Manifesto of the day: for any executable X that shows up in the list of running processes, 'man X' should work and tell me what it does. This is actually the case on the base system, but is very very far away.

Friends, is the fact that the Humble bundle that has my "The Book of PF" along with a number of other good titles, the "Dive into DevOps" bundle https://www.humblebundle.com/books/dive-into-dev-ops-no-starch-books has sold more than 8,000 bundles and made more than CAD27,000 for the charity a cause for celebration or should I hold off until we see rounder numbers?

Anyway the bundle runs until June 10th 2024, so get your clicks and cards ready!

Today, I revamped my blog theme ( https://it-notes.dragas.net ) and moved it to @OpenBSDAms VPS, powered by httpd.
BunnyNet stands as the CDN upfront, can we still consider it hosted on OpenBSD? 🤔

If you ever wanted to see how a failing NVME SSD underneath #OpenBSD 's softraid crypto layer looks like, here you.

From one moment to another, the system was unusable due to the sheer amount of softraid failures. I cannot boot beyond single user mode because the partitions cannot be marked as clean.

I had proper backup, so reinstalling on another SSD wasn't a problem. I could mount the dirty partitions r/o and so transfer the diff over as well.

Video of OpenBSD in single user mode. White font on black screen with kernel output in blue. It shows several attempts to fsck(8) different partitions and marking them as clean fails every time due to I/O errors reported by the kernel

The #CVE count of the #Linux #kernel is not looking good these days compared to any other #OS is it. Maybe time to switch to #FreeBSD or some other system which doesn't claim to find hundreds of significant vulnerabilities every day

mcepl,
@mcepl@floss.social avatar

@mort Are you listening to yourself? The system which reports fewer security issues is more secure? Really? Then you should switch to #OpenBSD, because they hide their security errors best!

Do have very good hardware support? I want to buy Acer laptop and install OpenBSD on it.

Short of checking their hardware support against a specific laptop model, I'd just say thinkpad is generally a safer bet than acer.

If you don't mind refurbished laptops, you can buy openbsd preinstalled... https://minifree.org/
