This is a female blue dasher dragonfly. I came across it during our morning walk. I originally said I thought is was a meadowhawk, but a Mastodon friend helped me with a positive ID.
A new addition to my dragonfly collection is this rare Uhler's Sundragon (Helocordulia uhleri) which I found this morning.
This dragonfly is vulnerable in Ontario.
I've been so, so busy. First there were house repairs, then the difficult once-every-5-years purge of documents, books, and other unwanted/unneeded stuff from around the house. As I've been retired for 5 years, I was finally able to let go of all the remnants of my working life. Here are some pictures from last year about this time: a #hummingbird , a black #swallowtail#butterfly, a #downywoodpecker feeding her fledgling, and a blue dasher #dragonfly. #birds#birding#nature#photography
Any dragonfly lovers out here in the Fediverse? I got this photo yesterday during my visit to the Duck River. If you know the species and/or a fun fact drop a comment! #dragonfly#photography#NaturePhotography#bugs#insects
Small wildlife seen on a hike near a stream. The main trail mostly ran along the chaparral-covered hillside just outside the riparian zone, but a few branches went down through the trees to the stream.
The lizard was well-camouflaged as it skittered around the tree trunk, in contrast to the two #dragonflies (a vivid blue dancer and a flame skimmer -- you can probably guess which is which!) There were quite a few small blue dancers (like half this length!) flying around the trail uphill from the stream bed. This one was resting on a wooden beam placed across the stream as a bridge. Finally, a checkered white #butterfly in front of the invasive mustard plants that were all over the lower parts of the chaparral.
The depth of field isn't optimal, but it's still a pretty dragonfly that allowed me to make a few snaps from 4 feet away, while the light meter was completely and utterly wrong.
Straight from camera (#SOOC) other than some cropping #photography#insect#dragonfly#MyWork
Garden clearing can be endless - I'm currently cutting up buddleia and elder that had gotten out of control. Upside is I get to observe the insects that enjoy the garden, including this beautiful broad-bodied chaser dragonfly. #insects#dragonfly
Dragonflies seem like magical creatures to me, with their gossamer wings and long bodies. I can't help but feel I'm being visited by something enchanted whenever they wiz by. Some say, if one lands on you, it's good luck.
I’ve been lucky enough to do some #prototyping at my friend @Moritzsimongeist studio for this 🤩 - and here’s a little beautiful visual playfulness for Sunday evening.
It's December so welcome to the 2022 #dragonfly#AdventCalendar featuring a different species each day for 24 days. We start with a Common Clubtail. Not at all common in the UK and until this year I'd never got a photo. So I went on a British Dragonfly Society guided dragonfly walk at #RipplePits and saw several. They like large, slow-flowing rivers. #wildlife#insects#wildlifephotography
Day 3 of the 2022 #dragonfly#AdventCalendar - this tiny #damselfly was the highlight of my year - Dainty Damselfly may look much like the very-common Azure but it's extremely rare in the UK with only a handful of sites, none of them on public land. Thanks to #SandwichBay Bird Observatory who organised guided walks to see them. #wildlife#insects#wildlifephotography
I broke the thread so here's a quick repost of day 4 of the 2022 #dragonfly#AdventCalendar. This beauty is a White-faced Darter. They like boggy places. The UK population is mainly in Scotland; it's extremely rare in northern England and absent from the south. This one was at the only site in #Wales, right on the border at Fenn's, Whixall & Bettisfield Mosses NNR.
