Christine Borgman and Amy Brand are right: "The current state of #OpenData in scholarly publishing is in transition from ‘nice to have’ to ‘need to have.’" And this fact has consequences: "To make research processes more trustworthy, transparent, and verifiable, stakeholders need to make greater investments in data stewardship and knowledge #infrastructures." https://hdsr.mitpress.mit.edu/pub/imfn7i7f/release/2?readingCollection=a6db7dff

Open Future's newest white paper, authored by @zwarso and myself, addresses the governance of data sets used for #AI training.
Over the past two years, it has become evident that shared datasets are necessary to create a level playing field and support AI solutions in the public interest. Without these shared datasets, companies with vast proprietary data reserves will always have the winning hand.
However, data sharing in the era of AI poses new challenges. Thus, we need to build upon established methods like #opendata refining them and integrating innovative ideas for data governance.
Our white paper proposes that data sets should be governed as commons, shared and responsibly managed collectively. We outline six principles for commons-based governance, complemented by real-life examples of these principles in action.
In the context of guarding against mixing proprietary data with open data and thereby producing an output that can't be licensed openly, how much proprietary data is too much?
If I were to (say) estimate historical hourly electricity demand by county using only open data, and then I compared my output with a commercial dataset to see whether they agree that seems like it would be fine. Right?

"As more of us become involved in serving information electronically to other users, we so-called “digital librarians” must become conscious of our ethical responsibilities to protect the privacy of our the users being served. ...
This information has power, a power that can be abused and thereby thwart the usefulness of the tools we promote."
@wndlb Thank you, Brewster. @brewsterkahle I love reading your communication. (Always both youthful AND wise.) And, of course, I love using the incredible tools you've birthed and nurtured. Thank you for all your hard, constant, important work!
Handling and storing sensitive data in collaborative research projects. For this workshop on #opendata, o rather #FAIRdata, Katharina Lobinger, Associate Professor for online communication at the Institute of Digital Technologies for Communication (USI), will report on her experience with collecting, storing, and publishing sensitive (visual) data as compiled in her SNF-funded study “Visualised relationships - social uses and conflicts. A repertoire-oriented study of visual and image-related communication between close friends and couples in Switzerland”. She will give a one-hour presentation addressing ethical issues at various stages of her study, which will be followed by an extended discussion and exchange with the workshop participants.
The event is organised by Sara Greco (Università della Svizzera italiana) on behalf of CHORD-talk-in-interaction. It will take place at USI Università della Svizzera italiana on Monday, April 29th, 2024, 10:00h – 12:00h. The event can be attended in person and via Zoom.
To attend the workshop, please register by Monday, April 22nd, 2024, using this link. @dh @linguistics
International Day of #Forests. These are the forests we have now, according to a new #opendata forest cover layer built with TanDEMx (so I would expect it to be very accurate). Let's try and keep as much of this as we can. https://geoservice.dlr.de/web/maps/tdm:forest
Do you work in open source? Do you think it has a funding problem? If so, please take my 10 minute survey at https://opensource.study. By participating, you can help provide an understanding of what has worked and what hasn’t in the ecosystem.
This survey is part of a research project at ASU and is completely voluntary. If you have any questions about participation, please reach out to me here.
We want to apply to the Google Season of Docs for #PUDL but have never worked with an outside technical writer before. Does anybody have someone to recommend? It's a #Python project focused on producing open data describing the US energy system.
