@bookstodon Another really good graphic nonfiction book I've read recently, and recommend, is WE HEREBY REFUSE, regarding the Japanese-Americans forced into internment camps in WWII.
The story addresses a common victim-blaming response to the plight of others: "Why didn't they fight back?" It's almost always the wrong question, even though indeed, they did fight back. Victim-blaming is a pernicious permission structure, allowing us not to care about terrible events that happen to other people.
Book 19 - 2024 (cont) "Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins - Beauregard Lionett"
Graphic Novel
My one (tiny) complaint is that at 52 pages it felt a little short - but it's a quality bound, small format hard cover, and does have 4 back pages of character development sketches.
I think I'm just used to books that are Sandman / Saga length, and those are prob not representative of the averge Trade Paperback/Hardback comic any more
I've enjoyed the #Criticalrole Origins comics - (own all, am slowly reading them).
This gives background to Beau's family life and why she was sent to the Cobalt Soul academy - essentially it's treated like an 'Involuntary Trouble Youth residential School'. Great story, great art, even some character development sketches / evolution. Highly recommend.
Book 18 - 2024 'Head-On' John Scalzi: Audiobook: Amber Benson
2nd time alternating between reading text/listening to Audiobook - again - really enjoyed Amber Benson Narration
Didn't enjoy this as much as it's predecessor 'Lock-In' by Scalzi. This plot felt meandering.
Being familiar with the characters, I liked learning more about their lives and the world they live in, but felt the plot (although highly plausible) was mostly 'meh'
