Walking around with my camera + macro lens looking for small stuff has been a great way to discover species I had never even heard of. This long-horned bee is a great example! Super big and hairy (look at those hind legs!), covered in pollen, it was slowly moving from one flower to next and spent just enough time near me to capture a few shots.
Ok mastodon brains trust, especially Aussie ones. Anyone know what little bugs come out of this. There were two of them & both shaped almost like the Tesla logo. There was also a little green praying mantis nest (or whatever they’re called) nearby. Very soft & papery to touch. #Bugs#Insects#Nest
It's firefly season at Congaree National Park in South Carolina, and a lucky few won the park lottery this year — an opportunity to see thousands of fireflies, blinking in synchrony, for a few short weeks this spring.
NPR reports: "According to the National Park Service, there are just three types of fireflies in North America that are synchronous, meaning they coordinate their belly lanterns to flash at exactly the same time."

All kinds of insects are flourishing this year, including the giant walking stick (Megaphasma denticrus). I had seen males before (left), but never a female (right). She is significantly larger than the male and the largest insect in the US.
They are the same animal: a seven-spotted ladybug (coccinella septempunctata) and its larva. The ladybug is an aphid-eater used for pest control, but the larvae are even more effective for this.

The Banded demoiselle can be seen flitting around slow-moving rivers, ponds and lakes. The males are metallic blue, with a distinctive dark band across their wings, and the females are a shiny green.
