Album Review: DOOL The Shape Of Fluidity

Surprised I missed saying something on the exact date (Jan 25, 1994) but 30 years ago as of that date, my favorite album of all time was released. The Smithereens may be my favorite band overall & I love their albums, but my favorite album is Too High to Die by the Meat Puppets.
1994 was a great year for music. Superunknown, Jar of Flies, Downward Spiral, just everything else amazing from that year. Too High is incredible. I can always play it, any time of day or night. It's my teen years imprinting my music tastes for the rest of my life, and they have.
I'm a big Surfers fan from way back, was talking to @wendigo about em & remembered wifey recently bought me this book that came out a couple years back, 'What Does Regret Mean?' The book's great, it details a lot of their early shows, and has some cool art.
On the right is a reprint of an early zine they made that came with the book. That's the back, because the cover is GROSS (as are its contents). It consists of crude black & white collage art on some colored pages from a mix of sources, including nasty medical things. 😂

As a teen I listened to a ton of Sonic Youth. They were my best friend's favorite band, too. I saw em at Lollapalooza '95- 🤯 by '95 they already had a bunch of 80s albums (ok, not my favorites) Dirty in '92 (classic), Experimental Jet Set in '94 (my fave?) & did songs from '95's great Washing Machine too.
I think my favorite SY song is this one, "Starfield Road" - this show is from '96.

The male-female vocal thing rules, they remind me of Sebadoh sometimes, but maybe bluesier, garage psych? I've talked about em here before. They don't make bad songs.
Opens with a fantastic Float Along - Fill Your Lungs, my favorite song of theirs. Includes an extended jam on The River and a couple setlist rarities, closing with my favorite of their recent songs, Magma. Beautiful pro shot video and an excellent mix.
It's Bandcamp Friday but it's also rent day and I'm beyond broke, so onto the next.
Also, Bandcamp has locked me out of my main account for some reason, it says it'll send me an email to get back in but it never sends it. Sent THEM an email to try and get it sorted out but who even knows. Account may just be gone. As usual. Modern websites and services. Garbage.

New FRANKIE AND THE WITCH FINGERS just came out TODAY and it is FIRE (of course).

I'm usually a fan of very short songs. But when done right, a long song can be amazing. This video is amazing too. The actual song itself is over 9 minutes long.
Have I talked about Frankie and the Witch Fingers here before? I hadn't heard of them til recently, they have a LARGE Insta following & lots of fans, apparently. Their first album was in 2015. I REALLY dig their sound. Garagey and kinda psych too- there's kinda like, heavy garage rock bits but also some Pink Floyd or Kinks influence in there? It's pretty wild.
And it's GOOD - I find it really listenable. Catchy, fast-ish songs you can just kinda let groove. If you're into 60s style garage or psych, check em out. August 12th is National Vinyl Record Day (apparently) so I grabbed all the vinyl I could find in my house. It's not a lot. I used to have many crates full. But after many moves, I thinned the collection down to nearly nothing, as I do digital music mostly now (I have no turntable anymore either). But sometimes, I grab a couple. Bought the bottom row here recently. Odd I can't find my copy of Telekon. Pretty sure I still have that one somewhere. I hope so. And wow, I have two copies of Green Thoughts, one signed, one not. Check out that picture disc. I should get better photos of it eventually. It's rad.
