Should I give up on my beliefs, ideologies and assimilate with society, so I could get an equal chance to everything, or stand out for myself, even if that means I will barely have equal chances in life?

ChrisWere,
@ChrisWere@toot.wales avatar

@gmate8 Apart from this being a false dichotomy, you probably have to think about what you want our of life and what type of person you want to be.

It's easy to be ethical when the cause is popular. It's when you have to make personal sacrifices for what you believe that truly define your character.

It helps to find community in others who share your beliefs.

@gmate8 There's no "best" course to take here. It all depends on what your definition of success is.

For me, I do my best to stand by my principles and lead by example, but I'm certainly not perfect. I personally find leading by example to be a great way of promoting an ethical stance.

Just gutted at seeing what's happened to #Bandcamp. Downloading all my tunes off there tonight. Fortunately a lot of bands and artists sell MP3s direct off their website, so that'll be my first port-of-call henceforth.

@gmate8 Yeah, I think the writing was on the wall for a while now.

Just saw someone decidedly leave their shopping trolley in the car park, rather than return it to the bay. It's like catching a sociopath in the wild.

Saw a few batches of cool looking mushrooms whilst on the road with @LucyCorbett.

A small number of mushrooms growing inside a hollow log.

I mean, is there even anyone in the House of Representatives who would actually just function as a Speaker without playing vicious partisan games?

I mean, by tradition, it would have to be a Republican, but even if you break that tradition, is even any Democrat going to give the current batshit Republican party the time of day?

Theoretically, Speaker is a procedural job, and it is possible to do that without bias, applying the same standards for access to both parties.

Theoretically.

@TerryHancock That was wat I was thinking through the process.

I'm in a bit of a busy and hectic part of my life right now, but I'm really itching to start making videos again. Maybe PeerTube exclusive, maybe YouTube/TikTok too. Just got that itch again.

I'm giving @FreeTube another go. So far, I really like it. Anyone else out there use it?

@davidoclubb I think Freetube basically acts as a front end of Invidious. Mine connects to a random instance on launch, to keep the load spread.

I really like the idea of P2P messengers, but none of them have nailed it just yet. #FOSS #OpenSource

Tox: Good, but it seems to have stalled, and there are no clients for iOS and Mac. They seem to be developing a standard which is key.

Session: Another good one, but only has first party apps, don't developing a standard - rather just apps, and is a little crypto-ey.

Delta Chat: not really P2P but uses a set standard (email), wish there were more choice of inter operable apps.

ChrisWere,
@ChrisWere@toot.wales avatar

On the decentralised side.

XMPP: Functionally great, but finding a reliable server is touch-and-go. I've had a couple of XMPP providers close on me without notice.

IRC: Classic, old-school, not many people are likely to use it, least of all the personal messaging part.

Matrix: Not terrible, but limited clients, complex, clunky, a little bit corporate. Not many people are able to keep a server up and running. Matrix.org hosts like 99% of all the activity on the network.

Did I miss any out?

@TheFrenchGhosty Interesting, might have to give it another serious go.

Hot take: any browser that uses Blink web-engine is just repackaged Chrome/Chromium and not worth considering as a primary browser. Extra-negative points if the browser isn't open source.

That being said, the fact that Mozilla make it so hard to make their engine modular is a crime.

I'm kinda taken back by how many right-wingers are coming out of the woodwork to defend Russel Brand. Going from hard-left to Covid conspiracies to whatever-he-is-now is kinda sus, and it's weird how he's got so many right-wing commentators just running interference for him.

It seems the lesson here is if you think you might be outed as a rapist, make a hard pivot to the right and you'll have people protecting your career.

I do quite like that #LinuxMint has somewhat de-commercialised Ubuntu, but I do think that it would be so awesome if they made LMDE their main release. I always get a fair bit of (justified) push-back on that spicy hot #Linux take but I genuinely stand by it.

@mxtthxw They say you can spot a sociopath by whether they return their shopping cart to the bays. It's a small task, which you're expect to do for the benefit of others, but is fundamentally without punishment for those who decide not to do it.

People really losing their minds over this 20mph roll-out. Honestly I'm all for it, given how many cars there are on the road, and the absolutely ludicrous places people park these days, we need to take it down a notch just to cope with the challenges of having so many abysmal drivers on the road.

I was in one of the early-roll-out zones and it's already started saving me bother. No it hasn't made my journeys noticeably longer, or any of the nonsense the gammon are peddling.

I don't think the "Just stop Oil" protests are particularly productive; although their concerns are more than sound.

But what really bothers me is how loudly people cheer on violence against protestors. It truly makes me feel like the people I share the roads with are monsters.

@TheFrenchGhosty At the end of the day, we'll have to pay the piper one way or another.

Also, to be fair, there's not much use in putting stock in any political catch-phrases, they're never comprehensive and are just there to get attention or make a point. We can talk about what's realistic and what's not, but if it's not realistic to take meaningful action on climate change, then we know what the consequences are. Hell, much of the world is already starting to feel them.
