Einasto Supercluster: the new heavyweight contender in the universe
An international team of scientists led by astronomers from #Tartu Observatory in #Estonia has discovered many #superclusters in the #universe, with the most prominent among them named the ‘Einasto Supercluster’ in honour of Prof. Jaan Einasto, a pioneering figure in the field, who will celebrate his 95th #birthday on 23 February.
"Regardless, the beauty of the local universe of galaxies is evident in the image where several huge superclusters of galaxies - clusters of galaxy clusters - can also be seen."
A spherical shell-like structure 1 billion light-years in diameter named Ho’oleilana is discovered in the distribution of relatively nearby galaxies. We posit this is the 1st observation of an individual Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO).
a map of the galaxy density field spanning over 700 million light years. Note how insignificant is our Local Group, that is, our home group of galaxies, in the grand scheme of things!
