Beekeeper's advice for the day: It's springtime, which is swarming season. If you do not want to have to deal with bees in your walls, make sure to either seal up or put mesh over any exterior hole in your house (especially your eaves and siding), particularly holes that are about penny to thumbtack sized. #beekeeping#advice
The video of bee activity post was interrupted by a lot of bee activity so I made a new video.
Saw lots of pollen going in, or trying to with the traffic jam there. I looked at the feeder earlier and they have hardly touched it today so I guess they have the hive back in order now after 6 days.
So, my bees swarmed today. That was an adventure. My friend and I were able to retrieve the swarm from pretty high up in a tree on my property. Bees will swarm when a hive decides to split, usually because the space they're living in is getting too cramped for the number of bees that the local resources can support. In this case it's because we hadn't added additional boxes to expand the space for the hive soon enough, oops.
Anyone wondering what wax worms look like (as they start working into an empty hive), here's a good photo. Your easiest fix -- especially in a small hive--is to freeze the frames, which kills all the eggs and larvae, and hope bees move in quickly! A large, healthy hive will keep out wax moths. #beekeeping#tips#beekeepingtips#waxmoths https://m.ai6yr.org/@natesiggard/112294809202487916
Wax moths have a valuable role, I believe, in the ecosystem -- especially in the wild. They favor old, dark wax (which bees HATE), and consume it to for nutrition. In hives in trees, they will eat away all the old crappy wax and some wood (for good measure), and then they die off when they run out of old wax. That leaves a VERY CLEAN and pristine cavern that is perfect for bees. The bees move back in and the cycle starts again. (this process, however, is very destructive for beekeepers, as they destroy frames, foundation, and even boxes). #beekeeping#waxmoths#tips
While reviewing a couple of hours of video from today, I did see some bees leave and the same or others come back. Maybe the new sign above the entrance is helping or it's just nurse bees assigned to foraging so they don't have a clue where home is and actually pay attention to the entrance.
Without many (any?) foragers the bees in the upper split seem thirsty. It's surprising how fast they all show up once one of them finds water on the landing board. I had been dribbling some on there but found a little cap that fit.
I made a little landing board for the double screened divider. Then after reviewing an hour of video where many bees left with whatever they were carrying to clean the hive, only one bee returned.. so I made a little robbing screen as an obstacle so maybe they'd re-orientate, or just not fly off with the dead drones. That seems to have worked.
They seem to be getting rid of drones, which is good because that's more room for worker brood.
I made two nucs today, my bees already have a lot of breed. Unfortunately we lost some hives during winter so I need to get to a sustainable level again. #bees#beekeeping#berlin#cargobikes
Every time I come back from checking my hive and things look good, I feel like giving a State of the Beehive speech
LOOK AROUND YOU, SEE THE CELLS FULL OF HONEY AND BROOD, FAT WHITE LARVAE EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK, PLENTY OF SPACE FOR CONJUGAL VISITS, NURSERIES AND PANTRIES, AND ASK YOURSELF:
Bees fanning - sending out queen bee pheromone to help the bees land in the right place (after I scooped them all out of the compost.bin they had moved into). #beekeeping
Hmm, failed swarm capture. It appears the swarm had already decided to move elsewhere, and rejected the ready made box with wax! I suspect we caught them past the scouting committee decision making process. Like introducing a new proposal after the City Council has approved a subcommittees plan!! #beekeeping
