#WritersCoffeeClub Sept 23. Do you read your drafts aloud? How does this help?

Some of them, yes. It's mainly to see how a scene flows or if the dialogue has a nice rhythm to it. I think it helps catch spots where my writing can get wordy and helps find where some dialogue doesn't sound appropriate for the character or doesn't work for another reason

#WritersCoffeeClub day 22.
Would you ever consider collaborating on a book?

In as much as any book published rarely involves only the author: yes, I already have.

I suspect the question isn't really asking about working with editors, publishers, etc though ;-)

If the right idea / project / person came along, I would definitely consider co-writing a story. Used to have a lot of fun with that back in fandom days, & I love chatting stories & bouncing ideas off other people.

My final draft of Bad Memory is in Garamond.

Epic Threesome is currently in Century Schoolbook.

Mad Boy is currently in Calisto MT.

Curse of the New Age is currently in Sitka Text.

Self Insert is currently in Georgia.

I'm a font slut.

21 - Have you practised your autograph and your selfie pose for your best seller?

I don't really have a special autograph, but I do have a sort of swooshy signature. What I need more practice in is coming up with personalizations on the fly.

I'm not really into the whole selfie thing. But on a couple of occasions, friends of mine who were working on their photography portfolios did photo shoots with me. See icon, and the following.

#writerscoffeeclub Sep 20: What fonts do you use for paperbacks or drafting/digital?

For all things printed, Times New Roman because I learned that serif is better on the eye on paper.

For drafting, I often start out with the default calibri setting. Once I know it's going to be a real story, I format with chapter headers, etc., and often also adapt the standard settings. Sometimes I keep sans serif for digital, sometimes I don't. I'm undecided which I like more.

  1. Did you like to read as a child? Which books were your favourites?

I grew with X-men by Chris Claremont and Jules Verne novels, Nemo still being one of my preferred characters.

Later, Frank Herbert’s Dune and Dan Simmons’ Hyperion sci-fi were my companions during teenage years.

Another old art, depicting the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen in his palace, with the industrial and polluted Giedi Prime

#WritersCoffeeClub Sept 2: On a scale of plotter to pantser, what are you?

Fwiw, I Ike GRRM's metaphor better: architects and gardeners. Anyway, I start with a concept and then let myself discover as I go. Once/if I find something interesting, I write down outlines and character sketches, but they're mostly a record of what I found than they are a plan that I intend to follow. Basically, I plan to wander.

So I dunno, 20% architect/80% gardener?

I'd have be successful to worry about that, I think (ie, paid a single penny for something I wrote), but beyond that, I'm pretty confident in my abilities. After a lifetime of narrating my every thought in fiction-like prose and literally studying stories for a living, I'm not an imposter. I'm just kinda good at this. Still not published, mind you...

#WritersCoffeeClub 1: Self

I'm Greg, I go by math-tans because I've personified math functions for over a decade. I teach high school math and have a young daughter.

I have one short story published in an author collective. But most of my work is serialized, and on the web. I trend urban fantasy and science fiction, often with time travel and f/f romances.

Thanks for reading! Literally all my writing is catalogued on my site here: https://mathtans.wordpress.com/catalogue/

mathtans,
@mathtans@wandering.shop avatar

#WritersCoffeeClub 14: Written about an ex-partner and changed name?

WOW, guess someone's calling me out. I do sometimes use writing to process life events (like my grandma's death), and I had one breakup which was very confusing to me. So it ended up in a short serial. Which I did edit later, changing circumstances too, plus it already had magic, so not our world. But yeeeeah, not sure if anyone in the know picked up on it.

That was the only time, not something I make a habit.

mathtans,
@mathtans@wandering.shop avatar

#WritersCoffeeClub 15: Conjunctions used?

Probably 'and'. Maybe 'but'. I dunno. I like to think I go for shorter sentences (and paragraphs) particularly with the serialized format, yet even then some sentences still need to link.

Any of you noticed anything from me?

mathtans,
@mathtans@wandering.shop avatar

#WritersCoffeeClub 16: Prologues?

I don't think I've ever used one. There was a time with the serial when I had a sentence or two to recap key items at the top of the posts (particularly if the item occurred weeks ago in posting), which is about as close as I've come.

Nothing against them, just don't think I've ever had a need to provide what I'd see as a backstory or an intro cut scene.

The Woman Who Found Herself, now published, is the first in a dual timeline French historical fiction series where a family meet the ghosts of their former selves.
Death does not close the book; it only turns the page.

#WritersCoffeeClub Day 20: What fonts do you use for paperbacks or drafting/digital?

Draft is sikta 1.5 spaced. I use Scrivener and their default settings when compiling. Courier double for proofreading. I don't even know what it uses for paperback. It looks like Times Roman, but it might be Garamond. The important thing is that it looks the same as a trad published book. If people notice the font, it is wrong.

#WritersCoffeeClub Sept 21: Have you practised your autograph and your selfie pose for your best seller?

No. I changed my profile picture, that's it. A friend on Facebook said, "Wow! You look ten years younger!" That's because it was taken ten years ago.

Chriscutler,
@Chriscutler@creativewriting.social avatar

#WritersCoffeeClub 22: would you consider collaborating on a book?

Not the current series. Graphic novels are the obvious candidate as my drawing skills are zero. Even then, the characters in my head would not match their portraits. Maybe a work of nonfiction.

#WritersCoffeeClub Sep 23 - Do you read your drafts aloud? How does it help?

I use Scrivener readback when I finish a scene. It is also useful to orientate myself after a break. I find it helps me spot overused words and get the continuity right.

9.1 — Shameless Self Promotion.

I write it all. From a lot of original works, to long ongoing RP stories, to deep and insightful fanfiction that my friends thankfully love. I have Doctor Who stories published as well. I have a following on Archive of Our Own. My best friends (who I met elsewhere) are @strangeseawolf, @QuokkaMocha, @doctorwanderer, and @DoctorMonkey2. I have a paranormal podcast too! floofpaldi,

9.20 — What typefaces do you use for paperbacks or for drafting/digital?

I love fonts. I don't have anything published yet, though, so I can't answer this to the full extent. But as I'm drafting, I tend to use Arial. It's easier on my eyes as I'm in the process of writing. I'm sure a lot of people tend to use fonts that are easier for them to see as they're writing, or whichever ones they might prefer. Over the years, I've found that writers tend to be creatures of habit.

floofpaldi,

9.21 — Have you practised your autograph and your selfie pose for your best seller?

Nope.

Yesterday and today have both been questions that aren't meant for me. I'm not published yet and won't be a while.

I hate taking photos. On another note, my full name is actually Corey Iwasczyszyn-Fedorko. Can you imagine that as a signature? No thank you. I laughed. 😂

floofpaldi,

9.22 — Would you ever consider collaborating on a book?

I've thought about this over the years. My best friend, Anna, and I have talked about it. My girlfriend, @aperfectsong, and I have spoken about it quite a bit as well.

One day.

It would be an interesting undertaking and I would really enjoy working on a project with someone.

I write RP stories. You're writing WITH someone. That's a collaboration as well, and I genuinely enjoy the work. I'll always write my RP stories.

#writerscoffeeclub 19 - Do you suffer from imposter syndrome?

No. If anything it's the opposite. Builds confidence and strength.

I enjoy using mental manipulation techniques to solve problems. These tools are the same as I walk through life.

Write what you know. I did. Psychological warfare. I feel nothing but positive affirmation after drawing upon the skills and truth I have accumulated in life. It's refreshing.

#writerscoffeeclub 20 - What fonts do you use for paperbacks or drafting/digital?

I enjoy draft writing with fonts based on what makes me comfortable. Depending on project, I change the background color. That just helps me quickly refocus on the mental stream faster.

For any kind of publication, I'd comply with normal expectations. Standards exist for a reason. It helps people quickly absorb information. Adding confusing twists to that only slows down consumption. Yet sometimes that is good.
