Why does #MariaDB / #MySQL seem to ship in a really inefficient default config where a few concurrent queries of moderate tables (7,000 rows) brings it to its knees. (I never have to do such performance tuning on MSSQL.)
The “My” in the MySQL language refers to the name of the co-founder Michael Widenius's daughter My. In addition to My, Michael has two other kids - Maria and Max and you can follow the pattern to understand the source of other two DBs names 😂
super specific random question: has there been a recent change in #MySQL that it now refuses to accept right-closing parenthesis characters in query strings? some over-eager SQL injection protection maybe? noticed my old trust PHP/MySQL setup was erroring out last night, and it was all due to wanting to add a ")" in a string, despite the string being run through various escaping and safe-making functions
"#MySQL's Repeatable Read still allows G2-item, G-single, and lost update. [...] Repeatable Read also violates internal consistency. Furthermore, it violates Monotonic Atomic View: transactions can observe some of another transaction’s effects, then later fail to observe other effects of that same transaction. We demonstrate violations of ANSI #SQL’s requirements for Repeatable Read" https://jepsen.io/analyses/mysql-8.0.34
Ever struggle with #database design? Do you just not get it?
I have a talk, "how to fake a database design", that will explain the basics to you. You can't learn all of it in an hour, but if you watch it a few times and let it sink in, it will help you tremendously.
This talk was in Bulgaria, but it I gave the same talk at OSCON and got 5/5 stars for it.
As much as I would love to consider #MariaDB instead of #MySQL, there is a rather severe (confirmed) bug in their JSON_TABLE implementation that I have reported almost two years ago and is still unfixed.
It's confusing that MariaDB, which positions itself even as a MongoDB alternative, doesn't care to fix this. For anyone taking the time to submit these bugs, it's also really irritating.
