouldn't be seen as a search engine or even a calculator, because that's not what it does. It simulates language, nothing more, nothing less.
@wolf480pl@TopKnot@AnarchoNinaWrites The difference is that the human brain understands what a sentence means. You can look at a sentence, understand its meaning and check if what was written is correct. A LLM only looks at which words would fit best in a given context. It does not understand what it's saying. Therefore, the errors it makes are often along the lines of making up scientific papers it's supposed to quote or saying that a company that does not exist is supplying a given service.
Instagram explore page with #joinpixelfedorg a non-existent hashtag
Instagram explore page with #pixelfed showing posts as expected, we'd expect either of the previous images for the #joinpixelfed hashtag
@pixelfed The Fediverse is slowly gaining momentum in the mainstream media*, so a very good ActivityPub-powered Instagram alternative (that they didn't create themselves) can seem very scary for Meta executives.
The biggest public broadcaster in the world, ARD, just launched their Mastodon instance https://ard.social. The ZDF also has their own instance at https://zdf.social.
@luana@mrhamel@Mastodon As each instance is a separate service provider with different policies and regulations (depending on hosting location and nationality of the owner), I can imagine Mastodon gGmbH doesn’t want the legal trouble of automatically directing people to instances outside of their control. The curated server list and account migration is still available, but then the responsibility lies with the user.
