Nothing makes me feel safer than cycling on the road with only a white line to protect me and having to dodge parts of cars left from previous crashes #BikeTooter

The latest Agenda Briefing Forum includes a small but potentially significant update to our investments policy, as part of 'Item 11.3 April 2024 Policy Review'. The amendment to policy 302 currently specifies that we will 'prefer' to invest term deposits in institutions with no current record of funding fossil fuels, provided that this will give a rate of return on investment at least equal to the other options available (on page 68 here): https://www.victoriapark.wa.gov.au/council-meetings/agenda-briefing-forum/agenda-briefing-forum-07-may-2024/1005/documents/11.3.3%20attachment%201%20policies%20with%20amendments%20from%20april%20review.pdf

Would you rather your local government invest term deposits in banks with a higher rate of return (and perhaps reinvest those profits into climate action), or get a lower rate of return but avoid banks that fund fossil fuels?

I'm an immigrant, and didn't grow up with the ANZAC legend as it has evolved in recent decades. As ANZAC Day approaches, I have been taking the time to learn about the history of the day. There is a continuing need to reflect deeply on the lessons of the past.

That involves not only recognising the immense suffering that both soldiers and civilians experience during wartime, but also being willing to question why that suffering happened and whether it needed to happen.

There was a strong anti-war movement during World War One, and during subsequent wars that Australia has been involved in. Now, as many Australians continue to call on our government to take a stronger stance against the ongoing genocide in Palestine, and as Australian forces are supporting the US bombing of Yemen, it is worth continuing to interrogate what we have learned from the past.

It is also important to reflect on which forms of violence we consider legitimate. How do we understand the deaths of Australian soldiers on a foreign beach as part of a struggle for freedom? How do we treat the history of resistance to colonialism (in Australia and elsewhere)? https://overland.org.au/2018/05/enduring-silence-anzac-day-and-the-frontier-wars/

I love that there's now a Bike Bus in our neighbourhood! https://www.perthnow.com.au/local-news/local-father-starts-lathlain-primary-school-communal-bike-bus-to-encourage-physical-activity-for-students--c-13936930

I do not love that so many of the comments (on the original article and on FB) are people complaining about cyclists taking up space on the road.

The Sen̓áḵw development sounds amazing, and because of my recent obsession I've looked a little more into the parking situation. It's "being designed as a car-lite minimal parking development with roughly 600 vehicle parking stalls for 6,000 residents, with an emphasis on transit and active transportation including a transit hub, new bus stops and thousands of secured bike parking spaces." https://www.shapeyourcity.ca/senakw-kits-point/widgets/144177/faqs #AffordableHousing #Indigenous #Parking

I've reached the 'emailing academics to ask for copies of their paywalled parking research' level of nerdery

@peterdutoit And organise to push governments at all levels to support public transport, bicycle, and other non-car infrastructure!
