This video outlines some of the relationships between US commuting culture and the perspectives that it’s engendered about the role of the city. The, when compared and contrasted to other nations’ approach to city design and perspectives shows that it’s possible to have a city core that’s more than just a workplace....
In #Adelaide at least, the planners don't seem to understand the "build it and they will come" principle. The story's always been "No point providing more buses. People don't use them."
When a new tram service was provided in the CBD it was claimed no-one would use it, but it turned out to be enormously popular and it's been extended in 3 directions.
Morning Mastodon, another early morning walk in #VealeGardens#Adelaide and some new flowers spotted around the place :) morning dew still on some of the flowers..
Early 6am morning walk in #VealeGardens#Adelaide just as the sun was coming up, eerily quiet in the city, only a couple of cars going by, even at 7am on the walk home.. Happy #SilentSunday
No wonder my brain is bleh today... (and for those playing overseas...that's deg Celcius) Should've known to add a few high temperatures 🌡 days off for NaNoWriMo. Did some tidying up.of chapter finished last night. #AdelaideSummer#tooHot#Adelaide#authorLife#writersLife#nanowrimo
Ok I'm so WTF with what @skinnylatte said here that I had to add an anecdote of my own. When I lived in Australia, most Aussies (sorry, the white ones, got to be specific) kept saying how good my English was. I explained that English IS my first language, followed by 3 others. I think they couldn't wrap their heads around the fact that a non-White person could have English as their first language. I speak in a neutral accent so that could also be another reason.
That does sound more disappointingly familiar @liztai, #Adelaide is more steadfastly Euro-Anglo culturally, than the eastern #Australia cities.
Having changed my own behaviour in this respect over many years, I would guess some of those people believe they're being encouraging to what they perceive as a growing minority of newcomers. Based on mistaken assumptions about the demographics of their area.
And some are just staunchly insular people who resist learning, of course.
New Black & White art print from a shot I took recently in Veale Gardens, Adelaide, titled "The Quiet River Alcove, Veale Wood-Ducklings" :)

I'm probably a bit late on this one (#SouthAustralia doesn't occupy much space in my brain) but holy hell, there is not an interchange between the 3 southern #adelaide metro #train lines and the glenelg #tram line.
The red and white line on the attached map goes DIRECTLY PAST Goodwood Station but does not stop. Talk about a missed opportunity!
Any plans to rebuilt the tram overpass and station or has everyone just accepted this is how it is?
