Long postmortem piece on #Neeva from the Verge. I played with it at the time, and I’m not surprised at all that the project failed: the product never made any sense. No, nobody will pay a monthly subscription fee for a web search website, even if it is more private (but merely self-asserted), in particular an unproven one. I always loved technology and it's exciting to see what potential applications LLMs like Chat-GPT have. Unfortunately... one application I really don't like is how the internet is being flooded by absolute dog shite quality "articles" and "blogs". I hate this so much 😭 it's contributing to how Google can't find good results anymore AND makes the internet worse #ai#gpt
Because of that, I actually feel like I'm the only nerd who liked using the #Neeva search engine since it was better than Google at filtering out search results from low quality websites. Unfortunately they have had to shut down
Post-#neeva update: I have the feeling that the search results at #Kagi are slowly getting better. What I am missing at the moment? It would be great if you didn't have to choose either Germany OR International for "Region", but could select several individually weighted regions.
2023-06-04 is when I officially admit search engines are no longer useful. Looked for a specific instance of a general issue, got nothing but the general topic with no mention of the specifics. DuckDuckGo, Google, hell I even tried Bing.
I miss Altavista and its search modifiers that worked
@randomgeek#Neeva was nice but they tried chasing the “#AI” dragon’s tail like every other #SearchEngjne now trying to be an “#AnswerEngine,” ran out of funding runway and closed shop a month ago.
At least they had their own spider bot and index, unlike #DuckDuckGo. Probably contributed to the above collapse
In an earlier post, I extolled the virtues of the #SearchEngine#Neeva, which was one of the first to use #AI to deliver a search result summary. I take it all back. Neeva suddenly announced it will be shutting down on June 1, and even before that date, it already sold itself to #BigData company #Snowflake. It is an almost comical example of sellout and betrayal. I should never have trusted a guy who used to be a #Google insider.
And when I used #Neeva to ask for alternative #SearchEngines that don’t #track or collect #data, it recommended #Bing. So there’s your reliable #AI result…. 😂
I paid for #Neeva and it was great for a while. Then they kept offering all kinds of useless add-ons that had nothing to do with the main mission of #search (what I signed in for). Then they sold out for big bucks. It seems to me a classic case of #BigTech believing it always has to “improve” the product, that growth is necessarily good, and/or it has to give its employees something to do.
@caos#neeva has been my one and only for the past few months. after they announced their shut down I am looking for another ad free search. unfortunately there aren't a lot :/ #kagi seems nice but their pricing model doesn't convince me. so far #nona is my favorite.

Whelp with the shutdown of #neeva I have made the switch to #brave#search which seems to have improved a lot and has some of the same features I was enjoying. I don't wanna use #DDG because never got good results with it and they just proxy other search engines... Brave Search is like Neeva doing their own crawling and has some really nice modern features. I have also decided to give Brave Browser a second shot, so far not to shabby.
Entirely unsurprised that #Neeva couldn't make search profitable enough. Nobody can. Pivoting to AI bullshit is just gonna be a grift until they run out of VC.
So, what do I do for search now? And don't say Kagi. I really like being able to rank results, does DDG let you do that or do I just give up and go back to Bing/Google hybrid and be disappointed with both?
Anyone have other good search engines to try? I was using duckduckgo before neeva but was frequently disappointed by search results. Neeva works really well!

I'm going to miss Spaces and Personalized #Search. I didn't use Connected Apps that much, but it's going to sting for those who paid for a #Neeva subscription specifically to add capabilities to that feature.
