Literally just bought a map book for most of Australia a few weeks ago.

Planning a three week trip through the Outback. Seems crazy to try and rely on technology out there for that long without a safety net of some sort.

When I was younger, it used to be falling down a large hole, getting swallowed up by the darkness, and never knowing exactly when I’d hit the ground (or worse).

Now I have a family, my most frequent one has been losing my 9yo daughter, usually when we’re camping or at a busy shopping centre - something like that.

Are you in Melbourne? A mate of mine has an automatic one with the sun and wind detection. Happy to find out who he went through, if you struggle to locate someone.

Pretty sure it was at least a few grand or more. I can ask if you like.

Ok. It was about 6m wide and extends to 3.5m. Supplied and installed was around $3500. Khoi’s Blinds on Westall Rd, Clayton South.

Do you own or rent the property?

If you own, why not a self-supporting awning attached to the structure? Depending on the construction, etc, you might have to consider supporting on uprights attached to the ceiling joists, and cut some roof tiles for them to come through (easily weather-proofed with flashing, etc).

Something like these retractable awnings might do the trick. Not cheap, but easily done, and shouldn’t even require a permit, depending on the planning rules in your city council. I know of models that have sun and wind detection - they come out automatically when sunny, and retract automatically when too windy.

If you rent, or cost/installation is an issue, then maybe find the largest cantilever umbrella you can?

So he not only went back into the lion’s den for his hat, he’s going back yet again for his coat.

Starting to think this dickhead gets off on being called a rapist…

Honestly, that’s on Martin. He signed the deal, then failed to get off his arse and finish the damn series. HBO exercised their right to develop their own content when, after five eight years, he’d still not made any progress on finishing the series.

The fans needed something. Can you imagine the uproar if HBO told us all to wait another few years before closing out the story?

Martin can whinge all he likes about his creative process, and how he was shut out of the final seasons. I notice he hasn’t whinged once about the money he made from selling the TV rights.

Don’t get me wrong - he’s absolutely entitled to that money. It’s his creation after all. But he also signed the contract that got us to where we got to.

In terms of being able to enjoy that massive reveal behind the whole plot, The Sixth Sense.

In terms of being able to just enjoy the whole storyline without any prior knowledge, The Godfather (parts 1 and 2) or Se7en.

I don’t think other Plex accounts can select managed users under my Plex account. They can only be granted access to libraries separately.

DeltaTangoLima,
@DeltaTangoLima@reddrefuge.com avatar

The Plex app for Google Chromecast TV doesn’t let you use multiple separate Plex accounts. Also, I tried that path with the oldest and she had problems using Plex on her iPhone - it didn’t inherit the Plex Pass rights from my server, and limited playback to one minute at a time.

DeltaTangoLima,
@DeltaTangoLima@reddrefuge.com avatar

The problem there is you can’t use multiple accounts on the Plex app for Google Chromecast TV, plus we found that the iPhone app doesn’t inherit the Plex Pass rights from my server - it limited playback to a minute at a time.

DeltaTangoLima,
@DeltaTangoLima@reddrefuge.com avatar

Yeah - tried that with one of the kids and she couldn’t use her account on the Plex app on our Google Chromecast TV, and the iPhone app was limited to playback a minute at a time. I was under the impression clients inherited the Plex Pass rights of the server they were using, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.

DeltaTangoLima,
@DeltaTangoLima@reddrefuge.com avatar

Yeah, gotcha. I’m starting to think my best approach might be to:

  • Have the kids setup their own Plex accounts
  • Activate the app on their iPhones
  • Let the kids’ VLAN access the house Chromecast, so they can just cast from their phones as needed

Mullvad is great for outbound VPN, but inbound is a PITA without port forwarding (as you’ve said). I just host a Wireguard container for inbound connectivity now, and it works flawlessly.

DeltaTangoLima,
@DeltaTangoLima@reddrefuge.com avatar

Yeah, this is why I jumped ship to Immich last year. I was donating to PP, with the understanding that donating users would get access to multi-user features when they happened.

Then they put them behind a paid recurring subscription. For self-hosted users. That move broke all the trust with me.

DeltaTangoLima,
@DeltaTangoLima@reddrefuge.com avatar

This may take us down a bit of a rabbit hole but, generally speaking, it comes down to how you route traffic.

My firewall has an always-on VPN connected to Mullvad. When certain servers (that I specify) connect to the outside, I use routing rules to ensure those connections go via the VPN tunnel. Those routes are only for connectivity to outside (non-LAN) addresses.

At the same time, I host a server inside that accepts incoming Wireguard client VPN connections. Once I’m connected (with my phone) to that server, my phone appears as an internal client. So the routing rules for Mullvad don’t apply - the servers are simply responding back to a LAN address.

I hope that explains it a bit better - I’m not aware of your level of networking knowledge, so I’m trying not to over-complicate just yet.

DeltaTangoLima,
@DeltaTangoLima@reddrefuge.com avatar

You do need to be able to reach your public IP to be able to VPN back in. I have a static IP, so no real concerns there. But, even if I didn’t, I have a Python script that updates a Route53 DNS record for me in my own domain - a self-hosted dynamic DNS really.

You certainly can run Wireguard server in a docker container - the good folks over at Linuxserver have just the repo for you.

@DeltaTangoLima@reddrefuge.com avatar

Yep - they introduced paid subscription tiers and put multi-user support into those: www.photoprism.app/editions#compare

I just have a one-liner in crontab that keeps the last 7 nightly database dumps. That destination location is on one my my NASes, which rclones everything to my secondary NAS and an S3 bucket.

The problem there, as we’re already seeing, is arsehole councils taking action against people on private properties, where the people either own the property, or have the property owner’s permission, and live in tents or caravans there.

Examples:

Every layer of government has their fair share of blame to wear for this, from the snouts at the trough in the local city councils, to the fat wankers in suits in Canberra. Not one single government has done anything remotely positive to improve the future of housing in this country in the past 20 or so years.

Instead, they’ve encouraged and rewarded foreign ownership and rich landlords that own dozens of properties. Our monetary policy is tied to a broken measure of financial health, where the snake eats its own tail: higher rent contributes to higher inflation, which contributes to higher interest rates, which contributes to higher rent.

All our governments have done is create the perfect conditions for a massively bloated housing market that’s almost impossible for anyone to get into without already being in the middle-to-upper earning brackets.

Councils have to start thinking along humanitarian grounds, and enable people to live self-sufficiently, rather than punishing them for it. It’s not hard to see a future where a pensioner dies on a park bench in the middle of winter, because they couldn’t afford to rent or pay their mortgage, got permission to live in a van on someone’s rural block, and some cunt of a councilor decided a bullshit zoning law was more important than human dignity.

Something has to give.
