Low property taxes mean that beach lifeguards only work peak summer weeks.

Low property taxes mean that city lifeguards only get paid $18/hour to checks notes literally save lives.

Low property taxes mean that getting your kids into swimming lessons is nearly impossible in .

Low property taxes mean that it’s really hard to have a safe summer day at the beach as a kid.

Low property taxes are part of the reason why some family is having the worst time of their lives right now.

Reminder that the city of likes to unilaterally decide when summer starts and ends. Has Britannia Beach been packed for weeks already? Did a 9-yr old just die? Yes. Will this change the city’s approach to funding how the city operates in an era where it’s much warmer for longer? No probably not. The speakers mentioning no lifeguards are on duty are like speed signs. Meh, that’s enough

WTL, to running
@WTL@mastodon.social avatar

Tuesday:
84 seconds of plank,
Walked @TAV and Sprocket to the dock in the park
7.54km of #running (20°C, with a Humidex of 24°C)
11 minutes Yoga for runners
20 minutes of HIIT
20 minutes Strength training
10 minutes Mindful Cooldown

Changed the order today as it's already oppressively hot out for me. I’m wrecked by the end of the workouts. Starting with the running really burns me out.

This week trying two days running, one cycling (tomorrow), and two more running. 🤞🏻

Biked by Britannia Beach today with 2 fire trucks, 5 cop cars and 3 paramedic vehicles all lights and sirens blaring. Apparently a neighbourhood kid is in critical condition after presumably being found unresponsive in the water. Fuck I hate this. It’s so common and yet so easy to avoid and I’ll stake my claim that the beach is one area where phones should just be banned. It takes no time for shit like this to happen with aspirated water in the lungs

This isn’t a shit on other parents / holier than thou from me. I’ve sat at the beach. I’ve watched others for a long time at the beach. And I’ve used my phone while sitting at the beach, though our kid doesn’t swim there. 30 secs isn’t that long. What’s 45 seconds right? It’s like driving and using a cellphone. I’ve done it and now I don’t. Ever. Driving or at a beach with the kid. Shit happens so fast #ottawa #kids #drowning

Nothing radicalized me more than living without a car. I firmly believe it’s a literal and metaphorical vehicle for the future. It opens you up to your community. It can make you feel joy when there are many days right now where it’s conflicting to feel joy.

I think more people should become radicalized. Life is a lot different, a lot better, change is scary and every fucking minute of it is worth it #ottawa #ottbike #biketooter #worldbikeday

Some closed NCC pathways on the south east side of Bells Corners on a morning just trying to make new connections west of us and south of us.

From Bells Corners and the Trans Canada Trail going east, I’ve never spent much time. All the roads down there scare me to be honest. I just dont trust people and not knowing where decent shoulders are makes the exploration slow. Yes Google street view etc but my capacity for planning only goes so far 🤷‍♂️

PSA: (and a question). and pulled two ticks off the kid after a hike in Gatineau park. And you NEED to check all of the little ones, especially parts of genitalia you can’t just visibly check. Both of these dots are ticks but unsure what kind. Does anyone know if there is a drop off location to get these tested? Lymes disease is shit and the risk increases a LOT after 24-36 hrs attached

Only 11°C outside now, going down to 7C overnight and a high of 20C tomorrow. The house is a bit cool heading to bed. I suspect I'll want to run the furnace tomorrow morning to take the chill off for breakfast.

I'm glad the temps are staying low as we head into June. Makes enjoying the outdoors much nicer if we're not into the hot stuff.

Just as the far right extremists are the biggest threat to safety in #Canada, the #Conservative party is the biggest threat to safety in #Ottawa. The NDP and the Libs are claiming trouble getting people to run because of the safety issues faced by those on Parliment Hill, caused by the Conservative Party and #Pollievre spreading extremist hatred
