The motivation is non existent today. We begin our trek back to Melbourne, which will take 2 days. The train doesn’t leave until 8, but breakfast is mandatory and starts at 6. I just want to go home and sleep. The cold isn’t any better today, but it’s not any worse, hopefully it stays that way

Edit: also I couldn’t get to sleep until really late last night. My nose was really blocked and everytime I drifted off to sleep it felt like I couldn’t breathe until I woke up

I bought a litre of fresh orange juice at the Mildura farmers market yesterday. I took a swig before realising that was probably a bad idea since it still needed to spend about 8 hours in my bag. I think it’s meant to be refrigerated, and it definitely wouldn’t have been treated. But I’m already sick so I’m going to drink it and just hope it doesn’t make me worse. It tastes a lot more acidic than supermarket stuff, so that might help it not kill me, I hope. It smells fine, anyway

I had a swig of it and a chorizo and cheese sandwich and I’m starting to feel better. I think now I need a nap though

I skipped dinner last night so I could get an early night. I did manage 9.5 hours, but starting the trip off with 4ish has absolutely screwed me over. I’m still really tired ☹️

Another day of the trip done! Today was alright. We went on a river cruise from Mildura to Wentworth (a 30 minute drive), but by paddle steamer it is a 6 hour ride. I’m honestly kind of struggling, it’s feeling rather isolating being the only one under 18 and about 10 years younger than the next youngest person. I mean, although I sometimes joke about it, I’m not anti old people or anti adults. But it’s hard to try and connect with people so much older than me. It’s also shared tables on everything. Dinner, breakfast, 6 hour boat rides, everything.

It’s also a bit of a struggle since the tour was specifically designed for adults, although not adults only. Everything revolves around drinking. Every morning there’s complimentary champagne, every night before dinner there’s pre drinks that run for about an hour. If you don’t do pre drinks, you struggle to get a seat. Tomorrow we’re spending 2 hours at a wine tasting place with no alternate activity available. I know it’s not the end of the tour, but it’s kind of a buzz kill watching everybody else drink for 2 hours straight while I get to stand in the garden and look at their grapes, maybe get a can of coke if I’m lucky.

I think I’m pretty set on not wanting to do big group tours again either. I mean they’ve chosen some good activities, and doing (or at least paying for) everything is the only way to go on the train, which is the only reason I was interested in coming. The train trip is fun, and some of the activities are fun, but the boat was not fun, and really formal group dinners are not fun.

Also a couple of people came onto the train sputtering and I’m starting to feel it too. I’m not sick sick yet, just starting to get a feeling. Most of the train was coughing and sniffling today, so I think I’ve definitely got something, and there doesn’t seem much sense in dropping out of the activities since everybody else is already sick, but I’ll still feel like a dick for it

For the first time in over 30 years, a Mildura bound train has left from Maryborough! We’re running about 40 minutes late because a freight train was also running 40 minutes late

I have 2 bars of reception and 3 fully charged power banks so I’ll be right. Could be worse

We’ve just started moving again, but that seems like a bad omen…

We got a royal welcoming committee in Donald. I think the entire town was here to greet us! All the school kids were lined up waving to us, all the industrial business we passed had nobody working - everybody was at the fence waving to us. Every level crossing there were 5-10 people waving

I’ve been on many heritage trains, but I’ve never had a reception quite like that

I’m not sure anyone told them we were running 50 minutes late and our 30-40 min stop was going to turn into a 10 min one though, so I think we disappointed them a little :(

Soooo our train has stopped at woomelang, but it stopped after the crossing signal on a little temporary platform thing. It’s been sitting here for 30 minutes triggering the level crossing and we still have another half hour here… Nobody’s moving it, it’s just idling on the platform setting off the crossing alarms.

There’s no barriers, but people are really confused about what they’re meant to do

That’s good! I hope you’re well rested. Sucks about the accom and energy/momentum, but that seems to just be something that comes along with longer trips, especially when you’re changing accommodation every night/every few nights. My current trip is feeling kinda similar in terms of the accommodation. Long story short, because of my age I need an adult with me, and because of safety concerns and just general privacy, we needed 2 bedrooms rather than 1 with 2 beds, but the hotel was booked. They had a cancellation so it worked out for all of us, but it was stressful while we were waiting to hear back.

And dinner went late last night and couldn’t get the early night I was hoping for, so it was hard to enjoy the day today when I was tired from the time I woke up until I slept
