#WordWeavers 01: Introduce your antagonist with as much sympathy as possible.

'Does Richard hate me because I shot him?' Cathy asked.
Eimear smiled. 'It goes back much further than your previous life. His parents were religious fanatics.'
'I thought he was an orphan?'
'I'm talking about the thirteenth century. They were Cathars.'
'We've known him all that time?'
'I'm afraid so. His parents were so preoccupied with the survival of their faith that they neglected him. He turned against us.'

For #WordWeavers tomorrow, I think I'm going to be working on a new #cyberpunk story. The MC is an original character that I've been writing for a very long time and in so many different stories. I used to RP him with friends, and still avidly do in a number of fantastic stories, but I decided to finally start a long novel with him. He originated from #CyberpunkRED and #Cyberpunk2020, tabletop RPG's / #TTRPG's. I've written him over every imaginable medium.

Here he is: https://thecyberdealer.carrd.co/

I need to find the #WritersCoffeeClub and/or #WordWeavers questions, but everyone else seems to be answering a question about writing plans for the year.

So,.

  1. finish or abandon all of my unfinished short stories and move forward.

  2. polish my stories related to a particular theme and make a new collection/chapbook out of them.

  3. Attend and volunteer at WorldCon in Glasgow 🚀 :cone:

  4. make myself finish the first draft of The Trovador, even if it's bad.

01/10. Introduce your MC from the perspective of the antagonist.

AI:"Commander Kira Joan Knox, age 35 Earth/Terran Standart Years, 178 cm, 95 KG in 1GAP, currently inactive, released from Duty on Uniondate 335.9-01/10-3202. This file is redacted and manipulated. I am sure she commands one of the Alliances Navy Special Test/Prototypes like N.64-3.V.4_Unit-O1. I know about her. Our path crossed several times before, she will join our mission soon enough again."

#WordWeavers 17: Covers? 1/?

Absolutely. Not as much during the writing as in the planning phase. My notebooks are riddled with little (1 & 1/2 - 2 inch) thumbnail sketches for potential covers, and almost all of them have popped in while detailing a big, important beat.

My initial plan was to do really simple iconography, but then I had the idea of doing pulpy covers, and initially leaned into that idea pretty hard.

The concept below (for Among the Dirt and Bones) went pretty far:

A more involved, uncolored digital sketch. In the background, taking up most of the left-hand side is a man with a beard, wearing a necktie and a trench coat. On the right-hand side is a woman, wearing a bandanna (as a hair band). In the foreground, center-bottom, there is a demonic version of the aforementioned man, with what looks like smoke or fire coming out of his mouth. He is strangling a woman. Center-top, the words "a HARPER mystery AMONG THE DIRT AND BONES Dan Burley" are drawn out in a logo with blocky lettering. The "O" in "BONES" is an all-seeing eye.
An even more involved, colored digital sketch with early FX. In the background, taking up most of the left-hand side is a man with a beard, wearing a red necktie and a trench coat. He is smoking a cigarette and facing toward the right-hand side. On the right-hand side is a woman, wearing a bandanna (as a cap), glasses, a deep purple button-up sweater, and a lilac-colored shirt. In the foreground, center-bottom, there is a demonic version of the aforementioned man, with white light spewing from his mouth. He is strangling a woman made of pink light with blue shadows (she and her FX are unfinished). There is orange and blue smoke in a lot of the negative space.
A fully-colored and completed digital illustration/book cover. TEXT READING: a HARPER mystery AMONG THE DIRT AND BONES Dan Burley The words are made into a logo with blocky font. The words "a HARPER mystery" and "Dan Burley" are white. The words "AMONG THE DIRT AND BONES" are a golden yellow with black outlines. (which themselves have a thin white boarder). The "O" in "BONES" is an all-seeing eye set in a green circle. The background is black, with a red splatter. Off-center, left: The same all seeing eye as the logo, but white and green instead of black and green. Center and off-center, right: The same illustrations of the man and woman from the previous sketch, however, the woman is now in the center, facing the left-hand side, while the man is slightly above and to the right, facing right. Center-bottom: A small, white house icon. Bottom-left: A white ring with the number 2 in it (and the faint watermark of the same all-seeing eye in white). This was the original release cover, before going back to the idea of simplified iconography.

I need help, dear #writingcommunity, fellow followers of #writerscoffeeclub, #wordweavers, #TimeTravelAuthors, #pennedpossibilities.
It's been some time since I was a teenager. Things have changed. I need a place for my kids in #JulesNVera to hang out in a small town. I chose this place to be a mall. I haven't specified the country in which my story takes place for numerous reasons, but is this still something kids do these days? Or is it completely out of date?

Or maybe it's because I'm even worse at asking for advice. I just don't want to bother anyone.

To keep chipping away at my cool, secret project, but also to finish and release my next book—hopefully by fall. I'm definitely on track for it right now, and I can't wait to get the ball rolling for real!

#WordWeavers Oct 1 Introduce MC from antagonist's POV.

I had heard about her, of course. Her recruiter gave me a report, and he mentioned the trophies on her wall, so clearly had been using her power to win—some do and some do not—but I did not understand until I saw her move. She is a natural. She can do anything physical, any sport, any fighting style. But she lacked intentionality. It was just movement for her, so I knew I needed to make her desire to hurt her opponent. This is necessary.

#WordWeavers Oct 1:
(abridged in alt-text)

Going "Epsilon Project" again (for other WIP, see my profile). As it is a #WebSerial tale built on the fly, the antagonist is as yet unknown (if there even is one).

However, Part One had Angel wrap up a prior case. That antagonist saw her as a nutty animal lover (absolutely), an annoying busybody (not wrong), who was not very bright (hugely incorrect) and overly gun happy (depends on Angel's mood).

#WordWeavers Sep 2: What could you change about your world to make it better for most people?

Racism and sexism. The world has advanced a lot in terms of declawing capitalism, which creates a huge updraft for women, poc, indigenous people, queer/trans people, etc. Economics are the tool of oppression, after all, but white supremacy and patriarchy are still implicit in all kinds of systems of power, not to mention individual prejudice.
