#AI #AGI #Dystopias #GodLikeAI #Film #SciFi #Movies #Cinema: "It is strange how these fears, once prominent, have faded into the annals of sci-fi history, but have seen a resurrection of sorts in the growing discussion of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and existential threats from AI. Sure, some fears of AGI and super-intelligent machines are unjustified, but it is interesting that some of these fears may very well have some early roots in these terrifying depictions of Godlike machines. I don’t think that we can learn a lot from these films, but at least they deserve to be revisited by those who are interested in popular culture depictions of AI. The ‘Godlike AI’ phase, though often overlooked, bears some intriguing reflections on humanity’s inherent fears, and hopes from its technological creations." https://www.technollama.co.uk/forgotten-dystopias-the-godlike-ai-that-time-forgot

As impressive as Musk's solitary NeuraLink demo is, beneath the hype lies a misperception with a disturbing parallel to large language models. Both operate on statistical inference rather than scientific models of the brain, and garner attention for cherrypicked successes 1/3

#SciFi #AI #Singularity #AGI: "The singularity concept postulates that AI will soon become superintelligent, far surpassing humans in capability and bringing the human-dominated era to a close. While the concept of a tech singularity sometimes inspires negativity and fear, Vinge remained optimistic about humanity's technological future, as Brin notes in his tribute: "Accused by some of a grievous sin—that of 'optimism'—Vernor gave us peerless legends that often depicted human success at overcoming problems... those right in front of us... while posing new ones! New dilemmas that may lie just ahead of our myopic gaze. He would often ask: 'What if we succeed? Do you think that will be the end of it?'"

Vinge's concept heavily influenced futurist Ray Kurzweil, who has written about the singularity several times at length in books such as The Singularity Is Near in 2005. In a 2005 interview with the Center for Responsible Nanotechnology website, Kurzweil said, "Vernor Vinge has had some really key insights into the singularity very early on. There were others, such as John Von Neuman, who talked about a singular event occurring, because he had the idea of technological acceleration and singularity half a century ago. But it was simply a casual comment, and Vinge worked out some of the key ideas."

Kurzweil's works, in turn, have been influential to employees of AI companies such as OpenAI, who are actively working to bring superintelligent AI into reality. There is currently a great deal of debate over whether the approach of scaling large language models with more compute will lead to superintelligence over time, but the sci-fi influence looms large over this generation's AI researchers." https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2024/03/vernor-vinge-father-of-the-tech-singularity-has-died-at-age-79/

After all, LLMs learn in the opposite direction from humans. LLMs start out learning language and attempt to abstract concepts. Human babies learn concepts first, and only later acquire the language to describe them."

With all the recent breakthroughs in AI, it's clear AGI is right around the corner, just extrapolate the trend and imagine where we could be in a few years.

Much in the same way that interstellar travel was right around the corner in 1969 after the moon landings.

Woot, extended 2 more job offers today, one Jr. and one Sr. I suspect there are at least 3 more people in the pipeline I will be hiring. All from this one post.

That leaves at least 10 out of 15 positions open for anyone still looking for a job!

We also just donated another $5K to our open-source fund. This will go to paying open-source contributors on our projects bounties for completing certain tasks. Very excited by that as well. We are even using it on interviews for code projects so in a sense we are paying people to take interviews with us even if they dont get the job through those bounties. I am getting some interesting reactions with that one.

Does anyone get the idea that the main motivation for #AGI is a fantasy that conservative billionaires can free themselves of any need for pesky highly educated people?

They are quite set in the idea that higher education and well educated population is an existential threat. The current crop of investment is a cocktail grift, fomo and delusional zeal that they are on the cusp of a perfect instrumentality (see Forbidden Planet) and luxury.

I think the most horrifying thing about the #AGI craze is the eagerness with which business owners race toward what they believe will bring about the end of human civilization.

They don't know that “#AI” isn't actually intelligent and can't actually replace people, but they think it can, they must know that replacing everyone with machines will result in basically everyone starving to death, and they WANT that. They're speedrunning it.

Let it never again be said that #greed is good.

I am truly amazed at the number of applicants I have seen off of this single post. And almost all are well suited candidates worth my time to review. I am astonished that a single post on the fedi is more effective than actually hiring a recruiter. Thank you everyone for the boosts and applications.

While many applicants have made it through and are currently being hired because we have so many positions we have quite a few still available for every level from sr to jr, and both data scientists and programmers. So please keep boosting, sharing, and applying if anyone is interested.

Just a reminder this is 100% remote, no fixed hours, will pay market rates for position. I will be your direct boss and hiring manager (also owner, founder, and inventor of the tech).

A large chunk of people stating #AGI is the future and is coming soon are spokespeople for companies that are in the #AI business, most of whom are in some startup phase. Well, not a large chunk but the chunk that is getting press. Of course they are saying that.

The models need clarity and refinement to make them useful, and so far every model that has "matured" reaches a level of degenerative uselessness. Google's search engine is a prime example of it, as people purposely tuned their web-based context (some with AI help) to create garbage web pages that to Google's search engine AI looked good enough to index and include in results, and now results are fairly useless. The LLMs will begin to show these same signs as they are not being fed curated data, they are simply being fed a huge amount of data as fast as possible.

Until we can come to a consensus as a society on what we deem to be right and wrong which we can't do "acoustically" then we're not going to be able to do it digitally. We're not going to get Star Trek's Data or even a HAL 9000. We'll get something shitty that eventually breaks down.

For a bit of context, my first AI projects I worked on were 14 years ago preparing good and bad data example sets to train models, and even in that small and controlled environment it was somewhat difficult to start approaching correct output, and those models were tiny by today's standards.

Fast, expensive, accurate. If you're developing AI models, pick only two. And one of those picks has to be "expensive".

That said, I do use existing LLMs as I find them useful in many cases, but I obviously have to validate the results.

Problem: Models are black boxes and results not reproducible and auditable from pure usage. #AGI #fosdem2024 Government oversight should be there. Nadella from Microsoft wants AI for pure market growth. OpenAI works on Superalignment with 20 percent of resources. Speaker thinks: Safety should be 80 percent! And we need a debate in #FOSS about it.

Reminder of the potential range of risks connected to #AGI appearance. Safety should be priority, therefore reproducibility and a scientific approach is important. Needs availability of code and data (not the OpenAI approach anymore, I might add) #fosdem2024 #opensource
